Letter to the Parents

Dear Parent,

We would like to encourage you to consider the Automotive Technology Program at Halifax Community College as an option for your rising junior. As you may know, the automotive industry is currently undergoing huge technological changes as manufacturers are under increasing pressure to meet the new, more stringent fuel mileage requirements. The requirements have brought about changes such as hybrid vehicles and other alternative fuel vehicles.

If you elect to enroll your child in this program, the class will meet on the campus of Halifax Community College. He or she will take classes in the following order - Basic Automotive Electricity, Advanced Electricity/Electronics, Engine Performance and Brake Systems. The entire program consists of four semesters. When your child graduates high school, he or she will also be a certificate graduate of the Halifax Community College Automotive Technology Program.

Our instructors have more than 80 years of combined experience in the automotive industry and all are Automotive Service Excellence certified master automobile technicians. Your child will be learning from the best, and the education he or she receives gives them the skills to excel in the automotive field. They also have the option to continue their education and receive additional training and degrees. Your child will apply the knowledge they have learned in chemistry, physics and geometry (among other subjects) as they learn to diagnose different concerns on today’s vehicles. If your child is looking for a real-world educational experience, we have just the program.

Many of our graduates have gained employment locally at White’s Chevrolet/Ford/Chrysler, Alliance Nissan, Alliance Honda, Quality Pontiac, Bone’s Toyota and Boyd Chevrolet as well as many others. Some students have gone on to open their own shops. Some have taken what they have learned and decided to enroll in engineering programs to learn more about the systems that they study in this program. The possibilities are endless!

So how do you get started?Your son or daughter will need to indicate their interest in the program to the guidance counselor at his or her high school. Each student will need to complete the Career and College Promise Eligibility Form, which is included in this packet. They will also need to complete a Halifax Community College Application for Admission and the Halifax Community College Career and College Promise Registration Application, also included.

Students are responsible for talking with their guidance counselors to discuss minimum requirements for participating in the Career and College Promise Program.

If you have any questions about this program, please feel free to contact Phillip Massey or Hunter Taylor using the contact information below. Also, please join our program’s Facebook page by going to www.halifaxcc.edu/automotive.

Thank you for your time and I hope to talk with you soon.

Sincerely,

Hunter S. TaylorAutomotive Department Head, Halifax Community College
