What is a Resume? A resume is a well-organized summary of your experiences, skills, and qualifications to demonstrate to future employers and internship sites your strengths. It is personalized and tailored to highlight the skills and talents you can bring to an organization. The purpose of a resume is to have an employer invite you to interview for a position. It can be important tool in helping you to apply for both internships and jobs. Boosting your Resume While crafting the perfect resume is important, gaining the experiences in which to highlight on your resume is even more important. Utilize your time at Franklin Pierce University, during the academic semester and the winter and summer breaks to take advantage of opportunities that allow to gain experience, hands on knowledge in your field, and build your network. • Work at a part-time or summer job that is related to the field in which you are you are interested. • Complete an internship (or more than one) in an industry or specific company that you would

like to work for in the future. • Participate in campus clubs or organizations and hold leadership positions. • Start a club or project on campus • Consider study abroad to learn more about another culture. • Learn a language. • Get a work study job on campus. • Volunteer at an organization in your field or to get experience with particular skills or

populations. • Join a professional association related to your field and attend conferences or networking events. • Participate in workshops to learn a new skill. • Complete a thesis or research project. • Create an online portfolio to highlight your work. • Apply for awards, scholarships, or grants. • Work toward certifications in your field

Creating Your Resume

Importance of Formatting A future employer or internship supervisor may receive dozens or even hundreds or resumes for a position for which you are applying. Statistics show that an employer may take only 5 to 30 seconds to do an initial review of a resume. Having a well-designed and easy to read resume can be helpful for the resume reader to quickly find what they are looking for. You can keep a resume to one page if you are just starting out in your field. You should consider multiple pages once you have been well established in your professional career.

• Avoid using electronic templates. They often don’t use the space on the page well and yours may end up looking just like someone else's resume. Start with a fresh document so that you can control the content and formatting.

• Use a conventional format so that an employer can quickly find what s/he is looking for. • Use color sparingly. Consider how your document will look if printed in black and white. • Use easy to reads fonts in a size that is easy enough to read. • Create emphasis with bold, font size, or capital letters for category headings or to highlight job titles. Be

careful not to overuse these font styles. • Some formatting such as underlining and italics may be difficult for document imaging technology such as

applicant tracking systems (ATS). • Consider bullet points for lengthy descriptions of your activities to create a list of activities. Don’t overuse

bullets and never use just one. • Allow enough “white space” on the page to allow the reader to focus in on the content. • Do not include a photograph or illustrations for a traditional resume. Consider adding a link to on online

portfolio to showcase creative work. • While, there are some fields in which creative resumes may be acceptable (example: graphic design).

Consider having two versions, one that is standard and one that is creative. Ask for feedback from professionals in the field to see if your creative resume hits the mark.

• Consider saving your document with your name and other identifying information, i.e., “JaneSmithInternPosition.doc”, instead of just “resume.doc”.

• Always bring extra copies to an interview or job fair. Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) Resumes are designed to be printed and should be designed as such. However, most often you will be submitting your resume electronically. To help manage the hiring process, many employers use computerized Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). These systems are programmed to scan resumes for specific keywords, former employers, years of experience and schools attended. Only resumes matching the specific criteria preprogramed by employers are passed on to hiring managers. Consider how to make sure your resume is maximized to get through an ATS.

• Mirror the keywords in your resume to key phrases from the employer’s job description and website. • Use keywords throughout your resume, not just in one section. Use robust descriptions of your experiences

to highlight these keywords. • Use skill, certification sections to highlight specific technical skills. Include specific skills, software,

certifications or techniques you have that are common in your field, such as “Microsoft Excel,” “use of pivot tables,” or “market research.”

• Spell out acronyms for professional organizations, certifications and other industry language. For example, use both “CPA” and “Certified Public Accountant.

Page 4: Career Resources · resume. Having a well-designed and easy to read resume can be helpful for the resume reader to quickly find what they are looking for. You can keep a resume to

• Avoid overly creative wording, as the computer may not match such words to what the employer is looking for. Some ATS systems are programmed to ignore vague and generic words such as “independent worker,” “successful,” etc. Use only job-specific language and avoid buzzwords words.

• Include your postal address. ATS are looking for complete contact information. • Avoid graphics, logos or tables as they can confuse ATS, which may lead to it rejecting your resume. • Use only common fonts and avoid font sizes less than 10.5 points. • Customize your resume for each job and choose industry specific key words.

Types of documents:

• Microsoft Word is considered the standard and most recognizable. It is easily emailed, uploaded or scanned. • PDFs can be great way to send or upload a larger document that also preserves formatting. They can be

opened by all systems and easily printed. However, document imaging technology or an ATS cannot always scan PDFs accurately.

• Plain text files are good to have on hand for easy cutting and pasting into online forms or emails. Review your document since any formatting will be lost so that your text is easy to read and has appropriate spacing.

Contact Information Include your name, complete address, phone and email address at the very top of your resume. You may want to include both a permanent address and school/temporary address. Think about adding professional website such as a portfolio page or a LinkedIn profile. Keep phone greeting and e-mail address professional. Resume Categories Your resume should be organized into different section or categories to enable employers to quickly find what they are looking for. Use categories that best describe the kinds of activities or skills that demonstrate what you have accomplished and allow you to highlight your individual experiences and strengths. Utilize categories that also keywords in your industry. Examples of Resume Categories Below are some general resume categories to get you started. Consider the categories that best describe you and your accomplishments. Research other industry specific keywords to best highlight your experiences. Academic Achievements Activities Accomplishments Additional Experience Athletics/Sports Awards Certifications Community Engagement Computer/Technical Skills Education Employment Experience Extracurricular Activities Highlights of Qualifications Honors/Awards Interests International Experience Internships Coursework

Language Skills Leadership Experience Military Experience Professional Development Professional Experience Professional Memberships Qualifications Related Experience Related Skills & Experience Relevant Experience Relevant Skills Research Skills Study Abroad Thesis Training Travel Experience Volunteer Experience Work Experience

Education Education is typically listed at the top or bottom of your resume. Most current and recent graduates identify education as their most significant accomplishment and want to highlight it at the top of their resume. Later on, after having more professional experiences, you may want to move it to the bottom of your resume. Identify each school in which you received a degree or certificate, the city and state and the date that you received your degree. Do not list any schools that you just took a few classes. Do not list dates of attendance, only the date in which you completed or expect to complete your degree.

Example: Education Franklin Pierce University, Rindge, NH Bachelors of Science, Management expected May 2021

Experiences This is the most important content of your resume. Make sure to include job title, name of the organization, location (city, state) and dates. You can include not only paid work experiences, but internships and volunteer experiences if they are related to the position for which you are applying. Use action statements to highlight your skills and accomplishments. Never use “I statements”. Make sure to highlight your soft skills in these descriptions.

Example:

Relief Worker, Southbridge Care Center, Keene, NH (Part-time 2015-2017) Supervised adolescents living in short-term drug rehabilitation program. Facilitated group and individual sessions. Monitored tutoring programs.

Consider variations of this category heading (Additional Experiences, Related Experiences, Work Experience) that can best organize your experiences to highlight what is most important to the reader. Highlight the most relevant and important tasks first. Within each category, your experiences are listed in reverse chronological order, i.e., the most recent first. Activities/Extracurricular/Community Service Identify the other activities that you’re involved in to highlight other interests and commitment to community and other causes that are important to you. Emphasize leadership positions or special skills that you have developed. Use these sections to highlight your other interests and experiences that showcase your broad range of characteristics that you bring to the table. Special Skills Identify any certifications, languages, industry specific technology, and unique technical skills that would set you apart from other applicants. Use a skills section to highlight specific keywords that are listed in the job description in which you are applying. However, a resume skills section is not the place to list “soft skills” such as communication, time management or customer service skills. These skills should be worked into your descriptions for your different experiences and within your cover letters.

Action Words Use action words to describe your responsibilities and accomplishments in a way that highlights your strengths and talents when describing the various tasks in each of the experiences you list on your resume. Never use “I statements”. Using bullet points and sentence fragments allow you to concisely articulate your skill set. Make sure that you mirror the language that an employer is using within the job post and on their websites. Research other industry specific keywords for which an ATS may also be looking. Objective and References upon Request Both of these categories are outdated. Using them may indicate that you are not aware of the current trends. Your cover letter will contain your objective. You will be stating in the first paragraph of your letter exactly what position for which you are applying. You can create a separate page of references with detailed notes that you can provide when it is requested. View page 14 to see samples of ways to organize your list. Highlights or Summary of Qualifications Summaries are great opportunities to showcase an extensive history of professional positions or to summarize skills for those individuals who have worked in more than one industry. They are not well suited for those just entering the field or who have recently graduated without numerous positions to summarize. General Tips and Suggestions Some things to consider:

• Be honest and factual. Keep the length to one or two pages, especially when you are a current student or recent graduate. Listing key coursework may be helpful when applying for internships.

• Always follow an employer’s instructions and don’t hesitate to contact a human resource office for clarifying directions.

When you first begin your college career, a majority of your experiences will have occurred during your high school years. As you add new jobs and experience to your resume, those high school activities and jobs may start to disappear. The same thing happens after college. Once you have graduated from Franklin Pierce, you may also start to leave those college activities or internships. Some things to consider:

• Consider leaving off your high school under the education section unless you want to demonstrate geographic connectedness to a location or the job specifically requires a high school diploma. Then just keep in simple, include the name of your school, city, state and year of graduation, but not any awards, GPA or other details.

• Consider experiences that you have been engaged in for a long period of time and you want to demonstrate a commitment to a particular discipline or passion.

• Always feel free to discuss your particular situation with a staff member in Career Services. We are here to help. Contact us to set up an appointment! The following resumes are some examples to give you ideas to build your own resumes. There are many different ways to create an easy to read and well organized resume, not just the ones that follow. Find a design and format that best market your skills and accomplishments.

What is a Cover Letter? A cover letter is a formal business letter that accompanies your resume to introduce yourself to employers. A well-crafted document allows you to explain why you are interested in the position and highlights how your skills and background specifically match the employer’s needs. Your letter should point out how your experiences meet the requirements of the position. An excellent cover letter is personalized and targeted to the employer and the specific job posting. A well written letter plays an important role in being invited for an interview. Cover letters are not required when attending a job fair and may be optional when posting your resume at online job sites. Elements of a Cover Letter

• Introduction: The first paragraph lets the employer know why you are writing. Identify the position you are applying for and how you heard of the opening. You may also want to outline why you are interested in this position or company.

• Body: This is typically one to two paragraphs in length and outlines how your skills and background meet the employer’s needs. Be specific and give examples.

• Close: The final paragraph allows you to wrap up your thoughts and thank the employer for their consideration. Close on a positive note.

This can be one of the first impressions you

make on a potential employers. What is different when applying for a full time job or an internship? When you are applying for full time position, you want to emphasize what you will do for the company. You want to identify to the employer that you have a skill set that will make you an asset. When you are applying for an internship, you also want to emphasize that you would be a good fit for their position but that you are motivated to learn from the experience. You want to speak about long term career goals to work in the same industry. Be careful about indicating that you want an internship to secure full time employment later unless the employer notes that in their description. Email Etiquette Using an introductory email instead of a printed letter or electronic copy of your letter can be used if there are not specific instructions to include a cover letter. All the same recommendations for writing a business letter still apply.

Lauren Bacall 12 Key Largo Street San Francisco, CA 94117 February 29, 2019 Noah Drake Director, Human Resources Health Hospital 123 Business Rd. Business City, NY 54321 Dear Mr. Drake, I would like to express my strong interest in the Physical Therapist (PT) position at Health Hospital as advertised on your hospital website. I am an experienced, skilled physical therapist whose passion for helping people aligns with your hospital’s mission to offer compassionate care. I know I would be an asset to your organization. I recently earned my Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from Franklin Pierce University, where I gained experience as a physical therapy intern in a variety of settings. I have experience working with a wide spectrum of clients, including pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. These internships have honed my skills in various treatments, from muscle reeducation to electrotherapy to hydrotherapy. I am, therefore, well equipped to handle the variety of patients and conditions that a physical therapist at Health Hospital would be treating. However, my skills go beyond clinical knowledge and technical ability. Both patients and advisors have praised my strong communication skills. I am able to effectively explain procedures to patients and answer any questions they have, always speaking in a patient and kindly tone. Even when I am carrying a particularly heavy caseload, I always take the time to speak with each patient, and make sure they feel comfortable and confident in their treatment plan. I have enclosed my resume for your review. I will contact you next week to see if we can speak in person about the ways in which I could benefit your hospital. Thank you so much for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Lauren Bacall

PMB 123 Franklin Pierce University 40 University Drive Rindge, NH 03461 March 1, 2018 Samuel Taylor Taylor Agency 165 Chicago Street Boston, MA 01841 Dear Mr. Taylor, Please consider me a candidate for the summer internship program at Teely Agency. I was encouraged by Susan Smith, a past intern, and John Gates, a current employee, to apply. Both speak highly of their positive experiences with the program and with the community at the Taylor Agency. I am passionate about the field of advertising and would welcome the opportunity to contribute my relevant experiences in advertising and digital marketing as well as my diverse set of skills to your dynamic agency this summer. I am excited about Taylor’s commitment to producing work that is “quirky but real”. As a copywriter intern at Hartford, CT based branding studio Holmes & Janson, I quickly learned the importance of creating a tagline that not only encapsulates the spirit of the brand but also leaves a lasting impact on the audience. I demonstrated this through my development of the slogan “all ours” for the Kernel Bread brand, which can be seen on their website and social media platforms. This unique opportunity gave me the experience and confidence to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where learning quickly, creatively and collaboratively are instrumental to success. My education at Franklin Pierce University has helped me develop written and oral communication skills needed to be successful in this position. My founding of the Students in Free Enterprise or SIFE club – is a testament to my ability to communicate effectively through the digital medium and solve problems in a creative way. Seeing the lack of student engagement at the college activities, I collaborated with museum chairs, artists, and students to create events for the public; through this endeavor, I was also able to greatly increase the internet presence for the activities via Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and press from campus publications. This endeavor proved successful, and the club has expanded greatly since then. I look forward to discussing with you the contributions I can make to your internship program. I can be reached by phone at 207-111-2333 or by email at [email protected]. I look forward to the opportunity to speak in person about my interest in the position. Sincerely, Logan Masterson
