MULTICULTURAL MONTH

After previously celebrating Multicultural Round, the SANFL has adjusted its approach

in 2016 to allow all clubs to host a Multicultural themed home game.

SANFL Diversity Programs Manager Andrew Ainger said clubs had previously missed out on acknowledging Multicultural Round if they were the away team.

Given the expanding involvement in Australian Football of people from a variety of countries, Ainger said it was vital to not only welcome new immigrants to our game but also retain those already participating by making it an enjoyable environment.

Throughout June, SANFL clubs will also be active in their local ethnic communities while an array of different ethnic food will be served at several of the IGA League matches.

Goal Umpires will also be waving orange flags – orange being the colour of harmony – for the four- week period.

South Adelaide – with a host of multicultural players on its list - is one of the clubs set to embrace Multicultural Month with a focus on this Saturday’s clash with North Adelaide at Hickinbotham Oval.

At Noarlunga, the Panthers will have stalls set up featuring different cultural groups while there will also be a multicultural parade before the game.

While the much-improved Emmanuel Irra (Uganda) is sidelined by a foot injury, the Panthers still have Adam Gulden (Turkey), Pan Kokkinakis (Greece) and Ben Darrou (Morocco) running around in senior ranks.

And Irra’s younger brother Robert – selected in this year’s McDonald’s SA

Under-16 squad – is fast rising through the junior grades at South Adelaide.

West Adelaide – with Sudan’s Majok Chol improving in the Reserves this year – will offer Greek-style desserts at Saturday’s clash with Central at City Mazda Stadium.

There will also be the opportunity for those attending both Round 10 multicultural matches to learn the basics of speaking different languages.

Other players in the SANFL from ethnic backgrounds include the Rakiwasa brothers of Fijian descent - Aseri (Eagles) and Aisea (Glenelg) – Croatian-born Sturt utility Josip Habljak and Based Baqeri (Eagles), who could be the first Muslim to play a SANFL League match as he continues his development in the Reserves.

The SANFL has ramped up its celebration of diverse ethnic backgrounds by declaring June as Multicultural Month.

VERSATILE VEIDE GIVING HIS ALL FOR PANTHERS’ CAUSE By Steve Barrett

Some footballers are anointed champions-in-the-making from the time they’re barely bigger than a

Sherrin, breezing effortlessly through the juniors, representing their State in every age bracket en route to their inevitable League debut.

Others, like tenacious South Adelaide tagger Jake Veide, undertake a vastly different journey.

Veide didn’t even touch a footy until his mid-teens and was subsequently overlooked for all junior State squads.

He arrived at the Panthers as a late-blooming teenager with hopes of forging a SANFL career before quitting soon after.

“I didn’t play footy at all until I was 15 when a mate got me out to have a kick,” said Veide, whose father Bernard is a dual Mail Medallist in the GSFL.

“Before that I’d always played soccer.“I couldn’t get a gig in the Under-17s

(at South) and ended up back out at my local club, Port Noarlunga.”

Veide returned to Noarlunga and cracked a League debut against Central District in 2009 but endured a chequered few years, swapping between key defensive posts against bigger opponents and the wing, suffering frustrating injuries and

regularly switching between the seniors and the seconds.

“I made my debut playing on a wing against Paul Thomas,” recalled Veide, who works as a roof tiler.

“It was the toughest two hours of footy I’ve ever experienced.

“For quite a while after that, my footy was all over the shop.”

Then at the start of 2014 Veide’s fortunes changed, blossoming under new coach Brad Gotch as a specialist tagger.

Veide emerged as a cult figure with his belligerent, selfless approach, completely shaven dome, vascular arms and penchant for hitting the scoreboard.

“I do enjoy sneaking forward and kicking a goal,” said Veide, who also plays some cricket for Port Noarlunga, as an all-rounder and ‘specialist fielder’.

“I back myself with set shots much more than my field kicking.

“I’ve been used as a tagger the previous two years and I pride my game on running and endurance.

“My first tag, Travis Tuck, was my toughest opponent and Matt Crouch is difficult as well - he finds plenty of the footy.

“It’s fair to say I stretch the rules a bit -

a few cheeky guernsey holds when the umpires aren’t watching.

“Other teams don’t like me much. Sturt went after me (physically) a few times in the 2014 Semi-Final to protect Zane Kirkwood, who I always go to (tag).

“I used to be quite superstitious and at the start of 2014 I decided to shave my head, which coincided with me playing half-decent footy so I kept it shaved but I’ve grown it back now.”

Another Veide trademark is his ridiculously high jumper number (62).

“When I came to the club, they must have thought I was the 62nd-best player, so that was the number they gave me,” he said.

“I’ve been offered lower numbers since but I don’t reckon I’ll ever change it.”

Veide has enjoyed more offensive freedom on the wing this season as South has responded spectacularly to the disappointment of missing last year’s major round after reaching the Preliminary Final in 2014.

“Our group has stuck together the past 6-7 years and we’re maturing all the time,” Veide said.

“Brad’s a genius who lives and breathes footy. He won’t let us be satisfied yet.

“We’re not too far away.”
