4 Sourcewell Career & College Readiness

Career resource collaborationSourcewell seeks to build collaborative partnerships among schools, businesses/industry, agencies, and colleges to provide comprehensive Career and College Readiness Planning by pursuing the following goals:

• Facilitate relationship building and coordination with regional partners to develop alignment of support programs.

• Provide career-planning resources and seek innovative ideas through Innovation Funding projects and research. Sourcewell also provides career-planning data to assist schools in decision making.

• Enhance opportunities for students to participate in real-world work experiences.

• Enhance opportunities for students to earn college credit and skill certificates to improve career knowledge, workforce preparation, and experience business connections.

Trends in our regionThe counties of Cass, Crow Wing, Todd, and Wadena are facing some workforce challenges. We continue to experience skilled labor shortages due to a number of factors. In 2012, there were 2,301 seniors in Region 5 public schools. This number has dropped gradually to 1,881 for the class of 2017. This reflects a drop of 420 students, or 18 percent, in the six-year period. We are also anticipating a large number of retirements from the Baby Boomer generation. This trend is reflected in current low unemployment rates that will likely continue well into the future.

Career Planning focus will be on providing students information to help them make good investments in their education and training experiences to prepare them to be successful in meeting regional employment needs.

Flow is an optimal state of consciousness wherein you feel your best and perform at your best. According to research, those with the most flow in their lives are the most satisfied with their lives. Simply put, flow follows focus. By monitoring what gets students into flow, we can help them find their Metier: the job and life they love that love them back.

Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS)The Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS) is an Internet-based system that combines a wealth of career, educational, and labor market information into one comprehensive, easy-to-use exploration tool. MCIS Junior is a version for middle school students (not funded). With MCIS, students and clients can:

• Learn about over 520 occupations.• Develop a personal portfolio and personal learning plan.• Research colleges, universities, and career schools.• Find scholarships and financial aid.• Improve job search skills and create a resume.

Cost: The Perkins Consortium currently provides this program for Region 5 schools; however, accountability data shows that this program is under-utilized in our region and funding may not be available next year if use is not increased.

Districts are encouraged to increase the use of this tool by:• Providing staff training at regional MCIS events.• Embedding MCIS into all high school grade levels.• Utilize Sourcewell and MDE support including “MCIS Quick Start” guides.• Provide MCIS demonstrations at staff meetings and trainings.• Utilize the many resources in the Teacher Modules in MCIS for all subject areas.
