Fall 2013 | This boutique hotel was based on my class’ travels through Europe. We stayed at several small hotels. This one, located in downtown Cincinnati, features a small retail space, three event spaces, and a rooftop bar. The exterior is a layered glass and concrete curtain wall. The undulating surfaces were inspired by several Gaudi buildings I was able to visit in Barcelona.

Fall 2011 | This literary center was the first full building I created. It was designed around electronic media and an artist apartment. The first two floors hold an artist gallery, shelving for books and electronics, and reading rooms. The third floor would house a visiting artist or lecturer for the university. The exterior trees follow the interior column grid and relate in color. The connection between the exterior and interior is magnified by the windows on the south and east.

I chose these buildings for their mix of curved shape and vertical elevations. It gives the buildings a very layered and extruded look that I want in my building

I love the horizontal element to this building. The slats offer shading as well as the atheistical element.

This meshes the curve with vertical and horizontal elements. It creates a grid that speaks well to a curved building. A type of grid similar to this would be ideal for part of my building since I use so many curves in the facade.

As technology continues to advance the way information is gathered needs to change also. The Media Literary Center will provide the community with updated tools and a gathering place. The center will house iPads and MacBooks for interactive reading material, as well as some significant texts. It will also offer a place for exhibitions, book readings, and community events. A small upstairs apartment will allow the center to house a visiting artist to teach classes or present work. Supplying a place to gather and grow, the center will become an important portion of the Clifton neighborhood.

The design for the reading rooms comes from the desire for ambient lighting. Like the north-east corner of University Pavilion, the reading rooms will receive some direct light in the mornings. To combat glare and heat gain, a row of maple trees will line the side. However, in the winter they will lose their leaves warming up the reading rooms early in the day. During most of the hours of use there will be ambient lighting in the space.

Water management is key because of the sloped site. As rain falls on the sloped roof (1), it will flow to the valley and down the slope on the south facade. It will collect in a shallow pool (2) and the overflow will be collected in a water retention tank (3). Untreated water (4) will be slowly released into the sewer system (5) to prevent storm surge. Treated rain water (6) will be pressurized (7) and filtered (8) before being used as gray water for irrigation and sewage purposes. A valve for domestic potable water (9) will run into the treated rain water tank to provide water during dry times. The location for the valve negates the need for double plumbing. Side walks made of porous concrete (10) will allow for water drainage into the site and create less run off.

The water management for this urban site was very important. I designed a system to collect rain in a shallow pool and overflow will be collected in a water retention tank. Untreated water will be slowly released into the sewer system to prevent storm surge. Treated rain water will be pressurized and filtered before being used as gray water for irrigation and sewage. Porous sidewalks would allow for added drainage.5

Spring 2012 | This was a competition piece that I worked on with two other AIAS members. It was focused on the infill of blacktop around Cincinnati. We created a park space that would also serve as a community center.

Winter 2012 | This studio was about exploring line, plane, and mass. I first studied a church and expressed it in drawings and model form. I then created several miniature study models of the site to asses the different elements each building possessed. The finial model was a cumulative section that evolved over the entire quarter. This project was designed around a culinary institute. I used wrapping planes to signify the important spaces: the kitchens, the auditorium, the restaurant.

Summer 2013 | Military operations often require large spaces in which to hold collaborative meetings. I was part of a small group who was asked to provide such a space for an existing weapons creating facility. The space was taken through exterior schematic design phases. The goal was to create a large meeting room with breakout spaces that would fit within the existing building layout. The location of the space was particularly important because it needed to be accessible by those who do not have the highest security clearance.

Spring 2012 | This computer based class taught us how to use multiple programs to create and test various forms. This installation project would dampen sound in a very large space. Creation of ShapeThe shape comes from the animation of a rectangular board. It was changed several times to eliminate any loops and to increase the decay of sound.Sections for AssemblyThe cloud is made of 4 identical pieces in alternating orientations. It will be made using a waffle section that will be wrapped in a sound dampening material.SuspensionWith all 4 pieces it covers 2 structural bays in the Niehoff Studio. It will contain a few aluminum ribs to which hooks will be attached. The pieces will be suspended by wire from the beams.
