Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

A Message from the Headteacher

On behalf of the children, staff and Governors, I’d like to welcome you to Carnforth North Road

Community Primary School

We are a school which believes in the value of every child and adult who enters our doors. As

such we want all those who become part of our school community, whether a child or an adult,

to feel valued, happy, respected and to recognise their role in making our school ‘excellent’.

North Road School is at an exciting time in its history. The school community has grown

significantly in recent years and there have been many exciting developments that enhance

both the learning opportunities and the learning environment for our children.

We also see ourselves at the heart of the community and are proud of the strong links we have

with local community groups and businesses, and with our neighbouring schools. We strive to

make good use of local facilities and resources such as the railway station and Leighton Moss

amongst many others.

Should you wish to visit the school to see our facilities and to gain an understanding of the

work we do, please do not hesitate to contact the office, or pop in to make an appointment.

We will be happy to see you. Thank you for showing an interest in our school. Our brochure

contains some basic information about our school and its curriculum.

1. THE SCHOOL

Carnforth North Road School is a Community Primary School for children between the ages of

5 and 11. We have on average 27 children in each year class.

The school day begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:05 p.m.

Aims of the School

At North Road School we aim to:

Recognise that each child has skills and talents which we need to identify and

develop.

Treat all children equally, and get to know them well.

Provide an education designed for the development of the whole person, social,

emotional, physical, cultural, intellectual and moral.

Encourage and instil a curiosity, and enthusiasm for education in our children which

we hope will last for life.

Encourage a purpose, a discipline (especially self-discipline) in our children, to

develop lively minds and good health, a sense of independence and of responsibility

within and for the community.

Emphasise the positive achievements of children as individuals, and with others,

both in school and in their outside activities.

Provide opportunities for parents to discuss their children’s progress.

Ensure parents have opportunities to participate in the learning process, to share the

decision-making and to contribute significantly to the life of the school.

2. THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM

We are constantly working to enhance the cross-curricular and creative learning opportunities

within our curriculum. Through this curriculum we aim to allow every child to achieve their full

potential by making learning fun. We aim to organize our teaching and children’s learning into

themes which will introduce new skills in a creative often practical way. The themes are

generally based on one of the traditional school subjects but with strong links to learning in

other subjects too. As well as following the themes we teach English, mathematics, RE and PE

as separate subjects. There are lots of opportunities provided to practice English and to a

lesser extent mathematics skills in the themes.

Further details about the subjects we teach can be found later in this brochure. From

September a curriculum newsletter will published on our website (or sent to parents on

request) each term outlining the main areas of work to be covered. It is very helpful if parents

can talk to their children about the learning being undertaken, involve them whenever possible

in related activities at home and encourage them to choose appropriate books and other

learning resources from the local library.

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

Children in the reception class follow the EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE CURRICULUM.

Children in Years 1 to 6 follow the NATIONAL CURRICULUM.

a) THE EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE CURRICULUM (EYFS)

In the early years our emphasis is on learning through play. Both the inside classroom in

the school and in our outdoor classroom, are rich learning environments full of exciting

ways to learn important skills. In the Foundation stage the curriculum is divided into six

‘Areas of Learning’.

They are:

- Communication, language and literacy (this includes speaking, listening, reading and

writing);

- Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy (this includes counting, number,

calculating, shape, space and measures);

- Knowledge and understanding of the world (including learning about living things,

exploring and investigating materials and objects, learning about the environment, learning

about the past, developing ICT skills and developing design and making skills);

- Creative development (includes using imagination in art and design, dance and

movement, stories and role play);

- Physical development (this includes using large equipment such as climbing frames and

bikes and using small equipment such as scissors and pencils;

- Personal, social and emotional development (which is learning to co-operate, to be

confident and independent, to concentrate, to be sensitive to the needs of others, to show

respect to other peoples cultures and beliefs, to express feelings and behave appropriately.

b) ENGLISH

We aim to develop the speaking and listening, reading and writing skills of each individual

child, according to his/her ability. We attach great importance to the teaching of English as

language is at the heart of all learning. Children develop their literacy skills in all areas of

the curriculum. Every child has a daily literacy lesson. In addition to this literacy skills are

developed in every other area of the curriculum.

Speaking and Listening: Speaking and listening skills are fostered in order to enable the

child to develop his/her own language. We actively encourage each child to communicate

with others, and to express and understand feelings and needs.

Reading: Children are introduced to reading, writing and spelling using a

phonics based approach. Children learn the sounds that make up our

language. They learn to recognise and write letters and combine them to

read and write words. The scheme has its own reading books which are

read in school. From Year 1 (or earlier if the children are ready) the

children also read books which are colour coded into “book bands”

according to degree of difficulty). These contain an extensive range of

books to stimulate, motivate and encourage an interest in reading for pleasure,

information and knowledge. Our Parental Participation Scheme encourages children to take

books home and share them with their parents. Once the children are confident readers

they progress from learning to read to reading to learn. For most children this is as they

enter Key Stage 2. The emphasis moves to developing comprehension skills.

Writing: The children also learn to develop the basic writing skills they have

learnt. The teachers help the children to communicate their ideas in a wide

variety of written forms. Grammar, punctuation and spelling are all taught in

writing lessons. The children are taught cursive writing from Year 3 which they

practice regularly.

Drama: Role play and drama are used in lessons throughout the school and across the

curriculum. Every child has the opportunity to participate in a drama production every

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

year.

c) MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE

Mathematics is a core part of the curriculum and every child has a daily

mathematics lesson. Mathematics is an essential skill which is part of

everyday life and work. We aim to develop children’s confidence and

competence in mathematics. Children learn to do mental and written

calculations and solve problems, including learning basic number facts. As

children progress through the school we develop their competence in

basic skills, as well as teaching them to apply mathematics to real life

situations.

Our aim in science is to encourage the children’s natural curiosity and

to develop an ability to use a scientific approach when dealing with

problems. The children are encouraged, from their earliest days in

school, to observe and ask questions about themselves and their

environment. The children are given the opportunity to test and

experiment with their own ideas. They are taught to look for links and

patterns, to record their findings and to eventually draw conclusions

for their work.

d) DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY, I.C.T., HUMANITIES and MUSIC

Design and Technology in our

school aims to introduce children to

practical problem solving. They will

investigate and disassemble a range

of products, and learn to handle tools

and materials safely and develop

ideas and thinking skills.

INFORMATION and COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (I.C.T.). The

school has computers in all classrooms for use by children for their

learning and also a mobile laptop trolley. In information technology

lessons children learn IT skills that they can then use in other areas of

the curriculum. Children use I.C.T. in all areas of the curriculum.

HUMANITIES (History and Geography)

The purpose of teaching humanities is an attempt

by the school to answer four questions that the

children may ask - Why? How? When? Where?

The work in the classroom is enhanced by

educational visits and ICT. In history the children

learn about how people lived in the past. In

geography they children learn about today’s world

and especially how they can look after it. We have

achieved the Green Tree School Gold Award.

MUSIC

Our main purpose is to develop in the children a love of music. Children have the

opportunity to listen to all kinds of music. They have lots of opportunities to sing and in

music lessons they learn to compose music and play instruments.

ART, PE, PSHE and RE

Art provides a focus for children's self-expression and observation of their environment

and the world. Children explore the elements of art; these include colour, line, shape,

form, tone, texture, pattern and arrangement. Children have the opportunity to use a

variety of media including drawing, painting, pattern making, collage work, three

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

dimensional modelling, clay, plasticine and papier mache΄ work.

Children are taught about famous artists and helped to recognise and

respond to differences in atmosphere and mood.

Physical Education (PE) is taught to all children in the school

and follows the requirements of The National Curriculum for PE.

There are six key areas of physical education. They are:

gymnastics, games, swimming, dance, athletics and adventure

activities. All children take part in at least two hours of physical

activity each week.

PSHE (Personal Social and Health

Education)

PSHE teaches children about how to get on

with others and how to deal with feelings

and emotions. They also learn about keeping

healthy and safe, this includes how to

recognise and deal with bullies.

Religious Education is taught in line with

Lancashire’s agreed syllabus. A collective

act of worship takes place each day.

Special Assemblies take place to celebrate

a range of events. Children can be

withdrawn from RE and Assemblies.

Sex Education is taught as part of the Science and Personal, Social Health Education

Policies. The subject is dealt with in a manner appropriate to the children’s age and

development as part of a wider teaching programme, which emphasises the importance of

family life and personal relationships. Parents of older children will be informed before

work on puberty and procreation is carried out. This is sometimes done with the help of

the school nurse. Parents may withdraw children from the non-science aspects if they

wish.

Homework

Children benefit from additional help at home. All children will bring home a reading book each

night and a numeracy and/or literacy activity each week. We also ask children to learn number

facts weekly.

3. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

We provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities, particularly sporting activities.

See the school website for up to date information.

4. SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

Some children may need extra support at times to ensure that they make good progress. They

may have special needs in learning, behaviour or social and emotional areas. Each child placed

on the Special Needs Register has an Individual Education Plan which sets targets related to

their needs. Children with Statements of Special Educational Need are supported by Special

Support Assistants. In addition, teachers from Lancashire Education Inclusion Service also

work with our statemented pupils. Compliance with the Code of Practice is essential and we

aim to identify needs, provide support, liaise with external support services and involve

parents at every stage. We will talk to parents if we feel that a child is experiencing difficulties

and at every stage parents are involved and their consent is obtained.

Care of your child whilst in School

The class teacher is immediately responsible for your child's welfare, and it is wise to keep the

class teacher and the Headteacher informed of any difficulties (medical or personal) which may

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

affect your child's education. It is unusual for a child to require medication during school time.

The school does not have staff that are trained to administer medicine and so will not allow

medicine in school other than in highly specific circumstances . Pupils who need regular

medicine because of a disability will have a care plan. The school needs to have a telephone

number in case of an emergency. Please notify the school immediately of any changes.

Child Protection

The school has a duty to work alongside other organisations including Social Services, the

School Nursing Service and the Police to ensure the safety and well being of all its pupils.

Schools are particularly well placed to observe signs of abuse, changes in behaviour or failure

to develop because of their day-to-day contact with children. We are obliged, therefore, to

report any suspicions we may have of possible abuse or neglect of children. The school gladly

accepts this responsibility and will ALWAYS act upon any suspicions. We feel confident that

parents will also welcome this and co-operate fully with the school.

5. BEHAVIOUR POLICY

The school aims to be a caring community where good behaviour is fostered and valued. The

emphasis at North Road School is on a positive approach to behaviour management, using

praise, encouragement and rewards. The following approach aims to ensure coherence and

consistence through school, so that children, staff and parents know what is expected. There is

a well structured Behaviour Policy which follows a set pattern so that the children know what is

expected of them. Corporal punishment is not used within the school though the law allows

teachers to physically restrain a child if there is a danger to them or any other child. School

rules are reasonable and few. They are aimed at achieving a high standard of behaviour and

the safety of the children.

Bullying, in any form, is totally unacceptable. Strong and immediate measures are taken to

deal with any bullying that occurs. Parents are urged to contact the school immediately if they

suspect their child is being bullied. In applying for a place in the school for their child, parents

accept and support the Behaviour Policy.

Rewards System

Praise and encouragement.

Treasure Tokens, Stickers, Stars, Stamps.

Stars of the Week – pupils from each year group, these are awarded in our Celebration

Assembly each Friday.

Pebbles awarded to individuals/groups in KS1 classes. A class reward is given when the

pebble jar is full.

Extra Playtime/’Smiley Time’ awarded to classes by Teacher as appropriate.

All the children in school are organised into ‘House’ teams and the treasure tokens earned all

contribute towards the winning House Team earning a special reward at the end of the school

year. All staff also attend and contribute towards Celebration Assembly to encourage ‘whole’

school involvement.

Sanctions

Behaviour of pupils at North Road is very good. However, unacceptable behaviour will result in

one of the following sanctions. The severity/frequency of the behaviour will determine the

sanction administered:

Reminder/warning about behaviour.

Pupils missing playtime complete a positive sheet about their behaviour from a selection.

Time out in own class but moved to another position/time out in other classes.

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

Time out with Headteacher/Deputy Headteacher.

Time out to a defined area on the playground for inappropriate conduct at playtime.

Reduced or non- participation in ‘Golden’ or ‘Smiley’ Time activities.

Internal, fixed term or permanent exclusion.

Stepped Approach to Poor Behaviour

Stage 1 Person on duty (Class Teacher/Duty Teacher/Welfare Staff) deals with problem.

Stage 2 If problem persists or gets worse, report to Mrs Crompton (Key Stage 1) or Mrs

Crowhurst (Key Stage 2)

Stage 3 If poor behaviour continues, or gets worse – report to Headteacher.

Stage 4 Internal, fixed term or permanent exclusion.

In serious cases of inappropriate behaviour the early stages may be missed out.

All serious inappropriate behaviour is reported to the Headteacher/Deputy Headteacher and

recorded in the Pupil Log. Three recorded incidents in the behaviour file results in the

Headteacher contacting parents to discuss the child’s behaviour. Parents are informed when

their child’s behaviour is causing concern and their support, help and co-operation sought.

Internal, fixed term and Permanent exclusions are available – but are the final resort. Our aim

is to manage behaviour positively and help children to become self-disciplined.

The following may result in immediate exclusion:

Foul and abusive language to adults;

Damage to property;

Excessive or repeated violence to other children;

Open defiance to adults.

Working with Parents

We work in partnership with parents to provide the best education possible for all our children.

We keep parents well informed about what is happening in school through regular newsletters

and our website. Teachers communicate with parents informing them about themes and other

aspects of the children’s learning. Parents are invited into the school and the classrooms to see

what their children are learning. Formal parents evenings and open evenings/afternoons

provide further opportunities for communication. Teachers are available to talk to parents at

the end of the school day or at other times by appointment.

We also encourage parents to volunteer as helpers in the classrooms. (All volunteers undergo

a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Check before they can register as a volunteer) Other

parents support the school by joining our PTA (Friends of Carnforth North Road School).

It is vital that home and school work together. Even before your child starts school, you can

already be preparing the groundwork, so that your child gets off to a good start. Here are a

few suggestions of how you may help:

Encourage your child to enjoy books

Read a bedtime story to your child

Create opportunities for writing letters to friends and relatives

Encourage them to ask questions

Talk to your children

Help with number work by playing games such as cards and dominoes

Give them chances to draw and paint

And most of all give them lots of PRAISE AND ENCOURAGEMENT

Once in school you can continue to support the work of the teachers. Parents help in lots of

ways

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

Helping in the library

Sharing books with children

Playing learning games

Cooking, sewing and art activities

Helping with clubs

If you would like to help in school, please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance.

6. OTHER INFORMATION

Young children should be brought to school by a responsible adult. If you are going to be late,

please let us know and we will make sure that your child is looked after until you arrive. They

will usually be taken to the school office where they can wait until collected.

School Meals and Packed Lunches

Lancashire School Meals Service provides well balanced hot meals cooked in our own kitchen.

Children who do not wish to have a school meal may bring a packed lunch. Packed lunches

should be sent in a lunch box and drinks in an unbreakable container. We do not allow cans or

bottles of fizzy drink. Many families are eligible to claim free school meals. If you are in receipt

of benefits and think you might be eligible call into school and speak to Mrs Marriner. We have

a healthy tuck shop when our children can buy toast and fruit from the kitchen at morning

playtime. Drinking water is available in all classrooms and children are encouraged to bring a

sports bottle to school for water.

The majority of children stay on the premises at lunchtime for school meals or packed lunches.

School meals are prepared on the premises. The cost is £11.00 per week payable on a Monday

morning or the first morning back after a break. Your child can sample a school lunch on a

Friday called ‘Funday Friday’, this costs £2.20 – this must be paid for on a Monday morning.

Please send money in an envelope marked with your child’s name and class. There is a choice

of meals, always including fresh fruit and vegetables.

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

Free Fruit is provided for children in Key

Stage 1(Year R, Year 1 Year 2). Children in

Key Stage 2 (Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6)

can buy fruit or a health snack at morning

break. Alternatively, they can bring a piece

of fruit/dried fruit for morning break.

School milk is provided for children in the Key Stage One with a termly charge per child per

term. Children entitled to free school meals do not have to pay for milk.

All children should bring a bottle of water to school, so they can have a drink during the day

Enquire at the school office about application forms for free school meals.

Absences

If your child is absent it is essential that you contact school by 9:30 on the first morning of the

absence. We operate a first response system. This means that if your child is absent and we

have not heard from you by 9:30 we use your child’s emergency contact number to telephone

you. If we cannot make contact we may have to report your child as missing as they have

failed to turn up to school. When a child returns from being absent parents should send a letter

of explanation to the school. It is advisable to inform the school after 3 days if your child is

likely to have a prolonged absence. Absences will only be authorised if they are for genuine

medical reasons. Occasionally absences can be authorised for personal reasons. All absences

from school have to be carefully monitored and FIXED PENALTY NOTICES may be issued for

unauthorised absences.

Attendance and Punctuality

It is important that your child attends as much school as possible if he/she is to make good

progress. It is also important that children arrive on time. Children are expected to attend

school for the full 190 days of the academic year, unless there is a good reason for absence.

There are two types of absence:

Authorised (Where the school approves pupil absence)

Unauthorised (Where the school will not approve absence)

If a child is absent, parents should call the school on the first day of the absence stating a

reason. IA note should be sent on the day the child returns to school explaining the absence.

The school will then decide whether to authorise the absence. If authorisation were to be

refused, for instance if a child was kept off school for a birthday, then the parents would be

informed. A note is essential for authorisation of absence. Should parents/carers not inform us

of absence, then school will contact the home by telephone on the initial day, following this

with a letter after 3 days of unexplained absence. This contact needs to be recorded in

the register by the class teacher.

If your child has an appointment during the day please notify us beforehand. All children must

be collected from school and will only be released to make their own way home if we have a

written letter and dated request from a parent.

Family Holidays During Term Time

Parents are strongly urged to avoid booking a family holiday during term time. Parents

do not have the right to take their child out of school for such a holiday, but the school may

choose to grant leave of absence of up to 10 days in any school year. In exceptional

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

circumstances it may be necessary for longer planned absence. All such cases should be

discussed with the Headteacher.

Charging

It is the school’s policy that "voluntary contributions" will be asked of parents from time to

time to cover the cost of certain extra-curricular activities, educational visits and activities

directly related to the National Curriculum which, while not absolutely essential, greatly

enhance the children's learning. Such contributions will be kept to an absolute minimum but

without them the activities could not take place. Any compulsory charges would only be levied

on areas not legally defined as part of each child's National Curriculum entitlement and parents

would be informed well in advance in order to make their own decisions.

Security

Sadly we live in times that are not always safe. Whilst we are always glad to see parents in

school we ask that they always use the main entrance and report to the office so that we know

who is in the building. If you are staying for more than a few minutes you will be asked to sign

in and wear a visitor’s badge. ALL doors will be kept locked during the day. This may be

inconvenient but is for the SAFETY of the CHILDREN.

Students and Trainees

Part of the school's commitment to the wider educational community is our involvement with

students. This involvement ranges from High School pupils on work experience to post-

graduate trainees from the universities. During your child's stay with us he/she will almost

certainly spend time working with or being taught by students. This is a normal and very

valuable part of the education offered by the school.

Welfare

Occasionally children become ill or have an accident at school. It is essential that we can

contact you if necessary during the school day. We do have several trained First Aiders in

school and your child will be looked after in school until you arrive. If your child has asthma

please let us know and ensure that he/she has an inhaler in school if necessary. The inhaler

will be kept with your child. Apart from in exceptional circumstances school will not allow any

other medication into school. Head lice are a problem in most schools. If we suspect your child

has head lice we will ask you to take them home to be treated along with the rest of the

family.

School Nurse

Our school nurse is Mrs Liz Atkinson who can be contacted on 01524 406495 or 406 496. She

is based at Carnforth Clinic but also operates a drop-in system at school.

Assessment, Recording and Reporting

Children’s work is continually being assessed by the class teacher allowing them to plan their

next lessons appropriately. In addition to this, children are assessed more formally using a

variety of tests which not only indicate progress but also highlight difficulties which can be

dealt with. Children in Year 6 and Year 2 will undertake their end of Key Stage SAT’s.

You will be invited into school for two parents’ evenings, one in the Autumn and one in the

Spring terms to discuss your child’s progress. You can of course make an appointment at any

other time to come and talk to your child’s class teacher or the Headteacher about your child’s

development. Parents will receive a written report at the end of the Summer Term.

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

Educational Visits

A range of visits are organised for the children at North Road and

form an integral part of their education. All visits follow the

Lancashire County Council Policy and Procedures for Educational

Visits and are risk assessed accordingly.

Parents will always be told in advance of proposed trips and asked for a voluntary contribution.

No child will be barred from taking part in a visit due to financial difficulties but trips may have

to be cancelled if insufficient money is collected. If you have any problems please come and

talk to someone in school. No child can be taken off the school premises without parental

permission.

Community Links

A school is part of the community which it serves. Accordingly, links have been made with local

nursery and playgroups and with local secondary schools to ease the transition for each phase

of a child’s education. Also our school offers students from local schools and colleges the

opportunity to undertake valuable work experience. Students from the University of Cumbria

gain valuable classroom experience at North Road School.

The school works closely with the school nurse, the School Support Officer, social services and

other agencies for the benefit of the children and their families.

Various outside speakers, cultural organisations, sports and artistic bodies work in school from

time to time to provide added interest and variety to the school work. Recently British Cycling

have delivered a programme of PE related cycling activities. The teachers also use the local

environment to supplement various curricular areas.

Jewellery in School

Only watches and stud earrings should be worn in school. The school governors state that, in

line with county policy, all jewellery must be removed by the child themselves before any PE,

Games or Swimming lessons. Members of staff or other children must not remove such

jewellery (e.g. earrings).

Friends of North Road School

All parents and friends of children at North Road School are eligible to join this group. The

‘Friends’ exist to support the school in providing close social links with its parents. Fundraising

through fairs and events provides money to provide ‘extra’ resources for the children.

Chairperson Mrs R Hopkinson

Secretary Mrs A Seddon

Treasurer Mrs K George

An AGM is held early in the Spring Term.

The Premises

The school was built in 1914 and has had various additions over the

years. There are seven classrooms, a hall, a library, an art and design

room and a fully equipped ICT suite w hich all children use. Outside,

we have a large playground and grass playing field. Part of the field is

a ‘Breathing Space’ area and we have garden plots where the children

grow fruit and vegetables. We also have a purpose built outdoor play

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

area for the younger children and are currently developing an outdoor ‘classroom’ for our

younger children. The grounds and immediate surroundings also offer many opportunities for

environmental work. We are also planning to develop the grounds further through having a

problem solving/orienteering facility and an outdoor ‘classroom’ for our KS2 children. We very

much encourage the children to respect, care for and take pride in their school environment.

School Holidays

Please see the school website for the latest term and holiday dates.

Formal Complaints Procedure

If you become concerned in any way about your child’s education, it is important that you tell

us about this. As a first step you should discuss your concerns with your child’s teacher. If you

are still concerned after talking with the teacher, you should arrange to meet with the

Headteacher (Mr A Ibison). Obviously, as a staff, we will do all we can to resolve your concerns

and to ensure you are happy with your child’s education. There may be some occasions when

parents wish to complain about matters relating to the curriculum and collective worship which

are the responsibility of the Governing Body and/or the Local Education Authority. Special

formal arrangements exist for dealing with complaints of this kind.

The County Council’s insurance arrangements in relation to children and parents are as

follows:

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

1. The County Council’s liability insurance arrangements provide protection for the County

Council in respect of claims for compensation made by any person suffering bodily

injury or damage to property due to some act or error of the County Council.

These arrangements are in respect of the County Council’s legal liabilities only, and it should

be noted that the County Council does not automatically accept liability for any injury or

damage which may occur as it would have to be proved that the County Council was legally

responsible for the injury or damage suffered, i.e. it was our fault.

2. Where an injury or damage to property arises due to some act or neglect of a third

party (i.e. some person or organisation other than the County Council) any resultant

claim for compensation would have to be directed towards the third party and not the

Council.

7. STATEMENT ON "EDUCATION FOR ALL IN A PLURALIST SOCIETY"

We live in a society, which consists of many different ethnic groups, each of which has its own

customs and beliefs, each of which may be misunderstood by those outside it. As a Community

Primary School within this society, Carnforth North Road Primary School recognises that an

important part of its mission should be to promote understanding and tolerance of others.

Consequently, the school seeks to provide an education, which, amongst other things, nurtures

in the pupils an understanding of, and respect for, other cultures, creeds and racial groups.

The policies and practices adopted by the school to achieve this end are outlined below.

9. ADMISSION PROCEDURE

Reception Induction Programme

The school follows the County Admissions Policy and admits children in the September of the

school year in which the child will have her/his fifth birthday. The admissions number for each

age group is 30.

Starting school is one of the most important things that happen in the life of a young child and

our aim is to make it as happy an experience as we possibly can. We think a caring

atmosphere is essential to this process, as is the need for good relationships with you and your

child.

The Induction Programme is in several stages:

1. Parents are invited to an introductory meeting.

2. Pre-school ‘First Steps into School’ sessions. New starters can attend a pre-school

session for half an hour every week from the Summer Term. The pre-school sessions

are held in the Reception classroom from 1.30 – 2.00pm. Here your child meets other

Carnforth North Road Community Primary School

classmates, teachers, classroom assistants and also familiarises themselves with the

building.

3. Home Visiting – the reception teacher and the classroom assistant visit the homes of

each child or arrange an individual appointment at school in the Summer Term. This is

an opportunity to build relationships and help in understanding each child as an

individual. There is time to discuss the school and early learning approaches.

4. Part Time Education – for the first few weeks children attend school for half a day. The

school day can seem long at first and this gradual introduction to school helps the

children to settle. After a week or so, the child can stay for lunch and full time

education can start.

11. AND FINALLY...

We would be delighted to welcome you on a visit to our fantastic school. We will be holding

open meetings for parents/carers who are seeking a place in our reception class. These take

place in the Autumn term and provide an opportunity to meet some of our children, governors,

parents and staff. Details will posted on our website. If you are looking for a school place for

an older child please telephone to establish if we have any vacancies in the appropriate year

group. All schools are very different and choosing the right one for your child is not an easy

task. We wish you every success in finding the school that best suits your child’s unique

personality, interests and learning needs.
