Dear Families and Friends of Carl Sandburg High School:

With the completion of our August 27th Back-to-School Night, Sandburg students, staff, and parents have officially transitioned into the new school year. The Back-to-SchoolNight was an exciting opportunity for our families to connect with school staff to ensure a productive and successful partnership on behalf of students. As a school community,Sandburg is privileged to have so many families and parents interested and invested intheir students’ educational programs. We would like to thank all who participated in thisannual event. We look forward to the next collaborative opportunity with our families, whichis our fall Parent-Teacher Conferences scheduled for October 17th. Additional informationregarding Parent-Teacher Conferences can be found elsewhere in this newsletter.

The past several weeks of school have been very busy in terms of our newly implementedPeriod 1C for advisories, intervention, and enrichment activities. The month of August was spent focusing upon laying the foundation for advisory curriculum. As we entered the month of September, we expanded our 1C resources to include two days per week of intervention and enrichment opportunities for all students. Throughout this month, students have participated in advisory classes on Mondays and Fridays and been providedintervention and enrichment opportunities on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students are ableto schedule intervention and enrichment time with their teachers by accessing the WCOnline scheduling link located under the “Students” tab at the top of the Sandburg websitehomepage (http://sandburg.d230.org/students/). Advisory and intervention/enrichmentsupports are an important avenue for staff and students to collaboratively work towardscontinual student achievement and social/emotional growth as outlined within our D230 Successful Schools – Successful Students (S4) Touchstone.

The LaGrange Road construction project has continued as land which was previously apart of our school campus has been cleared to make way for road expansion. School anddistrict administration have been working closely with village and IDOT officials in termsof communication and preparedness as the project ensues. Part of this preparation hasincluded a rerouting of before/after school traffic at our LaGrange road entrance, as wellas additional crossing guards at the 133rd street stoplight.

As we enter our mid-semester point, I encourage parents and families to continue accessing information via the Sandburg and D230 websites, the Skyward Family Accessportal, and Connect 230. When accessing the new Sandburg website, we encourage parents and students to view the Deans’ podcast, located under the “Recent Media” link. The podcast, entitled “Deans Top 10 Rules and Guidelines” provides an excellent summaryof student expectations to ensure success. Our parent organizations, Athletic Boosters,Music Boosters, and the Parent, Faculty, Student Association, provide another greatavenue of communication and school involvement.

In line with our mission of collaboration and community involvement, I am always available for questions, comments, and suggestions at [email protected].

Go Eagles!

Go Eagles!
