Well-planned graphics

that accurately reflect

your business will

improve your image

and increase sales,

says Aron Daniels of

Greenville’s Emerson

Designs.

Aron, a professional

graphics artist, says

business owners who

are tired of looking at

their old logo a friend or

relative designed, or an

advertisement that just

doesn’t work, are

among his typical

clients. And those are

the clients that he gets

the most fulfillment

working with.

“I really love investing in people. I love making people

excited and enjoy what they are doing. So when I do an

advertisement for somebody, or a business card or

brochure that accurately reflects them--- that is a rarity for

people. They are often frustrated with how they’re being

represented,” Aron says.

Emerson Designs

specializes in

business logos, print

advertisement,

brochures,

magazines, sales

literature, book

covers, banners, t-

shirts and corporate

identity graphics. The

Greenville office on

Commerce Street will

open in the near

future, Aron reports.

Graphic design for

magazines remains

one of his favorite

projects. His career

includes working with real estate and consumer

magazines in western and central North Carolina.

“I think that print is always going to be hard, but I love it,”

he says, referring to the ever-changing magazine

publishing business. “I think that most people have a

certain nostalgia for leaning over and picking up a

magazine they can flip through. You don’t need a

(browser) plug-in. You don’t need to know anything

technical to read the magazine,” he explains.

Aron’s roots in the graphic design business go back to his

childhood, when his father introduced him to a software

package called Photoshop, a popular image management

and photo creative tool used in his industry.

“When I was a little kid by Dad got our first computer in

our house. He was somebody who had a lot of programs

like Photoshop. So I started playing with it and got

hooked. I was 12 or 13 and after that there was nothing I

wasn’t willing to do.”

Aron’s graphics skills blossomed in high school and later,

at Western Carolina University, from which he earned a

Graphic Design degree in art, concentrating on graphic

design. He then interned at a local magazine production

company that specialized in real estate.

“I was putting houses on paper and leaves on his trees,”

he recalls with a smile. However, the small market around

rural Asheville didn’t offer much in the way of career

growth, so he migrated east and worked for a newspaper

in Winston-Salem before landing a full-time job with a real

estate magazine.

Owning his own business was always in the back of his

mind, so when he and his wife moved to Greenville to be

close to family, it was time to start Emerson Designs, he

says. His wife, a former teacher, now works for a plant

nursery.

“She gets to dig in the dirt all day and I get to do art all

day,” Aron quips. They have a young son.

This edition we meet local graphic

artist Aron Daniels who owns

Emerson Designs in Greenville.

Aron is an energetic young

businessman who has worked in

western, central and now eastern

North Carolina helping businesses

look good on paper. He has a nice

touch with designing logos, print

advertisements and other "visual

tools" your business needs.

But he also has experience working in the magazine

industry and offers his opinion on page 3 about why

magazines are here to stay. Obviously, we have a

special interest in agreeing with him as we work hard

to bring this publication and the Pitt County Women's

Journal to you for free every month. And we've been

doing it now for a decade so we're not going

anywhere.

We recognize the internet and social media are huge

influences on our lives, and that's why we have

websites and Facebook pages for our magazines.

These tools are also effective in driving business to

our advertisers. But yet, there is nothing more

pleasing to the senses than to pick up that

magazine, relax and enjoy the beautiful photography

and quality content on our inside pages.

We are lucky to live in a community where we still

have a local newspaper and publications that bring

out the best in us. We love being part of that

community. We hope you do also.

On the lighter side, men hate to admit it, but we can

be vain also. Thinning hair can drive down our

confidence, especially if it starts in our 30's or 40's.

Our old friend Don Baker at East Carolina Hair Clinic

writes about a solution you may want to consider

since it does not involve surgery.

Well, by the time you read this, the holiday season of

2015 will be behind us and we're marching forward

to the rest of 2016, which will be an interesting year

to say the least. At least my friend Chester Zickel

thinks so. Chester gets all riled up watching

television news and sometimes I have to take him

out for a walk to settle him down.

I think taking a nice quiet walk might just be the thing

for me right now also. Meanwhile, enjoy reading this

magazine and hope to hear from you.

Until next time,

Veterinarians get asked

a lot of questions by pet

parents, including

whether they should

groom their pooch or

kitty. Dr. Laura Wiles

with the Bramton Vet

Council encourages

people to groom their

pets themselves -

starting when they're puppies or kittens if possible - so

they get used to not only being groomed but also touched

all over their body. It also gives pet parents an

opportunity to check for injuries and early signs of

disease, such as growths or painful joints.

Grooming can also strengthen the bond between people

and their furry friends, according to Dr. Wiles, and it's

extra fun if the whole family gets involved. Dr. Wiles

shares the top questions she gets asked about grooming,

and her responses:

How often should I bathe my dog?

That depends on your dog's hair type and how dirty he

gets, but no more than once a week or they'll get dry skin.

Avoid getting water in your dog's ears - squeeze them

shut - as this could cause an infection.

What should I bathe my dog with?

Don't use a shampoo for humans because animal

skin has a different pH to human skin. Instead,

you want a shampoo that's quick and easy to

apply all over your pet. Try a shampoo such as

OUT! Easy Spray Shampoo which has an easy-

grip bottle and 360-degree spray so you can

spray, lather, and rinse your pooch in as little as

three minutes. Hold your dog with one hand while

using the other to apply a gentle, continuous

spray all over your pooch's body - even the hard-

to-reach underbelly. Visit www.outpetcare.com for

more information.

Do I bathe my cat?

No, cats hate water. If your cat gets terrible mats,

have her groomed at the vet under sedation (do

not try trimming them yourself with scissors). If

kitty is just dirty, wipe her with a dry washcloth or

towel, or use a waterless shampoo for cats. Try

something like Vet's Best Waterless Cat Bath,

www.vetsbest.com, which acts as a soothing

natural cleanser and moisturizes the skin and fur

without affecting topical flea control products.

Should I clean my pet's ears?

Yes, but check first with your vet for advice on

which cleaner to use. Soak a cotton ball with a

cleaner that has a drying agent so they don't get

an infection caused by water in the ears. Only

clean the ear on the outside and around the inside.

What else do I need to do?

You'll need to brush your pet to keep its coat clean and

healthy. There are several types of combs, brushes and

slickers available for cats and dogs. Select the right one

for the length and thickness of your pet's coat. If your pet

has long hair, it will need daily brushing; for shorter-

haired pets, groom them at least once a week. If you

decide to clip your dog's coat, invest in a good pair of dog

grooming clippers and follow the instructions that come

with it.

Saving money and staying fit are

traditional New Year's resolutions,

but overly packed schedules and

the materialistic focus of modern

day life are inspiring a new goal for

many people: to live happier in 2016

and beyond.

"To make 2016 the happiest year

ever, think about how you rest, eat

and move," says Matt Johnson,

health and performance expert and

president of On Target Living. "I am

a believer that mental health is

directly related to physical health.

For most of human existence we have viewed the mind -

the head - different from the physical body of the neck

down. New research is showing they have everything to

do with each other. If you want optimal physical health,

you need optimal mental health and happiness. When

people are happier they tend to improve all aspects of

their life."

Johnson offers some surprisingly simple, yet profoundly

effective ways to boost mood and overall happiness in the

new year:

1. Make sleep a priority

Getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night is critical

for the body to produce hormones that trigger happiness,

explains Johnson.

"I am a big fan of always going to bed with a positive

attitude," he says. "If you go to bed angry, worried or

stressed, that tends to come back the next day. Do what

you can before bed to reset your mood. Read, take a bath,

exercise or talk face-to-face. Try to avoid screen time."

2. Make more time for family

"Over the last 20 years, family time has vanished. Sporting

events, projects, work and technology have swallowed this

time," says Johnson. "As the author of the cookbook

Target to Table, I think family face-to-face time is the most

important part of a healthy family relationship and

happiness."

Johnson suggests planning family dinner two to three

times a week. "When we start to eat dinner as a family in

the home, our health and happiness will follow," he notes.

3. Carve out whitespace

Whitespace is time you dedicate to yourself to refresh,

unplug and rejuvenate. This could be making time to do

yoga, enjoy a hobby, read, meditate or take a bath.

Fibs or facts: Misconceptionsabout a common heart health issue

How well do you

know your heart?

Approximately 6.4

million people in the

U.S. were

diagnosed with

atrial fibrillation not

caused by a heart

valve problem in

2014 and there are a lot of misconceptions.

Atrial fibrillation, commonly called AFib, is a type of

irregular heartbeat. There are two types of AFib: one that

is caused by a heart valve problem, and one that is not.

People with AFib not caused by a heart valve problem

are at a five times greater risk of stroke than people who

do not have this condition. In fact, 15 percent of strokes

are due to AFib not caused by a heart valve problem.

"As someone who has AFib, I'm challenging you now to

learn the fibs and the facts about AFib-related stroke risk,

and share them with everyone you care about," says

comedian and entertainer Howie Mandel.

Mandel urges people to visit FibsOrFacts.com to test

their knowledge, learn the facts about AFib not caused

by a heart valve problem and support the National Stroke

Association. While on the site, complete the Fibs or Facts

quiz and the Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance will

make a $1 donation, up to $30,000, to the National

Stroke Association.

Do you know the answers to some of the most commonly

missed AFib questions?

Fib or fact? AFib not caused by a heart valve problem

can cause blood clots, which may lead to stroke.

Answer: Fact! With AFib, the top chambers of the heart

(the atria) do no contract properly to push blood through

the heart. As a result, some blood remains in the atria,

which can pool, and clots may form. These clots can

travel to the brain, blocking or limiting blood flow, which

may result in a stroke.

Fib or fact? Strokes caused by AFib can be less severe

and are less likely to be fatal than strokes not related to

Afib.

Answer: Fib. Strokes caused by AFib can be more

severe and more likely to be fatal compared to strokes

not associated with Afib.

Planning a trip for

2016? While the

beach is warm and a

cruise ship is lovely,

you've done those

trips before. This

year you want

something unique

that will create

lasting memories

and bring you closer

to your family.

"More people are visiting dude ranches due to the desire

to do something out of the ordinary," says Colleen

Hodson, from The Dude Ranchers' Association. "These

aren't the ranches from 'City Slickers.' High-end ranches

across the country average 45 guests. You get to know

everyone. By the end, you'll have friendships and

memories to last a lifetime, and you will reconnect with

your family in a way you never thought possible."

Travelers enjoy getting a taste of the dude ranch

experience blended with a heaping serving of other

popular vacation-type activities. Today's dude ranches

cater to a diverse crowd with attractions, services and

things to do that travel far beyond the trail.

North Carolina Dude Ranches can be found in

Burnsville, NC (Clear Creek Ranch) and in Candler, NC

(Pisgah View Ranch). Both are located in western

North Carolina’s beautiful mountain region.

"Dude ranches are the original Western adventure

vacation," says Colleen Hodson. "Though guest

expectations have changed and ranchers have had to

change with them, the core principles of dude ranching

remain the same: horses, hats, hospitality, heritage,

honesty and heart."

In addition to discovering the beauty of nature and gazing

into a crackling fire, here are other top reasons dude

ranch vacations are a top trend for 2016:

Indulge the taste buds

Home cooked cuisine that oftentimes features ingredients

from the ranch brings new meaning to farm-to-table

eating. From family-style meals to gourmet al fresco

dining, the food is a central part of the dude ranch

experience.

Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure

You can learn traditional ranching skills like riding a

horse, driving cattle and throwing a lasso, but adventures

on a dude ranch don't stop there. Some ranches offer

overnight pack trips, rodeos, target shooting, zip lining and

white water rafting.

Laser Light TherapyNon-Surgical Hair Loss Treatment

ECHC Laser Hair

Therapy (LHT)

offers a non-

surgical solution for

male and female

hair loss, baldness

or thinning hair, as

well as other

disorders of the

scalp such as

dermatitis or over

sebaceous glands.

For years, LHT has

been proven to

effectively treat and

control problem hair

loss for men and

women. LHT uses

the same principles

on hair that sunlight

has on plants. It stimulates protein synthesis in cells to

create a healthier, thicker head of hair.

Benefits of Laser Hair Therapy

Restore your own natural hair.

Increase blood supply to the scalp up to 54%.

Stops hair loss in 85% of patients.

Repairs damaged hair shafts, resulting in a 25%

increase in volume.

Reduces excess levels of DHT hormones that

contribute to genetic thinning.

Alleviates scalp irritations, such as dryness, peeling,

excessive oiliness, or itchiness.

Prevents dormant stage in newly transplanted hair

follicles.

Preserves chemical hair color and perms.

Why we lose our hair…

The main cause of hair loss can

be attributed to the conversion of

testosterone into

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the

buildup of oils on the scalp due

to overactive sebaceous glands,

or vitamin deficiency. The

buildup of DHT and oils on the

scalp cause hair follicles to

shrink and hair to shed

prematurely. These traits will

make hair much finer and

thinner, eventually leading to

baldness.

If the follicle is damaged by

these known causes, the hair

growth cycle is interrupted. Only

through professional treatment

with Laser Hair Therapy can the

follicles be rejuvenated to

produce a thick, healthy head of

hair. LHT treatments will

stimulate blood flow to the follicles allowing it to

breakdown the build up of oils and DHT. This

transformation will return the follicles to a healthy state

and will promote the natural hair life cycle.

The healing power of energy and light

Studies have shown low-level laser therapy aims to

biostimulate. Because of their low power nature, the

effects are biochemical, not thermal in turn they do not

cause heating, thereby do not damage living tissue. An

effect known to occur during the use of low-level laser

therapy is growth factor response within cells and tissues.

This is due to an increase on ATP and the synthesis of

proteins, which improves cell proliferation, and cellular

membrane permeability allowing calcium transport to

occur.

In clinical studies, low-level light therapy has shown an

increase in cellular metabolism therefore increasing the

synthesis of proteins. In turn, causing tissue and cartilage

regeneration while dramatically increasing blood flow to

the target area. This therapy has been implemented

throughout Europe, Russia, Israel, and many countries.

For over a decade LHT has been chosen as the

alternative to hair transplantation or prescription

medications, which may cause negative side effects. The

laser is classified as an IIIA cosmetic laser, considered

safe for cosmetic use by the FDA.

The ECHC Laser Hair Therapy program has helped stop

male and female hair loss and benefited many by doing

so. An analysis of the scalp must first be conducted to

determine if an individual is a good candidate for our

program.

Ron, a retired United

States Marine Corps

Colonel, has always

been physically active

and an avid marathon

runner. In 2012, he

began to suffer pain in

his left knee brought on

by severe osteoarthritis

(OA). He tried to manage

the pain, but eventually,

it became so severe he

was forced to stop

running, and also

struggled to enjoy his other hobbies like riding his

motorcycle. Even activities that were once routine -

standing, squatting, kneeling, carrying heavy items -

became difficult.

One day, Ron was walking between two buildings at

work, which were about 200 yards apart. He was only

able to make it 15 to 20 yards before needing to stop and

rest because of the pain. He had to ask the driver of a

passing car to take him the rest of the way. That was

when he decided enough was enough, and spoke with a

doctor about his knee pain and what treatment options

were available to him. In February 2014, Ron had his left

knee replaced and then began physical therapy. After

recovering, his knee pain was gone and he was able to

get back to work and enjoy his hobbies again. In fact, just

7 months after his knee replacement, Ron completed his

54th marathon, and in October 2015 he completed his

55th marathon.

Millions of Americans suffer from knee pain. OA is the

most common cause of knee pain, and one in two adults

will develop symptoms of knee OA during the course of

their lives.[IA pain can impact many aspects of a person's

life, including work.

"I spent 37 years in active service, and can handle

physical challenges. When my knee pain became so bad

that it was making my job more challenging and

preventing me from doing the things I love, I knew I

needed to speak with a doctor," says Ron. "Now, I am so

thankful that my doctor recommended a knee

replacement. It's been life changing - it gave me my life

back."

Ron is one of four inspiring individuals being featured as

part of the DePuy Synthes Companies campaign called

Hardest Working Knees. The goal of this campaign is to

highlight the challenges that can arise for people with

chronic knee pain and offer tips for keeping knees

healthy to enable people to return to work. Multiple

research studies have shown that workers in certain jobs

have a greater likelihood of developing OA, particularly

OA of the knee. This most frequently occurs in jobs with

repeated stressful motions (such as frequent bending,

standing for long periods of time, working long hours and

continued physical activity despite pain/injury). Some of

those jobs include farmers, construction workers, those in

the nursing profession and active duty military personnel.

"If chronic knee pain is affecting your ability to perform

your job, or any activities that you enjoy, speak with your

doctor about treatment options," said Dr. Steven Dellose,

an orthopaedic surgeon at Delaware Orthopedic

Specialists.
