Welcome to Cardinal Newman Catholic School

Firstly let me welcome you to Cardinal Newman Catholic School and thank you for choosing us as your child’s secondary school. We are very proud of our students and our school and hope to work in close partnership with you over the coming years in order to provide an outstanding educational experience for your child. The transfer to a new school, whilst exciting, can sometimes be a traumatic and daunting experience for young people. From experience, most students settle quickly and easily into new routines. Most are more than ready for the change and the challenge ahead and sometimes we as parents, carers and teachers are the ones to worry! The best thing we can do, is to be upbeat and positive, do all we can to support our young people and then watch them fly! We hope this guide will help you answer some of your basic questions and be helpful to you as you support your child throughout the important coming weeks. Please note that as there cannot be an induction day this year, we will do a full induction on the first day for all Year 7 students.

Working Together in Year 7

As parents, successfully bringing up a child is perhaps the most difficult job that most of us do. Working closely with the school is an important part of this daunting task. Year 7 - The Important Foundation Year. Students will need support in settling into their new school and its routine. They will need help in organising their Student Planners and doing their homework to the best of their ability and handing it in on time. Students will begin on their exciting and challenging Key Stage 3 curriculum this year and will work towards becoming more independent learners.

LABEL EVERYTHING!!

One job your child can do to prepare for Cardinal Newman is to help you to label all uniform items and belongings with their name. You would be amazed at the things which turn up in lost property! Name tapes are best for longevity on uniform items, but indelible marker pens can be just as good. It can be worth having spares of some items (school ties spring to mind!) to avoid those early morning panics.

Top Tip – make sure your child has a watch!! Students need to be in correct places at correct times, keeping an eye on the time is very important.

Equipment. Students must take the responsibility and make sure that they have the correct equipment for lessons. Each day students must bring: a black or blue pens, a green pen, pencils, ruler, and a calculator. In September students will be given a Student Planner to help organise and plan homework. They MUST bring this to school every day. Parents are expected to sign the planner weekly.

ready for a prompt start to the first lesson of the day.

There are 5 lessons every day and each lesson is one hour long.

During the school day students also have a break and a lunch.

Attendance & Punctuality

There is a strong link between regular attendance and success at school. We hope that parents will work with us to ensure that their son/daughter attends regularly and on time. n

Absences n If your child is absent through illness and to ensure the whereabouts and safety of our students: Please phone the school to let us know the reason for the absence. j We have an automated phone system which enables parents to leave a message about a child’s absence at any time. 7 If a phone call is not received by 9.30 am on the day of absence, we will contact parents on the first day that a student is absent. The aim is to alert parents as early as possible to students who may be truanting and to keep students safe.

j On return to school a letter signed by the parent is required to confirm the reason for absence and dates involved. We ask that this letter be brought to school on the first day back after illness. u Parents will also be contacted if a student persistently arrives late for school.

Holidays in term time greatly disrupt and affect the learning of students and therefore we ask that this does not happen. Any such absence will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and a fixed penalty notice may be issued. In exceptional circumstances, requests should be made in writing directly to the Headteacher.

Medical/Dental Appointments

Please arrange appointments out of school time where possible. Students should have a letter or appointment card to show to their Tutor. If a student has to leave school during the day for a medical appointment, they should go to Student Reception to sign out.

If a student arrives late to school after a medical appointment, they should go to Student Reception to sign in.

The word ASPIRE was chosen by the school community to represent the values the students of Cardinal Newman want to strive for;

A represents the great need to fully achieve in all aspects of life

S represents the underlying Catholic values that require us to serve

God and each other

P represents that our school is built on justice, where everything and

everyone in God’s creation can reach their God-given potential.

I represents the need to be honest, responsible and a caring member of

our community.

R represents the need to respect our school, themselves and every

one around them.

E represents that we want all students to aim to do their best and be

the best people they can be.

To recognise good work, good behaviour and special achievements, students will receive from teachers positive reward points. Teachers may also issue negative points for disappointing work or inappropriate behaviour. We expect all our students to become self disciplined, mature young people who can take responsibility for their own actions. We expect students to follow our code of conduct and help to make our school a happy and positive place to be.

Code of Conduct

A = Achievement

S = Service

P = Peace

I = Integrity

R = Respect

E = Excellence

Biometric Fingerprint Recognition We currently use a cashless catering system to allow students to purchase

goods from our canteens without the need to carry cash. To do this Student

have a virtual account with the school which can be topped up via the School

Gateway app or via our website. The canteen system uses biometric data

from a finger scan which is stored as a mathematical algorithm. This isn't

stored as a finger print.

Privacy Statement

We actively follow the guidance from the

Department of Education with regard to

protecting biometric information of

Children in Schools. Biometric scans are

kept onsite and are solely used for our

cashless catering system and or other

systems that use the finger scan.

What can you do to help before September?

• Be positive – encourage the excitement and anticipation • Be supportive – acknowledge any anxiety and seek to address concerns • Over the summer spend some time with your child going through all the

materials issued. • Make a list of any questions your child might have. These can be asked on

the transition day. • Any worries or concerns? If you need to speak to the pastoral support team

do not hesitate to phone the school, or email us. • Be positive! • Start buying uniform, bits of equipment and encourage your child to feel

proud and excited. Most children are thrilled at this stage, and will demonstrate this at home even if it doesn’t seem ‘cool’ to admit it to friends!

• Start packing the new school bag ready for the first day. • Buy a box for storing all school books and folders at home . • Decide where homework will be done – somewhere quiet! • Practise the morning routine to see how long it takes to get out of the

house! • Practise the route to school if your child is nervous about walking to school,

or catching the bus for the first time. They may not want to admit this to friends, but a discreet ‘trial run’ can work wonders for their confidence on day one.

Page 14: Cardinal Newman Catholic Schoolfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/Cardinal... · Jackets and coats should not contain any logos, pictures or elaborate decoration

14

What can you do to help at the start of Year 7?

• Have a chat about the day each evening, but don’t panic if your child doesn’t seem to want to go through every detail of the day. Students will be excited, but may well be tired and, as they get older, may want to ‘mull things over’ for themselves before chatting about them.

• Pin the two week timetable and homework timetable up in a prime spot

somewhere around the house. • Go through the two week timetable - get your child to explain it to you,

as this will help them to get to grips with it! • Check through pupil planners at least once a week. Help your child to

organise their time to make sure work deadlines are met. • Help with the unpacking/packing of the bag for the next day. Preparation

and routine is the key to being organised. • Listen to any small worries or problems - help your child to think of a

solution for themselves if they can. If they can’t, remember there is always someone they can talk to.

• Download the Class Charts app to support your child.

We hope that these tips are helpful to you as you

support your child at the start of their secondary

school journey.

During the summer holidays we will be in touch with all parents, carers and students

regarding first day arrangements.

Students should make their way to Cardinal Newman and enter by the main school entrance

gate (signs will be up to direct students). Staff will be present from 8.15am and pupils should

arrive no later than 8.35am. They will be met by our Leadership Team at the main school

entrance and be escorted to the Pope Francis Hall where Miss Keane and their Tutors will be

waiting.

Students should wear full school uniform and their tutor badge which we have sent in the

post with this booklet. Please make sure that students bring their equipment and a bottle of

water.

Throughout the day students will have a welcome assembly, they will meet their Pastoral

team and new members of their year group. Students will spend the morning with their

Tutors and get familiarised with the school site. They will meet some of their teachers in the

afternoon. They will also be given their welcome “goodie” bag. This will include a Cardinal

Newman PE Kit bag, a water bottle, a pencil case, pen, pencil and ruler.

Collection at the end of the day:

The school day will finish at 3.10pm. Please note we encourage all parents not to drive onto

the school site at the end of the day. The site does become very busy and we advise you to

park off site before collecting your child.

At the beginning of the day we will ask students about how they are getting home.

Any student who is making their own way home must have a note or have informed our

Admissions Officer, Mrs Higgins ([email protected])

First DAY Guidance

We hope all students have a fantastic and enjoyable first day.
