Personal Development Planning.Your time at University is a very important one in terms of academic and personal development. Your studies will not only deepen your knowledge of Geography but will also provide you with many valuable skills which will equip you to enter the workplace or go onto further study. University also provides a wealth of opportunities for you to develop interests and learn new skills outside of your academic work.

You will already be aware of the importance of forward planning in your academic studies – setting aside time for reading, planning your revision and so on – and you are well aware of the ways in which these efforts are formally rewarded. The same principles apply with your personal as well as your academic development – it is worth taking time to consider your skills and attributes and to make plans about ways in which you can develop these in ways which will benefit you in your future employment or studies. This process is known as Personal Development Planning (PDP). Its importance is indicated by the fact that almost any area of employment which you enter (including becoming an academic yourself) will have some formal system for employees to review their performance and make future plans. At Sheffield the scheme which students must use is called Sheffield Graduate Development Planning

Sheffield Graduate Development Planning (SGDP).

In the department of Geography, SGDP is based around a series of regular meetings with your personal tutor. You will be given more details and the documentation for the scheme in Introductory lectures at the start of each year but in outline the schedule is as follows

Level 1

• Meeting in the Autumn semester to check that you are managing the transition to University OK

• Meeting in the Spring semester to review semester 1 results

Level 2

• Meeting in the Autumn semester to review semester 2 results and plans for PDP at Level 2

• Meeting in the Spring semester to review semester 1 results

Level 3

• Meeting in the Autumn semester to review semester 2 results and plans for PDP at Level 3

• Meeting in the Spring semester to review semester 1 results and post-graduation plans

Each meeting is also an opportunity to discuss your career plans and how you are developing your employability.

Skills Development.Coming to University provides many opportunities to develop new skills and to further enhance your existing ones. In addition to the skills related to your subject, your course can develop skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, negotiation and problem solving through group work, presentations, written reports and research. Your skills can also be developed through activities such as obtaining work experience, volunteering, being part of a sports team, taking on a leadership role in a student society, or organising fundraising initiatives.

Geography Graduate Skills & Attributes

A degree in geography or environmental science equips students with a breadth of knowledge and skills spanning both the social andphysicalsciences.Thisisreflectedintherange of occupations our students go into after they graduate. (www.sheffield.ac.uk/careers/students/degree/geo). The Department of Geography places a strong emphasis on building practicalexperiencethroughfieldwork, labwork and research practice. Geography students are typically actively engaged with co-curricular societies and activities, as well as enterprise and employability ventures, and it is this range of experience that attracts employers.

The Department of Geography has designed a set of seven icons to represent the main skills you will develop over the course of your degree and in your wider university life (see p10). Each category represents a broad range of skills that are typically sought after by graduate employers. These icons can also be found in the undergraduate handbook, in the module details section; each module is accompanied by three icons to represent the main skills gained.

This key is a guideline only, with the aim of encouraging you to actively reflect on the full range of skills gained during your learning.

University Support

The University offers a range of services and activities to assist you in developing skills to enhance your academic learning and employability.

• The 301 Student Skills and Development Centre provides a range of support in the form of: academic skills workshops, maths and statistics help, study skills drop-in service, dyslexia support, writing advisory service, and the ‘Languages for All’ program which enables you to learn a language not just through module choice, but alongside your degree in a more ‘informal’ manner.

• The University of Sheffield Enterprise also run a range of workshops and activities on the themes of enterprise, entrepreneurship and innovative thinking. They aim to create opportunities for you to develop your ideas whether it’s selling T-shirts to raise money for a society, organising a gig or setting up a business. These are skills that can be transferred to your studies, your future employment and your daily life.

• The University of Sheffield Careers Service offersavarietyofprogrammesand events to assist with your skills development. For more information refer to their website www.sheffield.ac.uk/careers/students/advice

More information on the range of university support & guidance is available on pages 16-17.

Work Experience Opportunities. Both the department and the University offer a wide range of exciting opportunities for you to develop valuable work skills and experience, outlined below.

Careers Service Support

The Careers Service has links with an extensive range of employers locally, nationally and internationally. You can find out more about employer events and fairs which are taking place on campus, to book an appointment for careers advice or to register for vacancy alerts via Career Connect, which you can access through your MUSE dashboard.

The Careers Service Placement Team offers bookable appointments on Monday to Thursday afternoon in the Student Jobshop at the Students’ Union. These can be booked through Career Connect.

Degree With Employment Experience

The University is keen to support students who would like to gain employment experience during their undergraduate studies, and allows the option for any student to take a one-year placement between levels 2 and 3. The placement does not have to relate directly to your degree, but it must involve undertaking work, which would be typical of a graduate level job – i.e. you couldn’t stack shelves at Tesco for a year but you could work in their head office. The experience gained during the year will clearly be valuable when applying for jobs after graduation, and indeed may lead directly to future employment in the company or organisation.

You cannot apply for this type of course through UCAS and therefore students are encouraged to apply to participate in the DEE scheme in year 2.

Following the successful completion of the placement, graduation students will be awarded an amended degree title to reflect their additional experience e.g. BSc (Hons) Geography with Employment Experience.

The responsibility for finding a placement rests with the student, although the Careers Service can assist with this. Placements must be approved by the department, who will also provide support and monitor progress. If you are interested the University has a dedicated website: www.sheffield.ac.uk/placements which gives more details. The Geography Department are running dedicated sessions and in-house advice on placements (see page 20)

Royal Geographical Society (RGS) Ambassador Scheme

Through this scheme, you have the opportunity to become a role model and ambassador to school pupils, through introducing them to the benefits of studying geography and encouraging them to pursue the subject not only beyond the compulsory stages, but also into higher education and employment. Through a range of fun, interactive and informative sessions, you can demonstrate the specific and transferable skills you have developed as a geographer. You will attend a three-hour training session run by the RGS, held in the Department of Geography, before starting to volunteer on the scheme. The training session is fun, interactive and aims to equip you with everything you need to feel confident for your first visit.

Page 13: Careers & Employability. - University of Sheffield · 2016-10-17 · Employability Pathway. The Department of Geography has structured our skills and careers support to complement

Sheffield Geography students regularly participate in this scheme. It is an opportunity to develop your presentation and interpersonal skills, and the scheme can be accredited through HEAR (see page 14).

Further information on the scheme can be found here: bit.ly/srX2w0

The Training will take place in semester 2 (date to be advised). In order to attend you must apply by contacting Simon Faulkner at RGS ([email protected]). Do not apply to the department and please don’t just turn up on the day.

Geographical Assocation (GA) Internship

Each year we run a competition for a four week internship with the Geographical Association (GA). The winner is then chosen by the GA chief executive through an essay competition.

Ernst & Young Scholarship

Two scholarships are available annually to Level 1 students from the schools of Geography, Chemistry or History, as part of a prestigious scheme designed by Ernst & Young specifically for Sheffield students. These provide a number of training opportunities over the second and third years of undergraduate study, including:

• A place on the Ernst & Young Leadership Academy programme

• Employment as an Ernst & Young Brand Ambassador

• A Summer internship or year-long placement

Each scholarship-winner also receives typically a £1000 bursary in each year of the scholarship. The application deadline for 2017/18 scholarships will be announced in the autumn.

SIIDshare

SIDshare is a student run enterprise that operates as an NGO embedded within SIID (Sheffield Institute for International Development). SIIDshare is open to students from all disciplines and levels of study. Its aim is to promote engagement and partnership through knowledge exchange. You can get involved with SIIDshare in a number of ways:

• Join the committee: Committee members are elected for one academic year and represent SIIDshare within the University and through liaison with external partners. Committee members play an active role in planning and implementing various international development activities.

• Do fundraising: Each year, SIIDshare organises charitable fundraising activities for particular NGO partners or their projects. These fundraising activities take place over a discrete time period and students sign up to commit to the activity for the duration.

• Join a project challenge team: Students will work on an international development ‘challenge’, a real project, nominated by the NGO (a problem that needs solving) that may involve a number of interventions and involve the students thinking strategically about how to address the challenge e.g. grant-making, M&E,fundraising, advocacy, fieldwork.

• Volunteer with an NGO: SIIDshare has negotiated partnerships with a number of NGOs/third Sector organisations both within the city region and overseas. Students sign up through SIIDshare and gain valuable experience of working with partners and communities outside the University.

Oncampus Placements

These are project-based, paid 100 hour placements that students can undertake with a university department or faculty during their study. The range of placements cover both non-vocational and degree-specific projects, such as market research, data analysis, research, social media strategy, product development, and events management. Placements are advertised through the MyVacancies system throughout the academic year.

Sheffield Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to boost your CV and can be the best way to bring your degree to life and gain that hands on experience you might need for employment. There are over 200 opportunities to volunteer through Sheffield Volunteering, and you can gain recognition for your effort through HEAR and the Sheffield Graduate Award.

For an idea of the range of activities and how to get involved visit: su.sheffield.ac.uk/sheffield-volunteering

Recognition Of PDP.The university provides a number of ways in which you can formally record and receive recognition for things which you do outside of your formal studies which contribute to your development as a Sheffield Graduate.

Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR)

The HEAR will provide a comprehensive record of students’ university achievements.

You will be issued with your HEAR alongside your degree certificate. As well as including your degree classification, an overview of your qualification and a list of your modules and grades, the HEAR will include more detailed information about your chosen course. It will also give details of non-academic achievements that the university or the Students’ Union can verify, to provide you with a broad picture of your university achievements. These might include additional modules you have taken (e.g. a language course), awards such as the Sheffield Graduate Award or Skills for Work Certificate, and other extra-curricular activities such as volunteering or mentoring.

You can view your HEAR (via My Services in MUSE) as it grows during your time at

Page 15: Careers & Employability. - University of Sheffield · 2016-10-17 · Employability Pathway. The Department of Geography has structured our skills and careers support to complement

– Department of Geography

Sheffield. You can use it as support for the Sheffield Graduate Development Programme, by providing a basis for reviewing your progress and thinking about your personal development. You are also encouraged to refer to your HEAR in discussions with your personal tutor and the Careers Service, to help you identify and articulate the skills you are gaining, and reflect on how you can build on these to achieve your future goals.

Before graduation you will also be issued with official ‘snapshots’ of your HEAR via a new secure online system (the ShaRe Service, Sheffield Authorised Records, (www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/record/share) three times per year (around Easter, graduation week and intro week). You can share this with employers and others to provide evidence of your university achievements as you begin to apply for internships, jobs or further study. You are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to gain recognition for activities you undertake outside the curriculum. This will help you demonstrate how you have made the most of your time at university, and gained valuable skills and experience that will enhance your employability and help you achieve your potential.

When you complete your course your HEAR will be finalised, and be issued as an Exit HEAR (PDF format) via ShARe. You will continue to have access to ShARe after graduation, and you will be able to use ShARe to give other people (e.g. employers/postgraduate admissions tutors) permission to view your HEAR as well, so that you can use your HEAR as official evidence of your university learning and experience.

A list of verifiable activities can be found here: www.sheffield.ac.uk/hear-search/. Most are verified centrally (including open day ambassadors), with the exception of The Geographical Association Ambassador Scheme, and the GeogSoc ‘Intern’ competition, which are verified by the Geography Department.

For more information about the HEAR, visit www.sheffield.ac.uk/hear

This session, run by the Careers Centre especially for Geography students, will look at ways which you can gain work experience, either through working alongside your degree, vacation internships/work experience, and through the Degree with Employment Experience. The session will look at how to find placements, the application process, and the benefits of placements. Geography students will talk about their experience of work placements. This session is aimed at students from all levels.

In semester 1, and semester 2, fortnightly appointments will be available with the placements officer in the Geography building (dates and room to be advised). Appointments can also be booked for every day at the careers centre.

Further events on maximising the learning/benefit of work experience and volunteering, and preparing to apply for placements, are planned for semester 2.

University-Wide Careers Events.Fairs

Students who prepare in advance for fairs can really stand out with employers. In fact, in the last few years several students have managed to secure themselves a position at a fair.

• The Engineering Graduate Recruitment & Placement Fair 18 October 2016

• The Law Fair 19 October 2016

Networking Events

Networking events bring together 6-8 employers from a relevant industry, providing each organisation with the opportunity to deliver a short pitch to students before a networking reception. The expected audience for these events can be much higher than an individual presentation and they can be particularly effective for smaller or less well-known organisations - the short pitches allowing students to gain information that they take into the networking element of the event.

Presentations And One To Ones

Presentations allow you to find out about a company, their employment opportunities and their recruitment process. One-to-ones are an opportunity for you to have an informal discussion with an employer and to ask any questions you may have about their opportunities or your own situation.
