Head in the clouds: Careers in Weather,

Climate and Atmospheric Science

The BIG challenges in Weather and Climate

• How good can weather forecasts be?• Can we make accurate seasonal forecasts?• How best can extra computing power be used?• Can we predict flash floods?• How are people best warned about extreme weather?• How will our climate change?• Who will this affect negatively?• How much will sea levels rise?• What will happen to the major ice sheets?• Can we safely engineer the climate?

“Suppose you went to your careers advisor in

Year 10, what would you have wanted them

to tell you?”

Summary

• There’s much more to meteorology than weather forecasting• Outside of schools, it is generally seen as a science rather than part of geography• Many, mostly small employers but skills are widely applicable• Big global problems = global workforce
