Karen Strittmatter WOMEN’S CLAN Scholarship Award 2002 The annual Spring Scholarship Luncheon was held on Saturday, May 4 in the University Club in Oakland. Our guest speaker was Susan Tusick, AIA (A’77), an architect who has been working on the renovations at the University Club. Ms. Tusick gave an informative presentation about the renovations of the club and then took attendees on a tour to see the renovated rooms. This year the one thousand five hundred dollar scholarship was awarded to Karen Strittmatter: Karen Strittmatter New Alexandria, Pennsylvania. Karen Strittmatter, a junior majoring in violin performance was this year’s Pittsburgh Women’s Clan scholarship winner. As a young girl growing up in New Alexandria, Pa, she dreamed of performing in a symphony orchestra and began taking violin lessons. This desire to want to perform in a symphony orchestra led Karen to Carnegie Mellon and the School of Music. She is a member of the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic, and this summer she will be performing with a student orchestra based in Colorado. Karen also performs in the Pittsburgh area with her sisters for various functions. They provide music for weddings, parties, and other similar functions. Working with her sisters as a chamber trio has instilled in her a deep love for performing chamber music. Those who attended this year’s spring luncheon had the opportunity to appreciate Karen’s musical talent. The Pittsburgh Women’s Clan congratulates Karen Strittmatter! Women’s Clan Scholarship Endowment FundOur goal to raise $25,000 in order to establish a Women’sClan Scholarship endowment at Carnegie Mellon is underway.

As a Carnegie Mellon alumna, you know the challenges women facein the classroom, and in life. Over the years, many diverse and talentedCarnegie Mellon women have met these challenges and used theirdegree to carve their personal brand of creativity and success. Muchhas changed, but young women today still face many challenges. Bycontributing to the Women’s Clan Scholarship Fund you can givewomen the chance to obtain a top-quality education that will helpthem excel both personally and professionally.

A scholarship can help change a young woman’s life. Some of themost talented and creative women might not be able to attendCarnegie Mellon without extra financial support. When you supportthe Women’s Clan Scholarship Fund by attending events, purchasingraffle tickets, directing Carnegie Mellon contributions to the Women’sClan or making contributions in memoriam, you make an investmentin the future—the future women scientists, engineers, artists, thinkersand entrepreneurs.

By establishing the Women’s Clan Scholarship endowment, it willhonor the past work and dedication of the Women’s Clan that madeit possible to award scholarships to deserving women from 1930 tothe present and to assure its future continuance.

Please help us meet our goal and think about incorporating theWomen’s Clan Scholarship Fund in your yearly contribution budget. Itwould be so greatly appreciated especially by the scholarship recipients.
