GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE LAW FAIRDid you know that most law firms recruit approximately 50% law and 50% non law students?Come along to our Law Fair to meet with a range of legal employers and training providers to gain an insight into their graduate opportunities and work experience programmes.

Do

• Prepare – research the law firms and law course providers attending, identify who you would like to target and come up with relevant questions for them.

• Talk to representatives – They are an invaluable source of information to you, they are here to recruit Durham students and are interested in the skills that you have to offer.

• Think about what is important for you to know from the employers, are you looking to target firms that sponsor further study, offer international placements or have family friendly policies?

• Learn from others – many people on the stands will be Durham alumni now working as Trainees, find out what they did during their time here that helped them stand out from the crowd.

• Clarify anything that you are unsure of – What Is commercial awareness for them? How can you begin to develop this skill?

• Bring a notebook, make a note of the contacts you spoke to and any information that you were given, this will be very helpful later when completing applications.

Don’t

• Just pick up free giveaways and literature from the stand, speaking to representatives can really help to give you the inside information that will prove invaluable in your applications.

• Walk away if someone else is talking to your targeted employer, they might be asking questions that you had never thought of, or also need the answers to.

Top tips

• Attend the “preparing for the Law Fair” careers talk, to make sure that you make the most of the Law Fair.

• Careers Advisers will be on hand at the fair, speak to an Adviser if you are not sure about your career path, relevant timelines or would like a quick CV check.

• Remember that employers take note of students who make a good impression, think of relevant questions and show motivation and enthusiasm.

• Work out your own legal timeline – are you thinking about taking a gap year or further study? Make sure you know how this changes your application timeline.

• Reflect on your knowledge gained – which firms offer the seats you are interested in? Do you want a regional or international firm? Do you want to be in a small intake of students or a larger group? This will be vital information in helping you identify who to target for applications later.
