The M State Cardiovascular Technology Student Policy Handbook is intended to provide the student information necessary to be successful in the program, and provide guidance when concerns or questions arise. Additional resources include the Cardiovascular Technology faculty, M State College Catalog, M State Student Handbook, Student Development Services, and the course syllabi.

Governing Bodies

Minnesota State Minnesota State system is one of two systems of public higher education in the state of Minnesota (the other is the University of Minnesota). The Minnesota State system has 31 institutions with 54 campuses conveniently located in 47 Minnesota communities that serve more than 430,000 students. The law creating the system was passed by the Minnesota Legislature in 1991 and went into effect July 1, 1995. The law merged the state’s community colleges, technical colleges and state universities into one system.

Minnesota State Community and Technical College As a member of Minnesota State, Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M State) is a public, non-profit community and technical college in four unique communities in west central Minnesota and offers a variety of online programs and courses. M State was created July 1, 2003, with the merger of Fergus Falls Community College and the three campuses of Northwest Technical College. M State was developed to better serve the needs of the communities in west central Minnesota and the Red River Valley through the combination of strong technical programs and comprehensive community college curriculum. The M State Campuses are located in Moorhead, Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls and Wadena.

M State Cardiovascular Technology Program Mission The M State Cardiovascular Technology Program’s mission to prepare competent entry-level cardiovascular technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains for invasive cardiology. Students will learn to assist physicians in diagnosing and testing cardiac, peripheral vascular, neurovascular and electrophysiological conditions using current technology, physiological and diagnostic equipment, and therapeutic procedures.

M State Cardiovascular Technology Program Philosophy The M State Cardiovascular Technology Program is grounded in the biological, psychological and vocational sciences. Program faculty regard cardiovascular technology as a noble profession and embrace core values of caring, integrity, diversity, excellence, ethics, patient-centeredness and holism. We believe graduates of our program will be prepared to practice in complex and ever-changing clinical environments.

The M State Cardiovascular Technology Program faculty support an environment conducive to learning and working while being responsive to the communities served. Our program prepares students to be accountable and skillful, in an educational environment that promotes critical thinking, individual growth, and a holistic view of cardiology and healthcare. Program faculty recognize diverse learning needs, individual strengths, and utilize a variety of teaching strategies to promote learning. Students are expected to be caring, conscientious, flexible, professional, and accountable for their actions. Varied learning opportunities are provided in classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences.

A culture of integrity is promoted by respecting the dignity and moral wholeness of every person without condition or limitation. Cardiovascular Technology Program

Program Description The M State Cardiovascular Technology – Invasive program prepares the graduate to be a competent entry-level cardiovascular technologist in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skill), and affective (behavior) learning domains for invasive cardiovascular technology. Graduates will have the entry-level knowledge to assist physicians with diagnosing and treating cardiac, peripheral vascular, neurovascular and electrophysiological conditions using current technology, physiological and diagnostic equipment, and therapeutic procedures.

Course Descriptions

CVRI1100 Cardiovascular Technology Survey (2 credits)

This course introduces the student to the history and emerging role of a cardiovascular technologist. Students will learn medical terminology and have opportunities to observe the role of the cardiovascular technologist in various settings. Students in this course will incur the cost of and be required to receive clear national and Minnesota Department of Health background checks, make sure all their immunizations are up to date, and take American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR.

CVRI1105 Introduction to Cardiovascular Technology (2 credits)

In this introductory course, students will explore ethical and legal issues related to patient safety, documentation, informed consent, patient identification, and confidentiality. Students will use appropriate medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols. Students will practice professional communication strategies with other health professionals and explore team dynamics.

Prerequisites: Clear Minnesota Department of Health background check AND clear national background check AND current American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR AND successful completion (C or better) of general education prerequisite courses AND BIOL2266 AND BIOL2261 AND MATH1114 AND BIOL2267 AND BIOL2268 AND COMM1130 AND acceptance into the Cardiovascular Technology Program and CVRI1100. Co-requisites: BIOL2262 and BIOL2263

CVRI1110 Cardiovascular Anatomy and Physiology (3 credits)

This course provides the cardiovascular technology student an in-depth review of normal anatomy and physiology of the cardiac, cardiovascular, peripheral vascular and neurovascular systems, and renal regulation of blood pressure. The pathophysiology of these systems is examined in order to understand and apply treatment modalities in the cardiovascular catheterization laboratory.

Co-requisites: CVRI1100, BIOL2262 and BIOL2263

CVRI1120 Principles of Patient Care (4 credits)

This course introduces the cardiovascular technology student to basic patient care principles. Students will learn basic intracardiac catheterization care including patient assessment, interpretation of laboratory values and diagnostic tests.

CVRI1130 Cardiovascular Technology I (3 credits)

This course prepares students to participate in cardiovascular diagnostic and interventional procedures with adult patients. Students will differentiate cardiovascular complications and emergencies, prepare and position patients for various procedures, and set up and maintain sterile fields. Students will learn concepts related to hemodynamics including cardiac output, performance of hemodynamic calculations and recognition of blood flow determinants.

Pre-requisites: BIOL2260, BIOL2261, BIOL2267, BIOL2268, and CVRI1100 Co-requisites:

CVRI1105, CVRI1110 and CVRI1120

CVRI1136 Cardiovascular Technology Clinical (2 credits)

In this course, students will participate as part of the cardiovascular, neurovascular, peripheral vascular and electrophysiology teams during diagnostic and interventional procedures.

Pre-requisites: none

Co-requisites: CVRI1105, CVRI1110, CVRI1120, and CVRI1130

CVRI2130 Cardiovascular Technology II (5 credits)

This course builds on the knowledge and skills gained in Cardiovascular Technology I. Students will learn diagnostic and interventional procedures related to peripheral vascular, neurovascular, congenital and pediatric conditions, and complications and emergencies.

Pre-requisites: CVRI1130 and CVRI1120

CVRI2141 Pharmacology for Cardiovascular Technology (2 credits)

This course develops the student’s awareness of basic pharmacological concepts, drug classifications, indications, and contraindications, therapeutic effects, side effects, and other considerations related to use medications. Students will learn dosage calculations.

Pre-requisites: CVRI1130

Co-requisites: CVRI2130

CVRI2145 Intravenous Therapy (1 credit)

This course provides students with the knowledge and skills used to initiate and maintain an intravenous site. Students will learn basic complications of fluid and electrolyte imbalance and acid/base imbalance, and differentiate intravenous fluids. Students will perform venous access and learn to manage complications. Students will demonstrate initiation and maintenance of fluids and secondary administration techniques, and perform intravenous dosage calculations. Pre-requisites: none

CVRI2250 Radiation Safety (2 credits)

Students in this course will demonstrate safety related to the use of radiation during catheterization procedures. Students will learn to position patients, perform quality assurance, produce images and differentiate between digital and flat screen imaging. Consideration will be given to radiation biology and radiation protection.

Pre-requisites: CVRI1120 and CVRI1130

Co-requisites: CVRI2130, CVRI2141 and CVRI2145

CVRI2262 Cardiovascular Technology Practicum I (5 credits)

In part one of this capstone course, students will apply the knowledge and skills gained throughout the Cardiovascular Technology program. Students will become certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) before being assigned to various cardiovascular catheterization laboratory opportunities. Students will function as a part of the cardiovascular team under the supervision of a preceptor. Students will participate in experiences Monday through Friday for the duration of the academic term. Shifts may rotate between day, evening, night and on-call shifts. Students will incur the cost of ACLS class prior to this course. Also, living expenses if their practicum site is not within a reasonable driving distance each day.

Pre-requisites: Successful completion (C or better) of all the Cardiovascular Technology Program requirements, current American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR, current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification, current and clear Minnesota Department of Health criminal background check, current and clear national background check, and up-to-date immunizations and health form.

CVRI2263 Cardiovascular Technology Practicum II (5 credits)

In part two of this capstone course, students will apply the knowledge and skills gained throughout the Cardiovascular Technology program. Students will function as a part of the cardiovascular team under the supervision of a preceptor. Students will participate in the experiences Monday through Friday for the duration of the academic term. Shifts may rotate between day, evening, night and on-call shifts.

Students will incur the cost of living expenses if their practicum site is not within a reasonable driving distance each day.

CVRI2264 Cardiovascular Technology Practicum III (5 credits)

In part three of this capstone course, students will apply the knowledge and skills gained throughout the Cardiovascular Technology program. Students will function as a part of the cardiovascular team under the supervision of a preceptor. Students will participate in experiences Monday through Friday for the duration of the academic term. Shifts may rotate between day, evening, night and on-call shifts.

Students will incur the cost of living expenses if their practicum site is not within a reasonable driving distance each day. Another possible expense is if they choose to sit for their registry exam before graduation, which will make student exempt from taking equally challenging final exam.

Prerequisites: Successful completion (C or better) of all Cardiovascular Technology Program

requirements, current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), current American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR, current and clear Minnesota Department of Health criminal background check, current and clear national background check, and up-to-date immunizations.

General Program Requirements

Program Eligibility and Acceptance The Cardiovascular Technology program has a selective admission process. Current eligibility requirements are found at www.minnesota.edu/programs/cardiovascular-technology-invasive/. Eligibility does not guarantee acceptance in to the program. Eligible applicants are ranked according to points system. Candidates ranked 1-15 will be accepted into the program.

**The following items must be submitted 2 weeks prior to the start of classes. Students are STRONGLY encouraged to keep a copy of the documentation for their own record.

Health Declaration Form/Immunizations M State Cardiovascular Technology students observe and provide care for a variety of patients in facilities offering clinical opportunities. As part of the contractual agreement with the clinical facilities, M State Cardiovascular Technology clinical partners require documentation of immunizations and health information. The Health Declaration Form, located at www.minnesota.edu/programs/cardiovascular-technology-invasive/, is the form agreed upon by M State and the clinical affiliates and identifies required immunizations.

Students are required to submit supporting documentation and provide dates of current immunization against diseases preventable by vaccine, including influenza. Vaccines administered on or after September 1, 1991 must include the MM/DD/YY each vaccine was given. Students with a medical condition that prevents them from receiving required vaccinations must provide medical documentation from a physician. Such cases will be addressed on an individual basis.

M State recognizes that students may be conscientious objectors to immunizations/vaccinations, including influenza. Clinical affiliates determine whether students objecting to immunizations/vaccinations, including influenza, may find it impossible to participate in clinical courses, which will influence their ability to successfully complete the program.

The Health Declaration Form supporting documentation is due to the program designee two (2) weeks prior to the start of class.

Immunizations are an additional cost for the student.

National Background Study Students participating in the M State Cardiovascular Technology program are required to complete a National Background Study. The national background study is in addition to the required study with the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Information included in the national background study

includes; County Criminal Record Search, National Criminal Database Search, ID Search and a National Sex Offender Public Registry Search.

Students will be contacted with specific information and instructions prior to their first clinical experience and will be expected to meet the deadline indicated or will jeopardize their clinical experience. Students are responsible for all costs associated with the national background study.

Discrepancies found during the national background study are kept confidential. Students should be aware that if discrepancies are found, it is M State’s contractual responsibility to disclose the specific results, while maintaining the student’s confidentiality, to the clinical facility or facilities where the student is assigned. At no time will a student’s name or identifying information be shared. Should a facility refuse a student placement based on the outcome of the national background study, the College will make a reasonable effort to locate an alternate clinical site as appropriate, but cannot guarantee such placement, nor that the placement will be in the community of choice.

Background checks are an additional expense for the student.

Laptop Requirement The Cardiovascular Technology program does require students to have laptops. Specific information regarding computers and support can be found at www.minnesota.edu/departments/its/. Students with Macs or Apple products may need to purchase special software to submit assignments in a format the instructor can open, and should be installed prior to the start of classes. Use of computers in the classroom is guided by the course syllabus. The College policy does not provide for use of smartphones, iPads, or other tablet devices in the classroom.

CPR/BLS Certification and ACLS classes Students are required to submit proof of current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR Certification upon acceptance into the program and are required to maintain certification throughout their education. It is the responsibility of the student to submit current documentation as received.

ACLS or Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification is also required before the student’s final semester of the program. This is another additional expense prior to Practicum I.

BLS and ACLS are additional expenses for the student.

Lead Vests/Aprons Students are required to purchase lead vests/skirts/thyroid collars before third semester of the program. This is for their maximum protection from radiation when they are in the cardiac catheterization lab. The instructor will arrange for students to be fitted for lead and to get the orders placed.

General Program Policies and Information

Non-Discrimination M State Cardiovascular Technology program will not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, age, color, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin. M State follows the MnSCU 1.B.1 Discrimination and Harassment Policy: http://www.mnscu.edu/board/procedure.

Liability Insurance Practice liability insurance covers situations pertaining to injury of others. Students are encouraged, but not required, to have their own personal liability insurance.

Health Insurance M State and associated clinical facilities do not provide students general health insurance. While clinical facilities may make emergency medical care available to students in the event of injury, the costs associated with the treatment of injury or illness during lab, classroom, service learning, job shadowing, or clinical experiences is the responsibility of the students. Students are encouraged to have their own adequate health insurance coverage.

Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure Cardiovascular Technology students will be exposed to blood, body fluids, blood borne pathogens and contaminated invasive sharp instruments. Student exposure will be addressed according to facility policy, at the student’s expense.

Latex Exposure Students with a latex allergy are advised to consult with their health care provider prior to lab and clinical experiences. Students with a latex allergy also need to inform the program faculty prior to beginning lab experiences to minimize exposure.

Legal Documents and Student Credentials Cardiovascular Technology students ARE NOT to sign or witness any legal documents such as surgical permits, consents, wills, advanced directives, power of attorney, code status, etc.

Unless otherwise directed, Cardiovascular Technology students will use sCIS (student Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist) with their legal signature when signing patient care documentation.

Student Learning Outcomes Program and courses student learning outcomes are based in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective learning domains to be successful entry-level Cardiovascular Invasive Specialists. Students earn passing grades by meeting student learning outcomes for each course. Successful completion of the program is achieved when students meet program learning outcomes, which are achieved by successful completion of each course in the program. Students repeating any courses in the program are required to complete and submit all assignments as though they have not taken the course before.

Grading Policy All required courses, including general education and program courses must be completed with a minimum grade of “C” or better. The grading scale for each course is addressed in the course syllabus, and is at the discretion of the program faculty.

Attendance Attendance at scheduled courses is CRUCIAL to the successful completion of the program, and that transfers to successful employment as a Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist. Students are expected to be present, physically and mentally, and prepared for active participation for all experiences in the classroom, lab, clinical and service learning opportunities.

If you are unable to attend class, you are required to call at least 1 hour prior to scheduled class time. If your instructor is not available, leave a message on their voicemail at 218.299.6845. Students are expected to be present and punctual every scheduled day of the program. Content is very difficult to make up. Poor attendance reflects on your permanent record and will influence employment recommendations once you leave the program. Employers in the health care field demand good attendance of their employees because they rely on them so heavily. Therefore, good attendance is an attribute employers seek out.

If a student is absent from clinical experience, he/she must follow the instructions noted by the instructor at the onset of the rotation.

Chronic tardiness and absences will be defined as more than 4 tardies or 3 absences within one semester.

Issues related to pregnancy or other long-term health conditions will be handled on an individual basis. The student is encouraged to notify the instructor as soon as possible if attendance may be affected. The health and welfare of the student will always be of first consideration.

Failure of the student to follow the above policy for attendance will result in probation.

Financial Aid, Academic and Advising Records Financial aid, enrollment, academic and advising records are kept in accordance with M State College Policy.

Program Records Retention Health Declaration forms, immunization records, CPR and other records required at the start of the program are kept together as a cohort. Students who find themselves repeating courses may have to submit documentation at the time they resume the program, including any updated requirements. Documents submitted at the start of the program will be destroyed upon cohort graduation. Students should not expect to be able to retrieve records from the program. Students are strongly encouraged to keep personal copies of all documentation submitted for their own records.

Complaints and Appeals The Cardiovascular Technology program strives to resolve complaints at the lowest possible level according to College policy. Complaints should first be addressed with the party with whom disagreement exists. If resolution can’t be met, then the student should first address the instructor. Then the program director, and final step would be the program academic dean.

Appeals of program and College policies follow the College Appeal policies and procedures.

Course Progression The Cardiovascular Technology program is a selective program. Students must be accepted into the program to take CVRI courses. Students must follow the program planner in order to graduate in a timely manner. Students must also follow established course prerequisites.

If a student is unsuccessful in program courses, a seat in the next course offering is not guaranteed. Laboratory and clinical course maximum enrollment is determined by accreditation standards. Seats will be available on a space available basis. Students who are unsuccessful in program courses should communicate with the program director to determine seat availability, which may not be determined

until the end of the academic term. Seats will be granted on a first come first served basis, determined by communication by school email with the program director.

Students who are unsuccessful in any combination of two program courses (CVRI), are not eligible to continue in the Cardiovascular Technology program, and will be required to reapply for the next available start date. Which may not be the next semester.

If a student successfully completes CVRI courses, and chooses to withdraw from the program, and then decides they want to finish, it will be up to the program director’s discretion. Time withdrawn from the program will be a factor. Student must take a reentry and competency exam. Each scenario would be evaluated on an individual basis to assess where the student is competent and if he or she should or shouldn’t continue within the program.

Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty may include, but is not limited to, making false claims or statements, submitting false information, altering official documents or records, and promoting others to attempt any of the above. Any action that may mislead an instructor, clinical preceptor, or classmates with false information would be included. All forms of academic dishonesty will result in program probation. All reports of academic dishonesty or misconduct will be treated under the College Code of Conduct policy.

Academic Integrity/Plagiarism All academic work, written or otherwise, submitted by students to their instructor or clinical preceptor is expected to be of their own thought, research, or self-expression. In cases where students are unsure of plagiarism, they are obligated to consult with the instructor prior to the submission and submission deadline.

Plagiarism occurs when students submit work claiming it to be their own, but is actually borrowed ideas, organization, wording, etc. from another source without appropriate acknowledgement. Plagiarism includes reproducing someone else’s work, whether it is a published article, chapter of a book, paper from a friend or purchased from the internet, course notes, etc. Plagiarism also includes practice of employing or allowing another person to alter or revise the work a student submits as his/her own. Students may discuss assignments among themselves or with an instructor or tutor, but when the actual work is done, it must be done by the student, and student alone.

When a student’s assignment involves research, the student must carefully acknowledge exactly what, where and how this research is employed. If the words of someone else are used, the student must use quotation marks around the passage, and add appropriate indication of the origin.

Plagiarism includes making slight or simple changes in text while leaving the organization, content and phraseology intact. Resources to avoid plagiarism include:

Social Media The use of social media sites such as Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, Twitter, blogs, etc. provide the ability for students to communicate and receive support from peers. Students need to be aware that publishing information on these sites is public, even if the site is considered private. Nothing on social media is truly private.

Students must refrain from discussing clinical sites, patients or clinical rotations in any online forum or webpage.

Graduation Requirements Students must submit a graduation application according to M State policy for completed degrees to be conferred. Failure to complete a graduation application by the announced deadline may results in delayed graduation and ability to take certification exams. M State confers degrees three times per year at the conclusion of the fall, spring and summer terms.

Minimum level of expectation for satisfactory achievement of program outcomes shall be a cumulative GPA of 2.0, with an earned grade of “C” in all required course work for degree completion.

Students are required to take a MINIMUM of one call weekend during Practicum III, and a combined total of 600 hours of on the job training documented in the clinical logging app before graduation.

Laboratory, Service Learning, Job Shadowing and Clinical Policies **Infraction of the following policies will result in the student being dismissed from the experience. This

will result in an unexpected absence and grades of zero for the day, which may influence a student’s ability to successfully complete the program. The student may be placed on program probation.

Student Work Policy Cardiovascular Technology students are assigned to clinical rotations in a learning capacity, therefore, students are not expected to perform independently as paid staff. Students will NOT be utilized as a substitute cardiac cath lab staff for any procedures. Should students feel they are put into this position, they should immediately contact the clinical instructor.

Students assigned to clinical rotations in a learning capacity as part of the Cardiovascular Technology program will not receive payment for clinical rotations. Paid experiences may not substitute for clinical experiences. Not all facilities realize this, and may want to get students hired quickly, and offer to start paying them before graduation, this is NOT acceptable.

Clinical Case and Role Requirements Cardiovascular Technology students are required to keep a Case Log during clinical courses to demonstrate that they meet the required number of cases, performing in scrub and hemodynamic monitoring roles.

Uniforms M State Cardiovascular Technology students will be required to purchase the M State scrubs and scrub hat, which will be the required uniform, along with lead aprons. Uniforms will be worn during laboratory, service learning, job shadowing and clinical experiences. Fleece, sweatshirts, and/or hoodies are not appropriate when students are required to be in uniform. Uniforms should be worn proudly. They help everyone to identify M State students, and every student should remember they are representing M State while wearing them.

When engaged in laboratory, service learning, job shadowing, or clinical experiences, students are expected to adhere to the following dress code:

• Clean, wrinkle and odor free uniform • Uniform should fit loosely, but cover the body with movement. Pants should be hemmed to a

length that does not drag on the floor. • White or black socks; white or black, quiet-soled, closed toe shoes. Crocs and clogs are not

appropriate.

• Shirts worn under scrubs must be solid white, without logos. Shirts may not hang below the scrub top, and should be tucked in. At clinical sites, when we change into the hospital issued scrubs, shirts are NOT allowed under scrub tops for infection control purposes.

• M State photo name tag or facility issued name tag should be worn on the chest area of the uniform.

• Hijabs and scarves are left to the discretion of the clinical facility.

• Attire for non-direct patient care activities may be required at the discretion of the faculty.

Jewelry and Body Art M State Cardiovascular Technology program follows the policies of clinical partners. General guidelines are as follows:

• Hand jewelry is discouraged. Wedding and engagement rings may be acceptable, but needs to be taken off when scrubbing into cases, so best to leave it at home where it is safe and won’t get lost. Plus, gloves, hand sanitizer, and repetitive movements can be very hard on jewelry. M State and clinical facilities are NOT responsible for loss of or damage to engagement or wedding rings.

• One pair of stud earrings, worn in the ear lobes is the only acceptable piercing. Other forms of visible piercings are not acceptable.

• Necklaces and neck chains are not acceptable.

• Visible tattoos must be covered if possible.

Personal Hygiene and Tobacco Use • Cardiovascular Technology is a scent free program. Fragrances, including but not limited to,

cigarette smoke, body spray, perfume, etc. are not acceptable. Students are expected to be scent/odor free before and during all laboratory, job shadow, service learning and clinical experiences.

• Tobacco use is not allowed on clinical facility property. • Fingernails will extend no further than ¼ inch beyond the tip of the finger, and should be clean.

Nail art, nail polish, artificial nails, tips, wraps, enhancements, appliques for adornments are not permitted.

• Hair color should be a natural hue. Examples of unacceptable colors include: blue, pink, purple, yellow, green, etc.

• Hair should be off the shoulders or pulled back in a professional manner. Bangs must be trimmed to allow good visual perception, or controlled off the face. Headbands should be small, of neutral color, with no logos.

• Beards and moustaches must be neatly trimmed, and may be required to be covered.

Unacceptable attire Students represent themselves, the Cardiovascular Technology program, M State, and the Cardiovascular Technology profession. Professionalism, including attire, is expected. Unacceptable attire includes the following:

• Unprofessional clothing including, but not limited to, denim, skinny jeans, leggings, athletic wear, cargo pants, shorts, short skirts or garments made from sheer fabrics.

• Attire that reveals the abdomen, lower back, upper thighs, shoulders or cleavage. • Attire that reveals undergarments or lack thereof.

Professional Boundaries Cardiovascular Technology students are expected to maintain appropriate professional boundaries. Boundaries are defined as limits that protect the space between the professional’s power and the client’s vulnerability, creating a safe connection between professional and patient. Boundary violations occur when a professional exploits the professional-patient relationship to meet personal needs, rather than patient needs. This violation breaches the fundamental nature of care that obligates the professional to place the patient’s needs first. Patients expect Cardiovascular Technology students, and other health care professionals, to act in their best interest and refrain from inappropriate involvement.

Health care professionals, including Cardiovascular Technology students, are expected to demonstrate respect of all cardiac cath lab team members. This includes addressing surgeons and physicians as “Doctor” and their last name while at clinical, even if a personal acquaintance is maintained outside of the clinical practice.

During procedures, conversation is to remain patient centered and confidential.

The Cardiovascular Technology student is not employed by the clinical facility, and therefore is a guest. Clinical facilities have the right to exclude students from participating in clinical experience if professional boundary violations are perceived. Failure to maintain professional boundaries may result in immediate dismissal from the clinical site, program probation, suspension or dismissal.

Confidentiality Patient confidentiality cannot be over emphasized. The patient has the legal right to expect confidentiality of his/her care. The Cardiovascular Technologist and students has the responsibility to protect patient confidentiality. Students may not give information about a patient or patient occurrence to anyone who is not affiliated with the patient’s care. Patient information is even protected from family members, without proper consent. Conversation relating to the patient is permitted in the clinical area only. Patients or patient care occurrences are not to be discussed in public places, such as elevators, cafeterias, student lounge, at home or other public places, including social media sites.

Students may not photocopy, or electronically transmit any private health information or any part of the patient medical record. Students are responsible to follow all guidelines and facility policies of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Students are required to attend a HIPAA training and sign HIPAA agreement with clinical facilities. All patient assignments must be stripped of all patient identifiers, including room numbers, prior to submission. Failure to maintain patient confidentiality may result in fines, program probation, suspension or dismissal.

Use of personal cellphones, in class or at clinical facilities is strictly prohibited. Failure to adhere to this policy will result in program probation, suspension or dismissal. Student may be subject to College Code of Conduct policies.

Ethical Behavior Cardiovascular Technology is a helping profession which requires adherence to high standards of ethical conduct. The cardiovascular technology student embracing this code of ethics accepts the trust and responsibility invested in him/her by the patient, the patient’s family, and the cath lab team. It follows that responsibility for honesty is an integral part of a cardiovascular technology program.

The Cardiovascular Technology faculty believe in the integrity of the role of the cardiovascular technologist. This includes student’s behavior in all aspects of community and service. The M State Cardiovascular Technology student is held to the highest standard of academic honesty in the classroom, lab, service learning and clinical setting.

The Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) website is a resource to identify legal and ethical behaviors expected of all cardiovascular technologists. M State faculty expect students to adhere to the same standards.

Disciplinary Action M State Cardiovascular Technology program officials reserve the right to discipline students for unsatisfactory performance and/or personal conduct and infarctions of the hospital’s policies and/or program policies; actions occurring at clinical or college.

Reasons for which program probation might be an issue, includes but is not limited to the following:

• Unsatisfactory performance of duties • Infraction of hospital policy • Infraction of M State Cardiovascular Technology program guidelines • Improper safety practices • Repeated tardiness • Leaving early without permission or communication • Excessive excused and unexcused absences • Unprofessional or unethical conduct • Insubordination

Immediate Termination/Dismissal The M State Cardiovascular Technology program reserves the right to immediate dismissal for unsatisfactory actions of any of its students. Reasons that any student can be discharged from duties or class include, but are not limited to the following:

• Inconsiderate, rude, or abusive treatment of patients, visitors, staff, students, or faculty members

• Badmouthing or negative talk about a patient, visitor, staff, students, or faculty members. • Gross misuse of time, or equipment. • Theft • Violation of patient confidentiality • Insubordination • The conviction, known use of, distribution of and/or possession of an illegal controlled

substance • Intoxication at school or clinical • Three (3) consecutive unexcused absences • Cheating in a school course • Unsafe practice during patient care • Inability to perform required skills • Request of the surgical or clinical supervisor • Failure to cooperate with remedial instruction or to improve after probationary proceedings

Cardiovascular Technology Program Probation Program probation is disciplinary action taken when a student breaches policies of the Cardiovascular Technology program course syllabi, program student handbook, industry standard, safety procedures, or College standards. The severity of consequences increases with each infraction.

Probation Procedure 1. Instructor promptly discusses each incident with student or students privately. The student will

be provided the opportunity to provide their side of the story. The instructor determines if the student will be

• Placed on probation. The student will be made aware promptly if they will be placed on program probation.

• Permitted to remain in the classroom, lab, clinical, service learning or job shadow setting.

• The instructor will document the conversation with the student. 2. Instructor will document the incident, performance improvement plan, and related

communication using the Notice of Probation form. 3. Instructor and student will meet to discuss the Notice of Probation, within one (1) week of the

incident. The student will be provided the opportunity to document their side of the story. The instructor and the student will sign the form. *Note, this step may be omitted if the Notice of Probation is used as documentation in step 1.

4. The Notice of Probation is maintained in program records and remains in effect until the student graduates.

Probation Consequences Unsafe practice may require dismissal from the program immediately. Examples of incidents requiring immediate dismissal include, but are not limited to: Theft from the classroom, laboratory, service learning, job shadow or clinical site; putting the patient at risk for a catastrophic injury or sentinel event.

First incident

• Notice of Probation form completed • The student will be assigned a failing grade (F) on the exam, assignment, or evaluation, which

may determine the student’s ability to be successful in the course.

Second incident

• Notice of Probation form completed • The student will be assigned a failing grade (F) for the course.

Choosing of Practicum Site

The final semester of the program is a practicum I, II, and III. They are each 5 credits for a total of 15 credits. This requires students to be fulltime, 40 hours per week, working with a RCIS preceptor in a cardiac cath lab at a regional clinical facility. The instructor has to be able to be within a reasonable driving distance to check on the student. The facilities, and number of students they will take, may vary from year to year. The selection process will be a completely random drawing, however the program director may use different methods to decide order of drawing. Ex: student with best attendance draws first, etc. The program director will arrange for placement as early as possible, to allow students to start seeking housing, and life accommodations. Students must be prepared to drive back and forth each day to practicum, or move and pay for living expenses for this semester. M State is not responsible for these costs. Possible sites include, but are not limited to:

Sanford Fargo, Essentia Fargo, Altru Grand Forks, Sanford Bemidji, Sanford Sioux Falls, Sanford Bismarck.

Students are required to have a total of at LEAST 600 hours for this semester. They will be required to take at least one weekend of call to graduate. They will also be strongly encouraged to take the RCIS exam before graduation. Passing this will exempt them from having to take the equally challenging Practicum Final exam.
