About Career Pathways

The career options available at GHD are attractive, with operations now in four major regions, and our strategy to 2020 focused on being client-service led, responding to the global demands of water, energy, and urbanisation.

Our contemporary approach to career planning encourages you to develop a portfolio of skills and experiences that provide the capability to do a variety of roles in the future.

GHD’s employee-owned model also provides the potential to invest in the firm for the long term.

Only you know where your passions and real interests lie and what you hope to achieve from your career. Take the time to think about where you are at and where you’d like to be. GHD can then work with you to provide support and assist you to get there.

This booklet outlines GHD’s core career pathways – Technical and Design, Operational Management, Business Development & Marketing, and Business Services. Each pathway offers the opportunity to contribute to GHD’s success and gain professional fulfilment.

Looking at your career in a holistic way is critical. The key considerations in the modern business environment are qualifications and training, along with valuable experiences and capabilities you can gain from working on a variety of projects and office locations that will enhance your skills and equip you for a range of job roles.

It is also important to think about your personal and family situation and the role work plays at different stages of your life.

Page 5: Career pathways

5

Start by identifying which career pathway your discipline aligns to:

• Technical & Design (Blue)• Business Services (Green)• Business Development/Marketing (Pink)• Operational Management (Yellow)

Look at the circular diagram associated with your discipline. There are some representative examples so you can get a feel of what is to come. Identify your career level, role & qualifications and then start to look at determining a base line for confirming where you are now.

Subject Matter Experts from each of the Career Pathways have identified capabilities, valuable experiences, qualifications/training and accreditations that are useful to develop at this career level to ensure you have a good portfolio of skill. The detailed descriptors that explain each capability or valuable experience will be available when we launch the Career Pathways website.

Have a look at some of the other pathways to see what would be needed for you to develop skills suitable to expanding your career options in the future. You may be able to identify skills or experiences you already have that could give you more options to explore in the future.

Identifying Your Career Pathway

So, where do you start?

A number of GHD people have provided profiles of how they have developed an interesting career at GHD. The example on the next page is just a sample of more to come on the website. Likewise there are tools that will be available that can support you at critical points to gain personal insights that may help you define what will really enable you to demonstrate your strengths.

Whether you’re looking for a new opportunity, a different direction, or being more successful in your current role, there are a few questions you can ask yourself to help progress your career:

• Are you doing what you enjoy?• Are you the best you can be? Would you benefit from

updating your skills or learning new ones?• Are you prepared for the future? Staying on top of industry

and market trends will help you keep pace with new technology and ways of thinking

• Do you know how to make the next career step happen?• What do you need to prepare, who do you need to talk to?• Would you like to have the opportunity to invest in the

business as a shareholder?

So, once you have your own thoughts, engage in a conversation with your Manager and others who can guide you about your career.

I joined GHD as a Graduate Civil Engineer in 2001 after a 10 year career external to GHD in Accounts/Financial Administration. I was in an Accounts role at an engineering company and I learnt about defence engineering which ignited a spark in me to change careers and embark on my engineering degree.

I focused on building my technical and Job Manager skills for seven years. My key learnings were applying industry guidelines and techniques, design concepts, scoping work, proposals and report writing.

My next challenge was taking on Senior Engineer responsibilities in 2008. I was Job Manager for large projects including liaising with senior management in client organisations. The highlight was a $12m complex project.

My career led me to opportunities to take on Project Director roles in the last two years. This experience was invaluable because I was given responsibility for a job that was off track and I worked on a strategy to engage the right people, managing variations and developing the skills of the job manager.

My current role is Team Leader for a group of 26 people. This career opportunity has been rich in developing my knowledge of how GHD works more broadly, my people leadership and client relationship skills.

From Graduate Engineer to Team Leader

Detailed descriptors will be available on the Career Pathways website for each of the valuable experiences and capabilties.

A technical career in engineering can commence at Graduate/trainee level and progress to Technical Executive level.

*Other examples of streams within the Technical & Design pathways are also in development and will be available in April 2015.

Qualifications/Training

In this diagram you will see the qualifications most engineers commence with an undergraduate degree or diploma in engineering. This is often supplemented by a post graduate qualification and a professional accreditation. Continuing technical training sourced by the GHD Business School or external providers will then assist you in enhancing your practical skills and knowledge critical to serving our clients.

Capabilities

Around 70 percent of your capabilities will be developed through on the job experiences, 20 percent through coaching and 10 percent through formal learning. There are key capabilities you would be expected to demonstrate at each career level. These include concept design, scope definition, preparing reports & proposals, client communication and contract advice.

Valuable Experiences

Whilst skills and capabilities are important, you can really help accelerate your career by gaining a wide variety of experiences, taking some personal risk, and being mobile. All this will deepen your knowledge and equip you to work in many different roles now and in the future.

Roles

Some typical roles in an engineering Technical pathway include Team Member, Job Manager, Service Line Coordinator, Project Manager, Project Director.

Changing Pathways

You may decide in the course of your Technical career that you wish to move into an Operational Management, Business Development or perhaps Business Services stream, in which case there are capabilities and experiences you should start to develop in order to do that.

Through a mix of on the job experiences, coaching, and formal learning, you would be expected to develop key capabilities in areas such as statistical analysis, sampling methodology, risk assessment, and knowing about legislation and standards.

Valuable Experiences

These are experiences that broaden your knowledge and provide you with additional challenges. Experiences that are beneficial include working in a different location, delivering conference papers, serving on internal or external committees, participating in partnerships and alliances, and relieving in more senior roles.

Roles

Some typical roles in the Science stream include Environmental Scientist, Senior Hydrologist, Ecologist, Geo/Spatial Analyst, and Spatial Sciences Manager, along with Job Manager, Project Director, and Service Line Co-ordinator responsibilities.

Changing Pathways

If you wish to move into an Operational Management or Business Development pathway, there are capabilities and experiences you should start to develop in order to do that.

GHD has key Business Services functions in Finance, Information Services, People, Innovation, HSE, and Operational/Administrative Support that provide rewarding careers in these specialist areas.

Qualifications/Training

Depending on the role and functional area, a tertiary or vocational qualification in the related discipline is usually required. Often post graduate qualifications and accreditations are desirable for more senior level roles. Continuing professional development training run by external industry bodies and sourced by the GHD Business School will then assist you in maintaining your specialist knowledge.

Capabilities

There are varied capabilities you would be expected to demonstrate at each career level depending on your discipline. These include business acumen, project management, sound interpersonal skills, data analysis and reporting.

Valuable Experiences

You can really develop in a Business Services function by gaining a range of different experiences that enable you to add value to the business and provide sound advice and solutions. These will range from experiencing the same type of role but in a different Operating Centre or taking on special projects critical to the business that will expand your experience and technical depth.

Roles

Roles in a Business Services pathway might include Manager, Analyst, Business Partner, and Administration Coordinator.

Changing Pathways

Depending on your qualifications and experience, there may be options to move into other pathways or Business Services streams. There are capabilities and experiences you should start to develop in order to do that.

Business Development & Marketing Career Pathway

With our focus on being client-service led, GHD’s Business Development & Marketing pathways offer some new and exciting career options.

Qualifications/Training

A range of tertiary or vocational qualifications may be applicable for BD & Marketing roles. These may be in a technical discipline, or in business/marketing. Post graduate qualifications like an MBA are also worth considering for more senior roles as well as ongoing training.

Capabilities

Key capabilities to develop are strong interpersonal skills mixed with technical / specialist knowledge.

Note in the diagram, business acumen, relationship management, creating value for clients, and proposal development are also important.

Valuable Experiences

Valuable experiences to gather include roles which offer exposure to client events, joint venture partnerships, major pursuits, and contract negotiations.

Roles

Roles in a BD/Marketing pathway include Client Relationship Manager, Business Development Manager, OC Market Leader, Marketing Coordinator, and Communications Manager.

Changing Pathways

Depending on your qualifications and experience, there may be options to move into or return to a Technical, Operational Management or Business Services pathway. There are capabilities and experiences you should start to develop in order to do that.

Operational Management Career Pathway

GHD’s Operational Management career pathway offers opportunities to lead small and large teams, develop strategy, and manage the commercial performance of our business at both the local and regional levels.

Qualifications/Training

Qualifications may be varied in this pathway, usually an undergraduate technical degree. This may be supplemented by a post graduate business qualification and training in management and leadership.

Capabilities

Development of GHD’s leadership capabilities is important in the Operational Management pathway. This incorporates setting direction, managing, and personal development at increasingly more complex levels as you move from Service Group, OC, to regional based and global roles.

Valuable Experiences

Refer to the diagram for examples of experiences that would be valuable, such as opportunities to lead people, manage organisational change or a new initiative, have profit and loss accountability, and roles which offer regional or international experience.

Roles

Operational Management roles currently include Team Leader, Service Group Manager, Operations Manager, Operating Centre Manager, and General Manager.

Changing Pathways

From an Operational Management Pathway you may choose to return to a more technical client facing role, or a BD/Marketing role. There are capabilities and experiences you should start to develop in order to do that.
