    Curriculum

    Carnegie Mellon Universitys MSPPM degree features aunique interdisciplinary curriculum of analytical andquantitative studies. Students are empowered to customisetheir degree by selecting from a variety of course electivescarried out via coursework, independent study and SystemSynthesis Project.

    Exemptions

    Students are strongly encouraged to apply for exemption of arequired course if they possess the skills taught in that course

    (excluding project work courses). Exemptions allow studentsto take additional electives without reducing the totalnumber of units required for the degree. To receive anexemption, you must either take a qualifying exam or passan interview with the instructor of the relevant course.

    Independent Study

    Independent study courses provide students the exibility todirect their program and explore their area of interest indepth. Independent study allows a student to undertake anelective course through one-on-one interaction with a

    professor, rather than in a class format. Students are

    permitted to count up to 12 units of independent studytowards their degree.

    Real World Experience

    MSPPM students undertake extensive learning and practicalexperience in the eld of public policy and managementthrough System Synthesis Projects unique to CarnegieMellon University, internships and convocations providingthem with a competitive career advantage.

    e Master of Science in Public Policy and Management(MSPPM) is available as a one-year and two-year track program.

    Learning Outcomes

    At completion of the MSPPM program, graduates will beable to competently:

    Assume positions in policy development,implementation and evaluation, and manage thesefunctions in government, non-prot organisations,international organisations and the private sector

    e MSPPM one-year track program is availableto students with three years or more (3+) professionalexperience.

    e MSPPM one-year track requires 168 units:

    e MSPPM two-year track program is available tostudents with less than three years (0-3) professionalexperience. rough the two-year track program students

    undertake an internship with public and privatecompanies, and government agencies, providing them withpractical experience in public policy and management.

    at Bocconi University, Italy, Carnegie Mellon Universitys

    Pittsburgh campus, and may also participate in

    System Synthesis Projects

    System Synthesis Projects take students beyond theory intothe practical application of skills through the opportunity to

    work with public and private companies, and governmentagencies on real-world projects. e goal of these projects isto provide MSPPM students with the skills necessary forstructuring, managing, and carrying out projects within anorganisation.e projects provide the opportunity forstudents to engage with the local community by adding valueto local businesses and organisations.

    Internship

    Students of the two-year MSPPM program undertake an

    internship with public and private companies or governmentagencies to gain invaluable real-world work experience.Internships provide the opportunity for students to gain abetter understanding of the practical challenges facingtodays institutions, adding greater depth of knowledge andexperience to an already robust degree.

    Convocations

    Convocations are an exclusive forum in which students havethe invaluable opportunity to learn from high prole guestspeakers who lead organisations, analyse and develop policyand play an integral role in information technology, public

    policy and management.
