Summary There is a significant variation in the ideal thermal

effi ciency and the brake thermal effi ciency of the VOLVO V50 diesel engine.

Brake thermal and indicated thermal effi ciency is 50%(approx.) lesser than the ideal thermal effi ciency.

The prime reason for the above reduction in effi ciency is due to the frictional losses, heat lost to cooling water, heat lost to exhaust and radiation losses.

Some of the waste heat recovering

techniques, increase in CR and better combustion chamber design can be employed to improve the indicated and brake thermal effi ciency of the engine.
