adventure. These sentences spark mission. Always have. Always will. First spoken on 30th May 1792 in a sermon by William Carey on Isaiah 54:2-3 they have resounded down the decades and across the time zones wherever mission is a priority. These sentences nurture vision. God-focused vision. It is a wonderful order. The expecting comes before the attempting, the ‘from’ before the ‘for’. Confi dence in God lays the foundation for obedience to God.

In these pages you will fi nd a college that takes seriously its role within the mission of God. We’d love to be able to assist you to fi nd your place in that mission as well.

The quality of that leadership is dependent largely on the character of those contexts in which such leaders are shaped and formed.

Carey is one such context. We are confi dent about the strategic role we play in the mission of God. As we fulfi l this role we are ignited by those twin sentences so often sourced to our namesake, William Carey:

“Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God.”

These sentences breathe passion. There is a boldness here. An excitement. While they inspire, they speak also of ‘great things’ to which to aspire. Life and service becomes an

WelcomeThere is a simple logic behind the existence of Carey Baptist College.

The mission of God in our world is dependent largely on the health of the people of God. The health of the people of God is dependent largely on the quality of the leadership among God’s people.

Ponder this

“While Carey belongs to the Baptist Churches of New Zealand, we are a contribution by those churches to the wider people of God. We welcome the fact that 40% of our students come from beyond the Baptist community.

While Carey has gained a reputation for being a research-led academic institution of quality, we direct this excellence towards an applied learning which resources the people of God for mission. We welcome the fact that so many students are choosing Carey because of this reality.

While Carey has been about training pastors for most of our history, we now provide training for the rest of God’s people as well. We welcome

the fact that 40% of our graduates utilise their Carey training in other vocations.

While Carey has expected students to come to its campus for most of our history, we have invested in distance education which takes our training to the students. We welcome the fact that 40% of our students choose to train in this way.”

We are delighted to offer you a glimpse of Carey through our Prospectus.

Carey’s Mission Carey’s ValuesWhen it comes to our purpose as a learning community we express it like this:Because God matters to us, and because the world matters to Him and because He wants His people impacting that world.

Carey exists to train people for the Church and for the marketplace so as to enable them to serve and think and lead in a way that advances God’s mission in the world.

EVANGELICAL IN OUR IDENTITYWe are founded on the Word of God. The living word (Jesus) is our focus and the written word (the Bible) is our basis. Because of this, our learning together is done within the liberating constraints of the lordship of Christ and the authority of the Bible.

EXCELLENT IN OUR PERFORMANCEWe aim to be the best we can be. All of us, in all that we do, are continually stretching beyond mediocrity.

INTEGRATED IN OUR PRACTICEWe are committed to being an honest, transparent and accountable community. Authentic Christian character is a priority. Plus, we are committed to developing fully integrated people. The gaps between our heads and our hearts and our hands will be small.

INNOVATIVE WITH OUR DEVELOPMENTWe recognise that while convictions need to change, techniques must. We will be at the cutting edge, being creative and courageous in the way we learn together. We are continually prepared to take risks.

Page 5: Carey Prospectus

ACCESSIBLE TO OUR CONSTITUENCYWe celebrate diversity. We want to be inclusive. People’s age, gender, ethnicity or geographical location is not a barrier to belonging to this community. Neither is their denomination because, while we belong to the Baptist churches, we are also a contribution of those churches to the wider church.

RELATIONAL IN OUR APPROACHWe value harmony within the community. We aim at a relational leadership that empowers staff and students alike to be part

of the direction of Carey. While we pursue our mission with passion, we reject unnecessary competition and will develop cooperative, strategic networks with agencies beyond Carey.

Testimonials

Carey aims to provide fl exible learning experiences for a diverse range of people and this diversity contributes to the richness of the college. In their own words, our students share of how the Carey experience has impacted and is resourcing them for the future.

ANDREW BALDWIN

Carey is helping me to refl ect on, articulate and defend my core convictions as well as helping me to appreciate others points of views. But it isn’t just about cramming your head full of information. I really like Carey’s well-rounded approach to training – meaning I’m always thinking about how that which I’m learning applies to my own personal development, my ministry in the local church and the church’s interaction with society. I can’t recommend it enough to those who are serious about training for mission or ministry. Carey is a great place to study.

EMILY CHENCarey’s training helps me to serve the Kingdom of God more effectively, to know God more clearly, and tobe spiritually healthier. Carey provides a priceless opportunity for me totackle culture boundaries, and reclaim the balanced ways towards Christian

ministry. Now I am more confi dent in connecting with different peoples. This is enormous grace from the Lord.

PETER BENZIEPractical experience and to gain theological knowledge – the two reasons I chose to study at Carey Baptist College. Called into pastoral ministry later in life, I needed a college which taught and challenged me theologically and which allowed me the time to minister in my local community. I found that at Carey, and I also found a faculty and students who truly care for each other. I’m now doing post-graduate study through the Laidlaw-Carey Graduate School – another opportunity offered by Carey.

JOY HOOKER

I began study at Carey as a part-time distance student and am now fi nishing my degree full-time and on-site. I have found both lecturers and staff very approachable, helpful and encouraging. The lectures and associated assignments have challenged and broadened my understanding of God, the Bible and what it means to be a Christian leader. Carey’s well earned reputation has been proven to me and it is a great place to study.

LAURA GIDDEY

I started my journey at Carey with Intermission then cross credited into the Bachelor of Applied Theology, while also studying for the Diploma of Pastoral Leadership. Carey Baptist College has been foundational not only to my academic learning but also to my personal faith. The college community has become a second family for me and I really appreciate the time and energy the lecturers provide in classes, over lunch chats and in meetings. Carey provides a safe, entertaining and stimulating environment where you can be personally challenged. I enjoy my study and the interaction with staff, friends and peers.

ROB STACEY

Carey’s Pastoral Leadership track and applied theology degree bring together a remarkable mix of academic and practical training. The summer assignments and service in local churches add a unique and valuable “on the Job application” dimension to your training. Carey’s commitment to application as well as academic accomplishment made my choice of college a very simple one.

GARY MAUGAStudying at Carey Baptist College has been a blessing to me in many different ways. The amazing support of both the staff and the students enhance the spirit of community one will experience while at Carey. As well as the spiritual feeding, I also enjoy the physical feeding (Tuesday and Wednesday community lunches). Studying at Carey has placed me in a better position to “seek fi rst the kingdom of God”.

careymedia

careymedia is part of Carey’s commitment to resource local churches. It’s an inexpensive and accessible New Zealand made resource designed to bring training into the church and home for individuals or small groups. The available range of DVDs is shown here.

Carey StaffFilmed during weekly Community Worship at Carey, these DVDs are ideal for small groups or similar contexts. Each one consists of 8-10 messages of 15-25 minutes which explore biblical passages on a theme (Mission, Leadership, Church, Sermon on the Mount, Spirit and Gospel) taking note of the 1st century context of ‘then’ and applying the message to 21st century life ‘now’. Discussion guides are included with a few questions for each session written by the speaker to help prompt discussion.

Visiting SpeakersCarey enjoys partnership with others and from time to time hosts overseas guests who may teach block courses and run seminars. Three of these day-long seminars have been fi lmed for use by the wider church community. In sessions of 30-60 minutes these make an ideal teaching resource for small or large groups.

New titles are added each year.
