NAPLAN TESTING Parents with students in Years 3 & 5 will receive a brochure
about the NAPLAN testing today. Please read this carefully
and talk to the class teacher or Mrs Taylor if you have any
questions.
We encourage all students in Years 3 & 5 to complete the
tests. Whilst these tests only give a single snapshot of a
child’s progress, when these results are put together with
various other standardised tests and classwork results, they
do create a bigger picture.
A couple of people have indicated a desire for their child not
to participate in the testing programme for a variety of rea-
sons. Please note that if you wish to withdraw your student
from testing you must complete an application to do so from
the office.

Mark Twain Watching our children come and go from swimming les-
sons reminds me of the simple things that make us happy,
and how we learn just by living. Mark Twain, author and
humourist, wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its
sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain once
said this about the Bible: "I have no problem with those
parts of the Bible I don't understand. It's those parts of the
Bible I do understand that gives me fits." And also, "Faith is
believing what you know ain't so." Mark, raised a
Presbyterian, turned his mistakes into opportunities and
with the help of good friends lived an amazing life and
benefited many others. I believe Carmel is a great
environment to begin an amazing life.
Bible Studies Bible classes for the upper grades (Yrs 4-6) will be starting
shortly. These studies endeavour to discover possibilities
and opportunities, to see the positives of life and the joy of
living.
Chapel Please note that we have our weekly Chapel and Assembly
program every Friday morning from 8.50am to 9.30am. All

drop your receipt in the box marked ‘Carmel Primary’ out

much this adds up to.

fice. We have found a pair of children’s reading glasses (red

PARENT INFO NIGHT 6.30-7.30pm Next Tuesday we will be hosting an information night for ALL parents. The night will involve class teachers giving a quick
rundown of homework expectations, what is recommended and expected in class. There will also be a Q & A time. Pam will
also be discussing Lexile reading in the Library. There will be 2 Sessions run so that if you have 2 students you will get the
opportunity to spend time in each class. If you have more than 2 students attending this school, you will need to make a
separate appointment with the teacher/s that you don’t get to see. Please plan on coming to this important event.
P&F SHORT MEETING 7.30-8pm Following the Parent Info night, there will be a very brief P&F meeting where a few urgent matters will be addressed and future
meeting times set for the coming months. The P&F Committee is for any parents who are interested in having an input into
the operations and running of our school. We happily welcome any new members.

QUALITY ADVENTIST SCHOOLS FRAMEWORK In 2012 Carmel Primary began a journey that has been quite challenging in respect to time demands, but very rewarding in
terms of the information we have been able to glean from the process. Carmel Primary has been one of the first schools to
work through the Quality Adventist Schools Framework process. While 2012 was largely spent refining the document and in
staff training, the real work started in mid 2013 when the final document was published and distributed to schools. Since then
small teams within the school have started through the journey of working through various components of the Framework.
Our Aim:
To use the framework for schools to self-evaluate and by doing this build a culture of improvement and excellence to ensure
that Carmel Primary is a quality, sustainable school.
The QAS Framework will:
Provide direction for school organisation & direction, develop a culture of ‘Professional Conversations’, focus on improving
student outcomes, describe excellence/best practice, identify areas for improvement, empower school leadership, be evidence
based and recognise success.
I have listed the various components to be reviewed. This whole process takes three or four years and then starts again. It is
flexible and some areas will be revisited many times while others may only be reviewed once in that time period.
Late last year our system Education Director, Di Hillsdon and Business Manager, Stacey Kendall, along with a couple of other
administration staff from Head Office, met with staff from the Department of Education Services and also representatives from
the Association of Independent Schools to show them the tool and get feedback as to how well it met the requirements of the
National Quality Schools tool which is gradually being rolled out across Australia. They were extremely impressed at the
professional document and even more in the wide scope and depth of work involved in the School Improvement Tool. The
conclusion of both bodies was that our document was more comprehensive than the National Quality Schools process and we
would exceed government requirements by using this tool.
This year, the staff at Carmel are already involved in reviewing some new components. One of the important things we need
to do is collect data from parents about various aspects of the school programme. Normally we could use information
gathered from the Online Parent Survey rather than send out numerous smaller surveys on various issues, however in 2013 we
had a VERY SMALL number of parents actually complete the online survey which means that we have a very limited amount of
data to work with. Due to the limited response to the survey, we need to send out a paper based survey in the next week or
two and would very much appreciate your input so that we can make informed decisions about School Improvements,
knowing that we have enough data to give valid results. We really value your feedback and take both commendations and
recommendations seriously when planning for the future. We plan to use a slightly shorter survey tool and hope that this will
tempt you to take the time to do it.
I thank you in anticipation of a big response to the survey!

Boys Shirts There have been a few teething problems with new boys school shirts. In many respects they are excellent. It seems some
people have had to buy a larger size for their boys than they would normally buy to accommodate the neck. After some
negotiation with the company they have agreed that the collar style is possibly not the best for active students and they have
offered to take off the collar and put on a new style that sits a little lower and is more comfortable to wear.
If you bought a new boys shirt and found the neck a little too tight for a tie – please bring it back to the office, clearly labelled
and we will send it in to the company who produced them to alter the collar.
It is important the collar fits well as the shirt is worn with a tie during Term 2 and 3. When the collar fits well the length of the
shirt should also be well proportioned. Please ensure that the length of the shirt purchased sits approximately mid-way down
the shorts when worn. If an oversized shirt is worn, students will be required to wear it tucked in. If you are unsure about
how it is meant to be worn, please check at the uniform shop with Mrs Hutchinson before you purchase.
Girls shirts These shirts are not yet available in the smaller sizes. We have had some samples for fitting purposes and they are almost
right - a small adjustment to the collar and they will be ready to go into full production.
Once the final adjustments are made a sample of each size will be held at the Primary School Office for a few weeks to allow
you to check sizes. The shaped shirts with logo look very nice on.
2014 is the change-over year. Please note that as of the start of school 2015 the new shirts must be worn by all students.
