Carburetor icingThe icing phenomenon of

carburetor..

Page 2: Carburetor icing

Carburetor icing, most probably carb icing is a condition that which can effect the carburetor by formation of ice in the throttle part of the carburetor..

It causes a disastrous effect on engine, some times leads to put off.

What actually a carburetor icing means..!!

Page 3: Carburetor icing

When does the carb icing occurs..!!•Mainly, carb icing occurs when there is a content of humidity in the air that was mixed with the fuel. •Due to the presence of moisture, the temperature of the venturi drops drastically and causes the water vapor to freeze.

Page 4: Carburetor icing

How the ice creates in the carburetor..!!According to the Bernoulli's theory, when the air is flowing in a pipe of a body the pressure difference occurs due to the accumulation of steam lines. In actual principle of the carburetor, there consists of three parts like convergent., throttle, and divergent portions.

Page 5: Carburetor icing

In the middle part of the carburetor the air got narrowed.. This narrow leads to accumulation of stream lines. Which further leads to the drop of temperature from 30-40 degrees of Fahrenheit.

Page 6: Carburetor icing

Due to this fall of temperature in the venturi the humid or moisture gets vaporized in the venturi which blocks the air and fuel to flow through it. Due to blocking of fuel the engine gets stopped.

What may be the effects that can cause

due to carburetor icing..!!

This ice that was formed on the surface of carburetor gradually increase the effect of venturi.. Sometimes restricts the air flow, perhaps can cause complete blockage of air.The engine begins to run more rich when ice forms in the carburetor increases.

Page 8: Carburetor icing

Without intervention, this can only continue until the mixture is outside of the chemical correct range for combustion.. It also causes the jamming of mechanical parts of the carburetor like throttle valve and butterfly valve.

Page 9: Carburetor icing

Typically in which type of engines this icing occurs..??It mainly occurs in engines associated with piston- powered aircrafts, especially small, single engine light aircrafts. It also occurs in bikes and cars normally used in low temperature regions.

Prevention measures for carburetor icing..In aircrafts..

All pilots must by now be very familiar with the carb icing prediction chart. It helps to advice the pilot that the carb icing is imminent.

Page 11: Carburetor icing

It can be some how prevented by supplying the engine with carburetor heaters which works on the exhaust gases., which normally heats the gases or air entering the carburetor. However, the overheating of these gases sometimes may knocking or detonation.

By supplying electrical heater..The air also can be preheated by

supplying a electrical heating, yet it is another blind approach.

Page 13: Carburetor icing

By supplying temperature gauges of carburetor..All the pilots flying the aircraft

made essential to know about temperature gauges. These gauges gives the information about the temperature range of the carburetor.

Page 14: Carburetor icing

By providing temperature sensing agents.. By providing temperature sensing

agents, the alarm alarms when the temperature gets low in the engine which indicates to start heating systems or sometimes it automatically starts the heaters..
