Thanks for taking the time out to pick up and read the first issue of Carolina12 Magazine. It’s been a long journey, but we are excited about what we have in

store for our readers in this issue as well as in future issues. At this point you may be thinking to yourself, “What is Carolina12 Magazine?” Well, about a year ago my partners and I were discussing how Raleigh had grown into a full fledged city, right before our eyes. We have lived here the majority of our lives and we can remember a time when Raleigh didn’t really have all that much to offer young professionals. Now there is a new generation living, working and playing under the lights of our expanding city. Consistently ranked as one of the top places in the country to live and do business, Raleigh now boasts sprawling new downtown high rise condos, new shopping malls, a more sophisticated downtown nightlife, and chic new restaurants to boot. So, we thought it was time for a new magazine to reflect the sophisticated change in lifestyle of its young, affluent, upwardly mobile, and fashion conscious readers. We took some cues from such titles as GQ, MAXIM, and 944, to name a few, mixed them with our own ideas and created a unique local blend, known simply as Carolina12. What’s with the 12, you ask? It’s simple. There are 12 months in the year and we plan on bringing you the latest news on all of them. It’s also how we rate the lovely women you’ll come accustom to seeing in every issue. Being a 12 is more impressive than a ten, don’t you think?

Just because you live in Raleigh, and you don’t have the hot movie star girlfriend/wife doesn’t

mean you can’t get in touch with your romantic Hollywood side.

Plus, breakfast in bed just might be the type of romantic gesture to spice things up in your relationship. I bet many women would appreciate the opportunity to be served in bed.

Start off by stopping by your local Target and pick up a couple of bed serving trays. Not only will this help keep the bed clean but it’s easier to deliver food and eat from.

You can make something as simple as scrambled eggs, toast and orange juice. This will surely score you some points. But since this is something that you can plan, why not try your hand at doing something extra special, like French toast.

Make sure you’re stocked with vanilla extract, confectioners’ sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon and toast. And if you try it, make sure you get up early. The cooking time takes about 35 minutes.

INGREDIENTS:* 2-3 eggs* 1/4 cup milk* 1/4 tsp vanilla extract* 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon* dash nutmeg* 8 slices of bread

PREPARATION:In a shallow bowl, whisk eggs. Whisk in milk, vanilla, cinna-mon, and nutmeg.

Have warming drawer heated or heat oven to 200°.Heat butter in heavy skillet over medium-low heat.

Dip 4 slices of bread in the egg mixture, turning to coat thoroughly. Let excess drip back into bowl.

Place coated bread slices in hot skillet. Cook, turning, until both sides are nicely browned, about 2 minutes each side.

Transfer to a warm plate and keep warm in oven. Repeat with remaining bread and egg mixture.

To serve, sprinkle with confec-tioners’ sugar, and with maple syrup, if desired.

What’s your favorite stress reliever?>>Shopping for sure, spending money makes me happy!

What’s the best way for a woman to keep a man satisfied?>>Food. Having dinner ready when they get home. Happy tummies equal a happy heart.

What part of your body would you say is your weak spot?>>My neck, anything to do with my neck. You can touch it, grab it, kiss it. You can choke me...nah I’m just kidding.

What’s your favorite part of a man’s body?>>Probably their shoulders, I like nice shoul-ders or their stomach.

What’s your favorite hobby?>>I don’t really have hobbies, but I guess tak-ing pictures, making photo albums, but not like scrap-booking, photography I guess.

Quick, tell me what you had on the last time you went out. Can you remem-

ber? More importantly, did any thought go into it at the time? In any situation, it matters how you present yourself because life is like an interview. Everywhere you go, everyone you meet, you are introducing yourself over and over. We’re going to go over a few common looks but first, let’s talk about a couple of basic rules

Rule #1: Always be comfortable in what you are wearing. This means to be sure your clothes fit your body and they fit your personality. If they don’t, you’re gonna stick out (and not in a good way). If you’re not sure about what physi-cally fits and what doesn’t, visit a men’s store, find a sharp dressed employee (or a hot one) and ask. Their job is to help guys like us look good so let them go to work. Remember: a $100 suit that fits is better than a $1,000 suit that doesn’t. Having said that, don’t you dare buy a $100 suit.

Rule #2: “Fashion” changes from season to season and year to year but “Style” is a personal thing

that remains your own. It all goes back to Rule #1. Somebody with a fat ass shouldn’t wear low-rise, skinny jeans just because they are supposed to be in fashion. (Feel free to subtly share this article with any female friends who may need some tough love.) Take the basic elements of fashion like pattern, color, and design and see how you can incorporate them into your style. Don’t be afraid to try new looks but don’t be a slave to fashion.

Rule #3: Is this a rule? Well anyway, there are a few basic items every man needs in his wardrobe. Here is your starting point. A good fitting pair of jeans. And since they fit so well, take them to the dry clean-ers and specify that you want them “dry cleaned” not “washed” or “laundered” so they don’t shrink. Also, a white button down oxford, a white polo, a black polo, and a black or charcoal grey sweater. Andfinally, a nice pair of black or dark brown leather shoes that at the same time don’t look super dressy but are nice enough that you don’t want to walk around in the wet grass.

*Tip: Go to the book store and check out the British versions of popular men’s fashion magazines for ideas. Don’t be so fool-ish as to actually buy the magazine though. Have you seen the pound vs. the dollar lately?

OK, now for some looks. Below are some popular outfits that can be seen on any given weekend here in Raleigh. See if you agree with my assessment.

> Pleated khakis with a pro-motional (sports team, phar-maceutical product, country club logoed) polo. This look

says, “I never expect to come into contact with an attractive woman. Ever.” Come on guys. The only way to look more pathetic is to wear sweat pants. You don’t wear sweat pants in public do you? Please say “no.”

> Plain front khakis, zip front blue sweater, dark brown leather shoes. Now you’re talkin’.

> An untucked striped but-tondown shirt, jeans, and square toed leather shoes. 2004 called...

> A slim fitting pale pink polo, straight leg jeans, and black low top Chuck Tay-lors. Top notch. Different without being different.

> Jean shorts or jorts. I apologize that you have had to read the whole article. Nothing written here applies to you as you are so far beyond reason I’m not even going to try.

You see what we’re getting at here? You can look good without having to be one of the mindless herd. You should care about how you look and want to express a little originality and a little personality. I hope you find this to be an eye-opening and helpful beginning.

In case you hadn’t heard, the historic Jaguar franchise has had a major facelift. The new XF combines a sleek exterior design, innovative driver

interfaces and strong performance with a luxurious interior. So, when I first saw the pictures of the new XF, I just knew that I had to see it up close and personal for myself. This is definitely not your daddy’s old Jaguar. Climbing into the XF can seem like an overwhelming experience, as you are greeted by an unusual sequence of events. One of the first things that you notice after closing the door is the pulsing red Start/Stop button along with the cast zinc and spun stainless steel shift dial that rises to the palm of your hand. Hit the Start button and the flush dashboard surfaces spin to reveal air conditioning vents. And with a click of that shift selector dial, you’re off. The XF is noticeably quiet at highway speeds, and the car’s controls are easily accessed via the centrally located touch

screen panel. “What about the motor,” you ask? Well, the XF comes in two 4.2 liter V8 powerplants: the standard 300-hp version starting at $49,975 and a gutsier, supercharged 420-hp SV8 variant for $62,975. Both models deliver smooth, lag free shifts, with the shift-by-wire 6-speed automatic gearbox. However, you do have the option of choosing between the standard automatic, sport automatic or sequential manual modes. The manual mode is probably the most fun as it is toggled by F1 inspired, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. It was clear by the end of this test drive that the new qualities of the XF should attract enthusiastic drivers who crave a luxurious sedan with a sporty personality. For me the driving experience was very smooth and very sweet -- every-thing I expected the new Jaguar to be. Big thanks to Alex Wilson at Leith Jaguar for taking the time to introduce us to the XF.

Grant Haze’s songs

reflect a well traveled past to say the least. Born in Tennessee, he lived in 19 states the first

eleven years of his life and eventually found his way to NC where he spent some time growing up in Kinston. It was pretty clear early on that he was a gifted and talented young individual, as he enrolled in ECU at the ripe old age of 16.

However, an admittedly impulsive person, Grant found himself married by the time he was just 18. So, out of necessity and a lack of money he began writing music. Shortly thereafter, he convinced a local bar owner in Morehead City, NC, to let him come in and perform. He only made $19 in tips, but he was thrilled to find out that he could make money by performing

his own music. Afterwards the owner said he would pay him $250 and a meal, if he would come back and perform again. So, that’s how the career began.

“I’ve come to learn that the maturity of an artist is not cheating himself but feeding his audience.” Nine albums later, Grant is probably best known for his distinctive barritone voice, introspective lyrics, and his acoustical style. These days you can catch the very down-to-earth 28-year-old performing at local venues in and around the Raleigh area.

His latest project is getting his record label Rarebreed off the ground and introducing other musically gifted local artists such as

Mike Savvy, Frankie Goodrich, and Robert Legere to the masses.

As we sat down with Grant he was very open when talking about his career to this point, his past mistakes, as well as some of his future goals:

How is it that you currently call Raleigh home?My ex-wife’s family was from here, so we moved to Raleigh in September 2004

What would your music be classified under in a local music store?A music store would probably classify me as Neo-Soul, but back in 2001 a reporter from NY compared me to David Grey & Lionel Richie, but I played the acoustic guitar. So, she termed me Acoustic Soul.

Given the opportunity which artist(s) would you most like to work with?I’d really like to work with 50 Cent, Lionel Richie and Timbaland before I die.

What type of music do you prefer to perform.If I had to be on stage by myself it would be an acoustic intimate hour, with me talking about the stuff that I’ve learned and lost, all while trying to be a little more socially conscious.

You’re also a portrait artist. Is that more of a hobby or also an occupa-tion?Well, I have two very distinct personalities that strive against each other and many times I’ve gotten burned out on perform-ing, so for me portrait art is an escape, but it’s also very lucrative.

Have you ever had any of your work displayed before?Yeah, I just did the artwork for the premier at the CIAA in honor of the TV series on ESPN called Black Magic.

How long have you been performing locally in the Raleigh area?Since 2005 when I was performing at Sushi Blues.

What’s your favorite place to perform?Oliver Twist.

Describe the music scene in Raleigh at the moment?It’s real f**ked up. DJ’s got big a few years ago and now places would rather pay them more to come out and play

other people’s music than they would an original artist. People think that this place is going to turn into Atlanta, but Raleigh really doesn’t nurture its local artists, so it’s not as progressive as club owners would like for you to think it is.

Tell our readers a little about what they can expect to hear on your new album?A lot more guitar. This time I decided to get into more of what I like to listen to.

How has your music changed since your first album?It’s gotten less artistic but more audience friendly and edible. I’ve come to learn that the maturity of an artist is not cheating himself but feeding his audience.

Explain to our readers what the Grant Haze Variety Show is all about?I don’t really take myself too seriously and so music has always been a vehicle for me to meet people. So, the show is really raw and sort of like me bringing my living room to the stage. I also bring in musicians that I like and look up to.

What’s been your best moment on stage to date?Open mic night at The Apache in Atlanta. It was an all hip-hop, spoken word audi-ence and they really weren’t feeling my acoustic guitar, but by the end of it they were up.

What are your long term goals?Number one, I want to be a good father. If I do end up bagging groceries, I want my children to like me and when they’re my age I want them to think that their dad was the coolest guy. I would also like to give my friends the opportunity to see the world the way that I’ve seen the world, and my friends that play music I could set them up, put them on and get them out there.

What’s the last movie soundtrack that you bought?My favorite artist on the planet is Yous-sou N’Dour, and he did the soundtrack for Tears of the Sun.

If you could bring back an artist or group that no longer performs to-gether, who would it be?TuPac and the Outlaws.

What comes to mind when you hear the name Michael Jackson?The 25th Grammy’s where he busted out the moonwalk.

Who’s your favorite one hit wonder?Tony Rich.

If you were a rapper what would your rapper stage name be?Trip.

What brought you to Raleigh?I moved here with my parents in 1995 and just thought that there would be better opportunities for me here in the restaurant business.

How did you become involved with Midtown & Bar 115?I was hired here as the Sous Chef when it was first opened up as just 115 Midtown.

Who inspires you in the kitchen?My father...he always cooked the big Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or football game meal.

Describe your style of cooking to tempt our readers.Very spontaneous, off the cuff kind of approach to food that you would see in metropolitan areas.

What is your favorite dish to prepare at home or work?I’m a huge fan of Osso Buco, since it’s not difficult to make. It takes some time but you reap the rewards. You get your sauce, protein, and your vegetables all done in one pot.

What has been the highlight of being involved with Midtown?We just did a huge wine dinner for the Triangle Wine Experience with world-recognized winemaker Bob

Foley, and I really believe that we hit it out of the park.Do you read restaurant reviews before trying one out?Absolutely...every Friday I’ll read the reviews. I’m big into reading and researching restaurants from here as well as other areas. I’m really into Boston at the moment.

Can you ever just sit at a table and enjoy your meal without thinking like a chef?No, it’s pretty much impossible, but I do try to put that out of mind and give someone a fair shot.

Ever ask the waiter what’s good on the menu?Yeah, a lot of times I’ll just say what do you recommend and usually they know.

How long is too long to wait? And then what?I would think that 45 minutes is too long of a wait. After that I’d go and get a philly cheese steak sandwich.

Should someone feel bad about sending food or wine back?Absolutely not. You’re paying for something that should reach your expectations, and our job is to over-exceed people’s expectations.

What’s one thing your staff may not know about you?They probably don’t know that the first concert I ever went to was Vanilla Ice.
