SUPPORTING UNC GYMNASTICSThe University

of North Carolina is proud of its long-standing relationship with Nike, Inc. The two parties signed a new 10-year contract in May 2009 for Nike to continue as the exclusive supplier of athletic footwear, apparel and accessory products. Nike will provide the ath-letic department with shoes, uniforms, coaching gear, balls and other equipment. Nike also gave the University $2 million for the Chancellor’s Aca-demic Enhancement Fund to support faculty. This partnership has benefitted all 28 varsity sports and provided millions of dollars for academics and student scholarships at the University.

EAST ATLANTIC GYMNASTICS LEAGUEThe East Atlantic Gymnastics League became

a reality on July 31, 1995, when eight prominent universities banded together to form a consor-tium created solely for the purpose of showcasing women’s gymnastics on the East Coast. The EAGL is currently compromised of George Washington, New Hampshire, North Carolina, NC State, Mary-land, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Towson. In August 1996, the NCAA Council accepted the EAGL as an official affiliated member of the NCAA.

Carmichael ArenaThe North Carolina faithful long have referred to Carmichael Arena as Blue Heaven and the name certainly fits. Located among the

tall pine trees at the heart of the North Carolina campus, Carmichael has been home to the gymnastics program since it reached NCAA status in 1982. Carolina recently completed a multi-million dollar facelift of Carmichael Arena, which has made it one of the top Olympic sports gymnasiums in the country.

The arena is named for the late William D. Carmichael Jr., a highly popular figure on campus who served as the university’s comptrol-ler, then as its vice-president. Prior to the 1976-77 season, 1,200 seats were added to bring historic Carmichael to its present capacity of 8,010.

The gymnastics office is housed in Carmichael, steps from the competition floor. The facility also serves as home to the women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as housing offices for many other coaches in UNC’s highly-successful Olympic Sports programs. The Carolina men’s basketball program called Carmichael home from 1965 until its move to the Dean E. Smith Center midway through the 1985-86 season. Under coach Dean Smith, the Tar Heels compiled a home record of 169-20 at Carmichael.

Carmichael Arena recently underwent a multi-million dollar

renovation.

The 2013 North Carolina women’s gymnastics team returns nine letter-winners and welcomes three freshmen as the Tar Heels look to return to the top of the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL). Carolina has won the EAGL five times and this year will host the league championship in March.

Carolina graduated five talented performers from last season’s team that accounted for nearly half of the team’s competition lineup (11 of 24). However, the Tar Heels have been working diligently to prepare for the 2013 season and will lean heavily on a senior class that includes All-EAGL performer Elizabeth Durkac and beam standout Maura Masatsugu.

“We have four regular season meets and then the EAGL Championships,” says head coach Derek Galvin, who is set to begin his 32nd season at Carolina. “I’m excited about that because we want people on campus and in the community to be more aware of our gymnastics team. We want more opportunities to compete in front of our home crowd because that creates a greater excitement and enthusiasm for our gymnasts. We were among the top 12 teams in the nation based on attendance last year and we want to continue to grow that each year.”

A new addition to the team is assistant coach and choreographer Amy Smith who comes to UNC from UCLA where she performed as a student-athlete and later served as an assistant coach. Smith also has worked to develop her coaching skills with gymnastics programs at Florida and Mis-souri.

“Amy has done a fantastic job of developing the routines and developing the skills of the gymnasts,” says Galvin. “She’s our primary coach on bal-ance beam and floor exercise. She’s done all the choreography for the team and a majority of the music. She’s brought in some creative things that have made the preseason even more fun and exciting.

“I think Amy is going to have a big impact, not only on the way the team looks when we compete, but also in their confidence. Having a choreogra-pher here all the time is something we have never had the luxury of having in the past. She is able to make adjustments on a daily basis on their floor routines or their beam routines. That’s going to lead to stronger perfor-mances throughout the course of the season.”

Zoya Johnson, a senior last year and an All-EAGL performer, also joined the coaching staff as a student assistant coach. Galvin is thrilled to have her providing guidance on the uneven bars and vault.

With just 12 gymnasts on the 2013 roster, staying healthy is one of Caro-lina’s top priorities. The team has experienced its share of recent hardships with both Meredith Magjuka and Michelle Ikoma redshirting during their careers with a back injury and a torn Achilles, respectively. Last year, Kris-tin Aloi suffered an ankle injury in the final meet of the season and is still recovering.

“We don’t have as much depth on a couple of events as we would like to have,” says Galvin. “We have one of the smallest teams, in terms of total numbers, than we’ve had in many years, so we don’t have a lot of room for illness or injury. One of our top priorities this year is going to be keeping the team healthy throughout the full course of the season.”

If the team can stay injury-free, it will be in solid position to compete for the EAGL trophy. However, the goals do not stop there. The Tar Heels are striving to be outright regular season champions and qualify for the NCAA regional and national championships.

Durkac and Masatsugu will serve as senior co-captains this year and Gal-vin has already seen their guidance pay off.

“The leadership within the team is very effective right now,” he says. “Elizabeth and Maura have both been very engaged in the process of every-thing we’ve done this semester. They’ve been a good voice from the team to the coaching staff, and they’ve also served as a voice from the coaching staff to the team. That’s worked effectively.”

Durkac returns to the team after a breakout season. She is the only gymnast in UNC’s program history to record a 39.00 or better in the all-around competition at eight consecu-tive meets. Galvin fully expects her to assume her role as an all-around competitor in the Tar Heels’ lineup again this year.

“We’ve had some very strong gym-nasts here in the past,” says Galvin, “but Elizabeth is the only one who has topped 39.00 in so many consecutive meets. She’s a very talented gymnast and an extremely hard-working gym-nast. She will be one our of top com-petitors on each of the four events.”

Masatsugu also will be a valuable asset in multiple events this season. Her dance work in her floor routine

has placed her in a viable position to join the lineup, as long as her ankle continues to improve. Her primary strength is on the balance beam, but she has also been working to improve her skill level on the uneven bars. She will provide depth in those events.

The junior class is the largest, with five returning gymnasts, including two redshirts, Magjuka and Ikoma. Magjuka has been impressive on the balance beam and floor exercise, and she has shown steady progress on vaulting. She has been one of the most consistent gymnasts on beam in the preseason. Ikoma will be a top competitor on both the floor exercise and vault.

“Last season, Meredith provided depth for us on floor exercise and bal-ance beam,” says Galvin. “This year she looks even stronger in those two events. She has also shown improvement on vault over last year, so Mer-edith could potentially be competing on three events for us. Michelle’s new floor exercise routine is full of energy and personality, and her vaulting is stronger this year too.”

Emily Cornwell was a mainstay in the uneven bars lineup last season and will likely continue that role in 2013. She has responded well to Smith’s coaching on balance beam and Galvin places her in the top eight on the ap-paratus.

Acacia Cosentino is also a strong competitor on the uneven bars as well as on floor exercise. She will be in the lineup on both bars and floor exer-cise this year. As her skills continue to develop on balance beam and vault-ing she will be in contention to compete on those events too.

Aloi, recently approved to start tumbling after her foot injury last season, hopes to rejoin the floor lineup. As one of the top competitors in that event a season ago, the team is intent on getting her back to 100 percent. Aloi spent most of her recovery time training on the uneven bars, as that event places the least amount of stress on her injured foot. With the extra practice, her skills have improved significantly.

In the sophomore class, Galvin likes the improvements he has seen in Haley Watts and Janell Sargent. Watts had her best meet of the season at the 2012 NCAA regionals, and is expected to continue that success this year. She will likely compete on floor, beam and vault, and she is showing strong potential to move into the bar line-up. Sargent competed on the balance beam last year, and she is expected to compete on that event again this year. She may also contribute to the floor lineup. Her tumbling has grown stron-ger and the dance and performance quality of her routine is beautiful.

“Haley has made some progress on the other events during the preseason and there’s a strong chance she will be competing as an all-arounder,” says Galvin. “Janell had a great preseason. Balance beam is where she competed for us last year. She’s looked good on beam. She’s also been working very hard on floor exercise and uneven bars. I think Janell is, again, going to be someone who gives us depth on floor exercise.”

Galvin has high hopes for each of the incoming freshman. Lexi Cap-palli, Sarah Peterson and Josselyn Mackey have made a seamless transition into training for collegiate gymnastics, and though the gymnasts have yet to compete in an actual meet, they have performed well in the intra-squad

meets held every Friday of preseason training.“They each have different areas where they are stron-

gest, where they shine,” says Galvin. “Josselyn has the potential to compete for us on all four events. Actually all three of them do. They are going to give us depth on every event. Lexi has a very energetic style in her routine on floor exercise. She’s a great performer. She really has the kind of performance quality that draws the audience into the routine. On balance beam, Josselyn is very strong. Of the three freshmen she’s probably the most consistent on that event right now. On uneven bars, all three are capable of making the lineup, and the same holds true on vaulting.”

SCHEDULE: Carolina will have the home crowd advantage in five meets this season. The team will open at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational at George Washington University, but quickly return the favor as the Tar Heels host both George Washington and William and Mary on Jan 20. Carolina and Maryland face each other in a home-and-home series in consecutive weeks on Jan. 26 (College Park) and Feb. 2 (Chapel Hill). After road trips to Washington, D.C., and NC State, the Tar Heels play host to the Wolfpack on Feb. 22. Carolina travels to Pittsburgh and nationally-ranked Oklahoma in the first two weeks of March before concluding the regular sea-son by hosting Pennsylvania on Senior Day on March 16.

Finally, Carolina wraps up the 2013 season by hosting the EAGL Cham-pionship on March 23. It is the first time UNC has hosted the league cham-pionship since 2001.

EVENT BY EVENT PREVIEWVAULT: Last year’s senior class included three of the strongest vault-

ers in UNC’s history. This season, the focus will be on balanced scoring throughout the lineup. In the preseason there was no single individual who stood out from the group. Therefore, the team will have to work together to eliminate deductions in the execution of their vaults. Durkac, Ikoma and Watts return with the most college experience on the event. Magjuka, Cosentino, and the freshman class of Cappalli, Peterson, and Mackey will be completing the line-up.

“Vault is the event where we really needed to get stronger than where we were at the beginning of pre-season training,” says Galvin. “The training has been going well, but we still have progress to make in order to be ready to compete with the top teams.”

UNEVEN BARS: Much like vault, the Tar Heels graduated a very talented group in this event, but Galvin and the gymnasts are excited about the oppor-tunity that creates in the lineup. Durkac, Cornwell and Cosentino are expected to be in the lineup. Masatsugu, Watts and Sargent, along with the freshman class, will all be vying for a place in the bars line-up. Galvin ex-pects great intra-squad competition in this event along with vault.

“If I were an athlete on the team, I’d be excited about training those two events (uneven bars/vault) be-cause there are more openings for making the lineup” said Galvin. “And I think that’s the attitude the team is taking. With continued efforts and focus in training, we’ll get stronger on those two events as the season progresses and we get more experience competing those events.”

BALANCE BEAM: Morgan Evans and Krista Jasper were consistent top performers on this event last season, and Galvin must replace those two outstanding performers. Masatsugu, Durkac, Magjuka, Sargent and Watts have performed solidly in the preseason. Fresh-man Mackey has also excelled on this event. Depth will be provided by Cornwell, Cosentino, and fresh-men Cappalli and Peterson.

“I’m excited about the depth I see on that event,” says Galvin. “We graduated some very consistent performers, but I feel that on this event we have some

people who can step up and close that gap.”FLOOR EXERCISE: With the addition of Smith to the coaching staff

and the new choreography she brings, the Tar Heels will have a new look this year. Veterans Durkac, Ikoma, Cosentino, Watts and Magjuka will likely contribute to the lineup. Aloi returns as one of the top performers on floor exercise from last season with hopes of overcoming a foot injury sus-tained late last year. Cornwell, Sargent and the dynamic freshman class have all shown potential for the floor line-up. Galvin is excited to see the crowd reaction to the new choreography and music the Tar Heels will display this year.

“With the new choreography and new music, I think floor is going to be a lot of fun,” says Galvin. We’ve got so many different styles. Amy has been very effective at tapping into the personalities of each of the gymnasts and developing the choreography for their routines. It’s going to be fun to see them compete those routines and I’m really eager to see the response from spectators, from our alums, from people who have seen our gymnasts per-form in previous seasons.”

VAULTA successful vault begins with a strong, accelerated run. The best vaulters ex-plode off the board with tre-mendous quickness during the preflight phase of the vault. When the gymnast pushes off the vault table, the judges are looking for proper body position and an instantaneous repulsion. Watch for the height and distance traveled, as well as the number of flips and twists. Gymnasts strive to “stick” their landings by tak-ing no extra steps.

UNEVEN BARSThe most spectacular of the women’s events, the uneven bars demand strength, as well as concentration, cour-age, coordination and split-second timing. Watch for the big swings that begin in handstands on the high bar, incorporating multiple hand changes, pirouettes and release elements. The entire routine should flow from one skill to the next without pauses, extra swings or additional supports. Watch for the high flying dismount where the gymnast will at-tempt to stick her landing.

BALANCE BEAMThe beam is only four inches wide and considered the most difficult event by many gymnasts. The gymnast must use acrobatic, tum-bling and dance movements in her routine. Watch for acrobatic series consisting of two or more elements per-formed in a row. The overall execution should give the impression that the gymnast is performing on the floor, not on a beam. Watch for variations in rhythm, changes in level, and the harmonious blend of dance and acrobatic elements.

FLOOR EXERCISEUsually a favorite event for the fans, the floor routine must be choreographed to music and cover the entire floor area. The gymnast must use a variety of dance and tumbling elements which reflects her personal-ity. Most gymnasts at the in-ternational level will do four tumbling passes, changing both the direction and level of movement throughout the routine. Watch for pow-erful, yet graceful, routines that are fun and exciting.

Derek GalvinHead Coach • 32nd Yearn 2010 EAGL Coach of the Yearn 2005 EAGL Coach of the Yearn 2004 NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Yearn 2004 EAGL Coach of the Yearn 2003 NCAA Southeast Region Co-Coach of the Yearn 2002 NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Yearn 2002 EAGL Coach of the Yearn 2000 EAGL Coach of the Year

Only the third gymnastics coach in North Carolina history, Derek Galvin enters his 32nd year in Chapel Hill. Galvin, who has been at the helm of the program since it became an NCAA sport in 1982, has an overall record of 367-207-1. His programs combine the best of athletic and academic achievement every season.

Over the last 11 years, Galvin’s Carolina program has experienced an explosion of success. The Tar Heels have won five East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) titles since 2002, including back-to-back championships in 2010 and 2011. The Tar Heels also won league titles in 2002, 2005 and 2006.

Carolina has advanced to 11 consecutive NCAA regional appearances, which is the longest streak in school history and has come tantalizingly close to competing in the national championships. The Tar Heels have come within one place of ad-vancing from regionals to nationals on several occasions. Most notably, Carolina came within a whisker of making the NCAA finals in 2004, placing third at the Southeast Regional, just .025 points behind the second place team. The previous year, the Tar Heels missed the necessary second-place spot by .05 points.

Galvin’s successes have been recognized with five EAGL coach of the year hon-ors and three Southeast regional coach of the year awards. Most recently, he was the 2010 EAGL Coach of the Year after leading the Tar Heels to a come-from-behind victory at the championship meet.

In the last 27 years, gymnasts coached by Galvin have been chosen for the Na-tional Association of College Gymnastics Coaches’ Scholastic All-America Gym-nastics Team 136 times. Two of Galvin’s former gymnasts – Natalie Halbach and Stacey Kaplan – have been honored as a GTE Academic All-Americas. Halbach, a 2003 graduate, was the first female student-athlete in the Atlantic Coast Confer-ence to receive the Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, the most prestigious academic award given by the NCAA. Nine Tar Heels – Kristin Aloi, Emily Corn-well, Acacia Consentino, Elizabeth Durkac, Michelle Ikoma, Krista Jasper, Elizabeth Lindley, Meredith Magjuka and Janell Sargent – were named to the 2012 NACGC/W national academic team.

Tar Heel gymnasts have had their share of success in the arena as well. Courtney Bumpers, a 2006 gradu-ate, achieved the ultimate individual honor in 2005 - winning floor exercise at the NCAA champion-ships with a perfect score of 10.0. It was the second straight floor exercise national crown for Bumpers, who also earned All-America honors in 2003 with a fourth place finish on balance beam. Christine Robella earned All-America honors in 2006 on floor exercise. It was her first All-America honor and the fourth in Carolina history. Several gymnasts have won individual league honors in Galvin’s tenure. Christine Nguyen was a three-time Gymnast of the Year honoree from 2008-10. Kara Wright, one of Carolina’s top 10 all-around performers, was the 2010 EAGL Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Most recently, Morgan Evans represented Carolina at the NCAA championships as an individual. Zoya Johnson won her second individual EAGL vault title in 2012 and has now joined the staff as a student assistant. Elizabeth Durkac, one of two seniors this year, scored 39.00 or more in eight consecutive meets last year and is expected to have a standout season in 2013.

Galvin has a long history of success at Carolina. In his first year as head coach in 1982, he guided the Tar Heels to a fourth place finish at the Southeast Regional. His 1985 and 1986 teams both finished third at the meet after placing first in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

In addition to UNC’s accomplishments as a team, Carolina has been represented every year at NCAA regionals by at least one individual gymnast. In 2003, Bumpers and junior Anna Wilson were the first Carolina gymnasts since 1986 to qualify for the NCAA national championships as individuals. Bumpers recorded the then-highest finish ever of any ACC or EAGL gymnast with her fourth place finish on the balance beam in the final round before achieving her championship status in the next two years on floor exercise.

In 2004, the Tar Heels had arguably the best year in school history. Galvin was named the NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the third straight season after directing the team to a 22-1 record and a second place finish in the EAGL Championships. The Tar Heels earned a regional appearance and the .955 winning percentage was the highest in school history. It was a record-breaking year in team and individual results with the Tar Heels setting school records on every event except balance beam and scoring above a 197.0 in four meets. Bum-pers, who earned the program’s third-ever 10.0 in 2003, turned in seven perfect scores on floor exercise and surpassed her previous school record on the vault and in the all-around competition. She has the school’s highest all-around total with a 39.725 and the highest vault score with a 9.975. Olivia Trusty set a record on uneven bars with a score of 9.95.

Galvin was named the EAGL Coach of the Year for the fourth time in 2005, lead-ing his team to a regular season record of 14-4-1 and the conference champion-ship. Carolina finished the year ranked 23rd in the country and tied for third place at regionals. A year later, the Tar Heels repeated as EAGL champions.

Galvin has been involved in gymnastics in various capacities throughout his life. He was a member of the Carolina men’s team before the discontinuation of the program in 1974. Staying involved in the sport, he spent four years coaching at Gymdancetics, a training center established by Fred Sanders, former coach of the Carolina men’s team. Under Galvin’s guidance, team members dominated state competition and advanced to the United States Gymnastics Federation champion-ships.

In 1978, he became director and head coach of the Triad Gymnastics Academy. The following year he accepted an administrative position with the research and consulting firm of Syllogistics, Inc., but remained active in area gymnastics. His first season as head coach of the Tar Heels was in 1982.

Galvin has made contributions to many other areas of the gymnastics community. In 1982, he was named to the NCAA Southeast Region Advisory Committee and served as committee chairman for several years, including the 2005 season. He was the gymnastics site coordinator for the 1987 United States Olympic Festival in Chapel Hill. He is an active member of the NACGC and has served as a clinician of sev-eral USAG and NCAA Y.E.S. clinics.

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Galvin moved to Arlington, Va., with his family when he was 10 years old. He competed on two state champi-onship gymnastics teams under coach Jesse Meeks at Yorktown High School and graduated from Carolina with a psychology degree in 1976. Galvin and his wife, Debra, have two children. Both graduated from college in May 2003 - their son, Derek Sean, from UNC and their daughter, Ryan, from the University of Virginia. Galvin has three grandchildren - Lily (3), Annie Wise (1) and Maggie (eight months).

Annual FundThe Rams Club has over 16,000 members who contribute to the

Annual Fund. Your annual donation as a member of The Rams

Club is vital to helping to cover the immediate funding needs of

Carolina Athletics, particularly the cost of providing 450 scholar-

ships annually.

Carolina ForeverCarolina Forever provides an opportunity for donors to leave

a lasting legacy and ensure the future of Carolina Athletics.

Giving to this program will allow the member substantial tax

benefits while also giving generous support to Carolina’s ath-

letic programs.

Scholarship EndowmentGiving to the Scholarship Endowment fund allows donors to

provide critical, long-term support for Carolina’s athletic

scholarship program. The cost to endow a scholarship is

$500,000, payable over 5 years. Its annual yield helps cover

the 450 scholarships provided by Carolina Athletics.

Sports EndowmentsEach of Carolina’s sports programs has its own endowment

which members can contribute toward in addition to their an-

nual fund donation. Sport endowments are integral to Caroli-

na’s commitment to a broad-based athletic program and allow

each program to meet its specific needs.

Members of The Rams Club provide life changing opportunities for accomplished student-athletes to experience this exceptional

place. They provide the resources for them to excel as competitors, students and leaders. By renewing your membership in The
