Grant Overview & Goal Dual capacity-building approach seeking to

increase cultural sensitivity and awareness of implicit bias toward black children in educational setting

1. Establish a foundation for social trust among our black community and educational systems, where cultural competence is prioritized: institutionally, personally and instructionally.

2. Engage and empower caregivers of black children through a culturally responsive framework

Why is this important?

Kidsdata.org approx. 3% of Merced County children = African American/Black 2.4% are multi-racial (and racial breakdown is unknown)

California’s San Joaquin Valley: A Region and its Children under Stress (January 2017) 1 in 3 families with children under 18 have incomes below the FPL Poverty rates are even higher for children of color Approximately 57% of black children under age 6 live in poverty
