It was Carla’s tenth birthday and her mother gave hera gift.

Carla’s mother had baked her favorite dessert, cookies. For each year of her age she received two cookies.

Can you figure out how many cookies her mother gave her for her birthday?

Do you think that Carla received TEN cookies?

FIFTEEN cookies?

TWENTY cookies?

If you said TWENTY you’re correct!

First, we know that Carla is turning ten, so we need to make ten circles.

Add two cookies to every circle since Carla is ten.

Add all of the cookies. Carla received twenty cookies for her birthday.

This is called repeated addition.

This is also multiplication: 2 x 10 = 20.

Carla wants to share her cookies with her mother.

She puts her cookies into two groups, one for herself and one for her mother.
