DESCRIPTION

Carbon Footprint is a measure of organization's Greenhouse Gases emmissions. Many organizations nowadays are conscious with their carbon footprint. This consciousness led to the development of PAS 2050, a standard developed by the British Standards Institute to assess the lifecycle GHG emissions of goods and services.

Page 3: Carbon Footprint

Every Human being adds over 30 Billion Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide, 400 Million Tonnes of Methane to the atmosphere causing adverse climatic conditions.

Page 4: Carbon Footprint

Is there a way to measure GHG Emissions?

Carbon Footprint

YES

Page 5: Carbon Footprint

Total amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions by an organization.

Measure the impact of activities on the environment, in particular climate change.

Relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation etc.

Units - tonnes (or kg) of carbon dioxide.

IS THERE ANY STANDARD FOR CARBON FOOTPRINT?

YES

PAS 2050 – Product Carbon Footprint(British Standard Institute)

Page 11: Carbon Footprint

What is PAS 2050?

• Developed by the British Standards Institute

• Consistent method for assessing the life cycle GHG emissions of goods and services.

• Measurement tool/protocol for companies to make credible reduction commitments and achievements on life cycle GHG emissions of products,

Page 12: Carbon Footprint

PAS 2050 Benefits Companies

• Internal assessment of product life cycle GHG emissions

• Evaluation of alternative product configurations, operational and sourcing options, etc. on the basis of their impact on product GHG emissions

• A benchmark for measuring and communicating emission reductions

• Support for comparison of product GHG emissions using a common, recognized and standardized approach

• Support for corporate responsibility reporting social and economic impacts

Customers

• Confidence that the life cycle GHG emissions being reported for products are based on a standardized, robust method

• Greater understanding of how their purchasing decisions impact GHG emissions

PAS 2050 Reporting Principles

• Select sources, data and methods to assess GHG emissions.Relevance

• Include all GHG emissions.Completeness

• Enable meaningful comparisons in GHG related information.Consistency

• Reduce bias and uncertainty as much as practical.Accuracy

• Disclose enough information allowing third parties to make decisionsTransparency

Encourage ‘ride sharing’ Energy audits for entity premises Organise energy saving campaigns Optimize waste and recycling systems Launch sustainable procurement campaign

Closer monitoring of vehicle fuel usage Air conditioning replacement Power saving initiatives Include hybrids and diesels in fleet

Doubled sided printing mandated Improve monitoring of courier use Improve branch insulation Work with suppliers by understanding what they are doing to

reduce emissions Encourage video conferences

Summary

• Carbon Footprint is a measure of

organization’s / product GHG emissions.

• Most organizations are moving towards

assessing their carbon footprint & taking

measure to neutralize / offset / minimize it.

• PAS 2050 is a standard by BSI to asses

the carbon footprint of products & services.

• Carbon Footprint follows three major

steps:

– Select Product

– Calculate Carbon Footprint

– Report Carbon Footprint
