how we can live moresustainably in our environment and we really ‘walk the walk’!

The school has a 68 solar panels  installed which havegenerated over 29,452KWH since their installation. Thisproject lessens our reliance on outside power, reducing both

operational costs and our carbon footprint.

Caralee is also a Wastewise and Waterwise school withstudent-run recycling, composting and worm programs  –  including a small chicken run alongside our successful vegetablepatch that provides bunches of healthy produce weekly. Withthe help of a parent graphic designer, the children are designing

a logo which will be used to market theproduce from the garden. This project is

generously supported by the  WA HealthySchools Project  as well as ongoing income

    from vegetable sales.

How to grow a healthy lunch.

Sustainable living lessons start early atCaralee. Early learning students from B4planted seedlings in their class vegetable gardenlate in second term and then made vegetablesoup with their bountiful Spring harvest in

third term. The children ate the soup as partof their lunch, and while many of the childrenstated that they don’t really like eating ‘vegetables’, their

teacher Mrs Julie Cummings noted that most of the children

did eat the soup, with a few coming back for seconds!

Sustainability is a cross curricularpriority for the Australian Curriculumbeing implemented from 2013 and Caraleeis well placed to meet the demands of thisnational educational directive. All theseongoing projects will help to ensure ourchildren learn how we can reduce andreuse our waste, conserve water, live a

healthy and more sustainable life andwork together to create a better

environment for all into the future.

This year, Caralee Community School hasintroduced iPads  to their ICT mix to enhance

engagement and learning outcomes as well asprepare for the Australian Curriculum ICTCapabilities directive. P&C funds haveprovided each class and the music teacher withan individual iPad to support planning forstudents and provide one on one learningopportunities for each class. By 2013, Caraleewill have three ‘banks’ of iPads to service Junior,

Middle and Senior classes. We will alsocomplete our notebook replacement programwith 40 new HP notebooks  available to all

    students.

     Meet our Digital Natives!

These new technologies have been most fullyembraced by our younger students, who arepractically born with a ‘mouse’ in their hand!

Junior Primary iPad Co-ordinator , Mrs JulieCummings, has selected ‘apps’ across various

learning areas to support and extend what thechildren are learning within their classes. “The

    teachers have embraced this technology

and are integrating the iPads into their classprograms.” she enthuses. Years 1 and 2 students

also use the class bank of laptops to developword processing and research skills. “The

children are becoming confident in their abilityto create and save documents and to research atopic, which are skills central to the AustralianCurriculum’s ICT Syllabus. They also usethe iPads and laptops in Targeted AssistanceMaths & English lessons to further developand consolidate their literacy and numeracy

    skills,” adds Mrs Cummings .

Deputy Principal, Jason Shapcott , has overseenthe introduction and augmentation of thesetechnologies to Caralee, “We are ever mindful

of the contemporary and future workplace andso have been keen to have a mix of Apple and

Microsoft applications available to allstudents,” he explained.

With a new look website featuring Class Blogpages also due to be launched by the end of2012, technology is certainly powering the

    future educational directions at Caralee.
