On behalf of the Florida Career Pathways Board of Directors, Welcome to the 2017 Florida Career Pathways Network Symposium. We are excited that you have chosen to attend our annual statewide professional development conference focused on Career Pathways and other related educational initiatives.

This year’s Symposium will again provide an opportunity to hear perspectives from key representatives from around the state, as well as national perspectives. Our theme this year “Career Pathways: Growing & Cultivating the System in an Evolving Landscape” will feature best practices that will provide innovative ideas and allow for robust conversations around current and future trends in Career & Technical Education and Career Pathways.

We have a fabulous line up of keynote speakers to include: Troy Miller with the Florida College Access Network and Mary Wright with Jobs for the Future. These two speakers will share with us immediately after our Best Practices Awards Luncheon on Thursday. On Friday, we are pleased to feature SFC Reynolds and SSG Adams with the US Army Female Engagement Team who will share the importance of encouraging females in more non-traditional career pathways. These young ladies will share their personal stories and provide ideas for engaging and encouraging females to pursue career paths usually filled by males.

We look forward to seeing all of you at our Networking Reception on Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Take advantage of this informal opportunity to meet with and get first hand information from other conference attendees while enjoying the beautiful ambiance of the Jupiter Beach Resort.

As always, Thank You for affording me the privilege of serving as the FCPN President for the past several years. I am sincerely grateful for the support and leadership I have had from the field as well as from the FCPN Board of Directors. I want to personally thank the FCPN Board and the Symposium Planning Committee for a job well done and to you, our conference participants for your support and attendance.

Please visit us on the web at www.flcpn.org for upcoming events, to include our National Career Pathways Network Conference which will take place at the Hyatt Regency at the Arc - October 25-27, 2017 in St. Louis, MI(http://ncpn.info/).

Summer Engineering Academy: BEST at Palm Beach StateBest practices of BEST Summer Academy: In June 2016, as part of Palm Beach State College’s InnovATE Award from the National Science Foundation, PBSC hosted the inaugural “Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology” (BEST) Summer Academy, a free 3-week engineering exploration program for high school students to learn about engineering careers. Forty students participated from 18 high schools from across Martin, Palm Beach, and Broward counties. Students met with professional engineers, designed and built projects, toured local industry, and participated in team-building and peer leadership activities. Attendees at this best practice will learn about success in the recruitment, planning, and delivery of a secondary STEM focused summer program to grow postsecondary enrollment.

Necessary Skills Now: InfusingEmployability Skills into Mechatronics and Cyber Security ProgramsEmployers value the technical skills of new employees, but are unimpressed with many of their soft skills, like teamwork, dependability, ethics, and so forth. But teachers have little room in existing programs to add more topics. This project is bringing teachers and employers together to develop approaches to infuse six targeted employability skills into existing course lessons and projects using project based learning in two cutting-edge programs: advanced manufacturing (aka, mechatronics), and cyber security. (A collaboration with CORD, CSSIA, SCATE, FLATE funded by NSF DUE-1501990.)

Preparing Primary Students for High School Computer CTE ProgramsBroward County Public Schools has begun preparing students for High School CTE programs by creating and developing Computer CTE programs within Elementary and Middle Schools. Students earn Digital Tools and Industry Certifications within these programs. Most of these programs were created within existing Elementary/Middle School elective or core classes by integrating Industry Certifications into the curriculum. We have created program structure models for schools to implement and create programs. We have presented to Middle School and Elementary School Principals and Assistant Principals on the implementation and creation of programs and the benefit to their schools. Through these meetings, we have shown how schools (in Florida) can benefit through student IC attainment, funding, and acceleration grade by implementing these programs.

Closing Session Friday January 13, 2017

SFC Jacqueline Reynolds — United States Army Recruiting Command 2nd Recruiting Brigade Miami Recruiting BattalionI stand here today as a product of two parents who never attended high school. I grew up partially as a youth in Jamaica, where I was born and thus had to endure struggles of not having both parents in the household because they were both away, here, in the United States working to provide a better life for my siblings and I. During that time we were taken advantage of; in that, money that was being sent was not provided to us. I then stopped attending Catholic school and therefore was staying at home doing nothing. The result of this allowed me not to take things for granted and when I was afforded the opportunity to enlist as a senior in high school, I did. First I completed and received a high school diploma, Associates in General studies, Bachelors in Psychology, Masters in Healthcare Administration and now pursuing my Doctoral Degree in Education. I have been through lows and highs of financial stability in my youth and now as an adult I can share how to improve one’s situation. Therefore, I believe that because of my passion to excel in life, regardless of where you started, it is where you end or where you foresee yourself, as well as the end result that matters.

Currently I have fifteen and a half years on active duty, I have a lot of experience and information

to share. I have been tested mentally, physically and emotionally since I have entered the Army. I do believe that with all the career choices that are available in society today, the Army hands-down provides various opportunities to learn different things. During these years, I have managed to be trained as an Equal Opportunity Leader, Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, Sexual Harassment Assault Response Prevention, Basic Instructor and an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Trainer among others. I have one deployment to Iraq from March 2003 to February 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The Army has been great to me and therefore it comes very easy for me to discuss this with anyone. My religious background has allowed me to view things in a positive manner and to keep persevering. My family has been with me throughout this entire journey. My family is my support system and has been so more than ever especially with having two young children; my daughter Lanai, 5 years old and my son Michael, 2 years old. My children have benefited extremely from the Medical and Dental services provided through the Army due to my service. I like to think that my children are also serving this country selflessly. In addition to my service to this nation I have a sister also in the Army who is a Chief Warrant Officer and she currently has more than 20 years. She has been assigned as an attaché officer for the last fifteen and a half years; basically she is a liaison at the U.S. Embassies worldwide. Between the both of us, our family has sacrificed nearly forty years of selfless service. I have had the privilege of being a Healthcare Specialist for the last fourteen years, working amongst the Army’s best and brightest.

For me, I have had a unique experience, adventure and lifestyle throughout my time in the Army and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I will walk away at my retirement knowing that I pushed myself physically and mentally to uphold the traditions of the United States Army, that I have left a legacy for my family, as well as utilizing the educational benefits to achieve the highest academic honors. The only person you should strive to be better than is the person you were yesterday.

Finally, success is no accident, it is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all loving what you do, because only then you can be a better you.

Staff Sergeant Sasha K. Adams— Miami Recruiting Battalion Key West, FloridaStaff Sergeant Adams was born in Landstuhl, Germany in July of 1989. She grew up to a father in the Air Force and called a lot of places worldwide, home. She grew up as a troubled youth and attended 6 high schools, in 5 states in 4 years and still do not graduate high school. With problems at home SSG Adams reached out to an Army recruiter who enlisted her in a, no longer active, program in the Army which paid for GED testing at that time. SSG Adams enlisted in November 2006 as a Network Switching Operator from Fort Worth, Texas. Her intent was to serve for 4 years, and utilize the Army as a stepping stone in civilian life.

She left for Basic Combat Training at 17 years old. She hated waking up early, and she hated being yelled at for everything. Essentially, she hated the Army. As the weeks went by she realized that the drill sergeants were trying to break them down as civilians to build them back up as Soldiers. Ten years later, Staff Sergeant has been trained as Network Switching Operator, Microwave Systems Operator, Recruiter and a Recruiting Center Leader. Although SSG Adams has never deployed to a combat location, she has served in numerous locations worldwide

and has even work for premiere agencies such as the National Security Agency. In addition to technical skill training, SSG Adams has attended and excelled in multiple leadership courses required by the Army. She has attended marketing and management courses as well as being trained as an Equal Opportunity Leader and Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention Advocate receiving National Advocate certification. Staff Sergeant Adams has completed 112 college credits towards her Bachelors in Science from the University Of Maryland University College and has been awarded an Associates in Arts from the University Of Maryland University College.

Since serving in the Army, SSG Adams has been able to serve her country while earning a career where she will be eligible for retirement at 37 years old. She has not had to worry about any medical bills, or pay for a single college course out of pocket. Despite all this the biggest benefit to her decision was having the ability to meet and work with a diverse group of people and forge strong bonds that few people can understand. SSG Adams not only has skill sets that less than 1% of the population will ever be able to have but was able to set a path for herself very different than she had started out. Now as a recruiter, she appreciates the Army giving her the opportunity to provide that same opportunity to the youth of today.
