Financing your waythrough university…

Going to university is aconsiderable financial investment, but you should remember thatholding a higher qualification such as a degree will improve yourjob prospects, making it easier tofind a fulfilling job and one that iswell paid. During your time atuniversity, you will have two maincosts to meet: tuition fees andyour living costs.

As a full-time undergraduatestudent, you may be eligible for apackage of financial support madeup of:

A loan to cover the cost of yourtuition fees,

A loan to help with your livingcosts and,

Depending on yourcircumstances, various means-tested grants which aren’trepayable.

FAQs

There have been a lot of changesin the way students can financetheir studies in recent years, so wehave put together some answersto the questions you may have …

Q. Do I need the funds to paythe tuition fees up front?

No. The Government will beproviding loans for theduration of your three or fouryear course and this is onlyrepaid once your salaryexceeds £21,000 a year.

Q. Is there more than one typeof Student Loan available?

Yes. You can apply for twotypes of Government loans. The first is a Tuition Fee loanwhich is automatically paid toyour university to cover thecost of your course.

The second is a MaintenanceLoan which is there to helpwith the Cost of Living (suchas accommodation, books,

food and other additionalcosts you may incur).Maintenance loans are paid toyou in three instalmentsduring the academic year tohelp you manage you money.

Q. Does everyone qualify toreceive a Student Loan?

Yes. Student Loans areavailable for all students.Tuition Fees loans are availablefor the full cost of your course,no matter what your personalfinancial situation.

Maintenance Loans differslightly, in that they are meanstested (dependent on yourparents combined householdsalary) and given in conjunctionwith Maintenance Grants (thegrants are non repayablemeaning you will never have topay them back).

For up to date tuition fees please visitwww.cardiffmet.ac.uk/fees

Some courses may also incur additional costs. For further information please visit www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/additionalcosts

Q. When and how are thestudent loans repaid?

You won't be eligible to repaythe loan until you graduateand begin earning £21,000.Monthly repayments are thenbased on 9% of your income. For example if you earn£22,000 you will payapproximately £7.50 a month, rising to £30.00 a month if youearn £25,000. Loanrepayments are taken fromyour ‘net’ pay through theincome tax system. Therefore, like income tax and nationalinsurance, the money neveractually makes it into yourbank, and if your income everfalls below £21,000, you don'tget a job or take a careerbreak, your payments willstop.

Q. When should I apply forthese loans and financialsupport?

If you want to make sure thatyou receive the first instalmentof your loan (and grants!) whenyou start university, you mustapply for your financial supportas soon as you decide to applyto university; don’t wait untilyou are offered a place.Applications must be renewedeach academic year.
