Module outline The module introduced students to three key aspects of Barbados’ agricultural heritage the sugar story, plantations, planters/labourers, and the non-sugar heritage. The module examined the historical and contemporary issues regarding this heritage, with particular emphasis on how students can use text, documentaries and other media to provide refreshing analyses for public consumption. Two field trips allowed them to experience the heritage first-hard and discuss issues with the lecturer. Assignments Give reasoned responses to the following questions. Each answer should be no more than one page. 1. Choose a topic on Barbados’ agricultural heritage for a 30- minute documentary. Outline the main content areas to be covered in the documentary. 2. How can the old Bulkeley Sugar Factory be used for heritage tourism or other purposes? 3. Design a plan for the development of the Newton Burial Ground. Practical activities 1. Visit to Quaw’s quest, the site of a plantation in the 1830s. Students were able to discuss the plantation labourers who worked on the site during slavery. 2. Tour of Bulkeley Sugar factory, Newton Slave Burial Ground, St. George’s Valley, and Codrington College. Students took photographs and made notes on aspects of the agricultural heritage. Results GOALS Understand the various dimensions of the island’s agricultural heritage. Develop strategies for the ‘exploitation’ and development of this heritage. Links to other modules Technical aspects of documentary production. Students were exposed to content areas of the agricultural heritage which could be used for the development of documentaries, a theme taught in other modules.
