Term 1 - Week 5 Thursday 23 February 2017

Dear Parents and Carers

It was wonderful to see many parents at our Meet the Language Teacher sessions on Monday morning. Thank you to all the parents and family members who were able to attend these information sessions as well as our special morning tea. Thank you to all who brought in a delicious plate of food to share. If you were unable to attend the Meet the Language Teacher sessions and would like to meet and discuss any questions or issues with the language teachers, you are invited to make an appointment at the front office. It is also extremely pleasing to see such a large number of parents attending workshops coordinated by the teachers. I’m sure that you all appreciate the huge number of extra hours the teachers work to meet the needs of our active school community.

Reminders Road Safety: It is very important to please use the pedestrian crossings when walking across the road before and after

school. Our school is a very busy place during these peak times and it would be a tragedy to have one of our students or parents seriously hurt because they have been reckless and unsafe.

Zone Swimming Carnival this Friday 24 February

Toilets: Parents are reminded to use the adult toilets located next to the school library, located upstairs in administration building. Please do not use the toilets which are designated for student use only.

Congratulations

And a big thank you to all the Year 6 Students who have done an outstanding job as caring buddies for the new kindergarten children in the first four weeks of school. They all celebrated with a pizza party last Friday to end the program for the term but many are still connecting every day to help their new friends adjust to school well. Communication (Repeat Item)

The school newsletter sent through the App and school website will continue to be the main form of communication with the

school. Additionally, we have the electronic board within the school plus a constant stream of notes being sent home regularly.

Leave I will be taking a short period of leave from the end of this week until Friday 7 April. Mrs Mateski will be relieving Principal in this period. Mrs Farag will relieve as Deputy Principal and Mrs Milner will relieve as Assistant Principal.

Regards Stephen Vrachas Principal

P&C News

Second Hand Uniform Shop The Second Hand Uniform Shop will be held on Friday 3 March. Please make any donations of 2nd hand uniforms to the front

office before the day. Please ensure all donations are official school wear, still in reasonably good condition.

If anyone would like to help with selling second hand clothes at the shop, please contact the P & C via email on [email protected]

Class Parents Just a last reminder to register for the class parent program by filling in the form which was sent home recently. The hope is to have an open communication channel with the other parents in your child’s class; to ask questions; to organise whole class get-togethers; and to promote friendship amongst the children and their parents within the class.

P&C meetings This is a reminder that this year we have changed the schedule to avoid conflicts with school holidays. P&C meetings are held on TUESDAY in the 3RD AND 7TH WEEK OF EACH TERM.

Next P&C meeting – AGM The next meeting will be on 7 March at 7:30pm in the Staffroom. It will be the Annual General Meeting (AGM). In this meeting all executive positions will be up for re-election. I invite all Carlton Parents to consider standing for one of the positions. The job doesn't take too much time from a busy work week, but I personally, find closer involvement with my children's school very rewarding. These roles take much time each month. However, we can't run the P&C without them. Please consider standing. We would love to see you all at the meeting. If you have any suggestions or questions and are unable to make it, please contact the P&C via email on: [email protected].

Richard Jones – P&C President

News from the Macedonian Language Class

International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic

and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

On 21 February, 2017, students from Macedonian Language classes celebrated International Mother Tongue Day in line with the

UNESCO theme “Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education”. To foster sustainable development, learners

must have access to education in their mother tongue and in other languages. It is through the mastery of the first language or

mother tongue that the basic skills of reading, writing and numeracy are acquired.

Multilingual education facilitates access to education while promoting equity for populations: -It emphasizes the quality of teaching and learning with a focus on understanding and creativity; -It reinforces the cognitive aspect of learning by ensuring the direct application of learning outcomes to the learner’s life through the mother tongue; -It enhances dialogue and interaction between learner and teacher by allowing genuine communication from the beginning; -It facilitates participation and action in society and gives access to new knowledge and cultural expressions; -Multilingualism is an asset for learning how we can continue to live harmoniously together.
