The UCLan Careers Fairs offer you a ‘one-off’ opportunity to meet lots of employers and other organisations offering all kinds of graduate jobs andwork experience.

By attending the three Fairs you will be able to...

• Browse the most up-to-date A-Z list of employers and recruitment companies who will be attending over the three days

• Make a list of all the organisations you are interested in and research their products and services

To get the most out of your time at the Careers Fairs...

• Bring along several printed copies of your CV to hand out to employers

• Dress to impress – show employers that you are professional and serious about your future career

• Network. Don’t limit your interactions to exhibitors. Talk to the Careers Team and other jobseekers at the events to hear about different employers, possible job openings and more

After you have attended the Careers Fairs...

• Follow up with anyone you talked to at the Fairs with an email within 24 hours. Asking for business cards makes this a lot easier

• After the Fairs consider connecting with recruiters through LinkedIn.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THE CAREERS FAIRS


It’s a good idea to get your CV ready before the Fairs so that you can hand itto the employers you meet over the three days.

Here are a few handy tips on making your CV stand out from the rest...

• Use 2 sides of A4 in a clear font, preferably 11pt or 12pt in size

• Put relevant information or key selling points on the first page

• When writing about your education and employment, adopt a positive style, highlighting the learning and skills you have developed

• Allocate space according to the importance of the information (expand on relevant experience or skills, not the ones you have had the longest)

• Use underlining or bold for emphasis and space information evenly over two pages

• Ask someone to proofread your CV – they might catch something you’ve missed.

Here are a few things to avoid...

• Large blocks of text. Break up the text using bullet points instead

• Spelling or grammatical errors. Check, double-check and triple-check!

• Leaving long gaps in your ‘Career history’ section. Try to account for any gaps by using phrases like “Six months’ work and travel in South America” or “Career break and full-time parent between 2002 – 2006”

• Personal information such as your date of birth, ethnicity or marital status

• Attaching photographs. Don’t include one unless you are asked to.
