The Metcar carbon–graphite bushings are used to support both the drive-gear and idler- gear shafts. The company says they are pre- ferred for this application because they can use aviation fuel as the bushing lubricant. Aviation fuel is a low-viscosity liquid that produces only an extremely thin hydrodynamic film – too thin to provide adequate lubrication for tradi- tional metallic bushings. But because Metcar’s material has no atomic attraction to a metallic shaft, the thin fuel-film is sufficient to lubricate shafts running in the carbon–graphite bushings. According to Metallized Carbon, a second major advantage of carbon–graphite bushings is that they are self-lubricating – they can run dry for short periods of time without catastrophic pump failure or significant wear. In addition, these bushings are dimensionally stable, which permits the close bushing-to-shaft running clear- ances that are required in gear-pump applications. Finally, they have a relatively low elastic modulus. Whilst sufficiently elastic to enable them to be press-fitted into the metallic gear- pump housing with no difficulty, after being properly press-fit, they are pre-stressed in compression. Carbon–graphite bushings support aircraft engine fuel-pump shafts

US-based Metallized Carbon Corp has developed carbon–graphite

bushings for use in gear pumps that supply aviation fuel in aircraft engines.

The Metcar carbon–graphite bushings are used to support both the drive-gear and idler-gear shafts. The company says they are pre-ferred for this application because they can use aviation fuel as the bushing lubricant. Aviation fuel is a low-viscosity liquid that produces only an extremely thin hydrodynamic film – too thin to provide adequate lubrication for tradi-

tional metallic bushings. But because Metcar’s material has no atomic attraction to a metallic shaft, the thin fuel-film is sufficient to lubricate shafts running in the carbon–graphite bushings.

Trelleborg acquires 51% stake in pipe-seal company

Trelleborg Ab has acquired a 51% stake in the North American group

Max Seal Inc, which develops and manu-factures polymer-based sealing systems for various types of pipes deployed in water and wastewater systems.

Trelleborg Industrial Solutions signed an agree-ment during February to acquire the business which has its main facility in Tijuana, Mexico and a sales company in the USA. Its net sales in 2013 amounted to around SEK80 million.
