What Change? Your participation in healthcare research can lead to discovery, change, and healing for thousands. It can be interesting as you gain insight into how scientific research is conducted. Learn more in the CCHS lobby on April 5, 8—noon. Representatives from the NC Research Campus will be here recruiting students to participate in The Murdock Studies—longitudinal research conducted by Duke University School of Medicine researchers. Tell Me More. Led by doctors and scientists from Duke University School of Medicine and doctors in our com-munity, the MURDOCK Study is a project that will last for many years. By studying health information from a large number of people, they hope to improve the way we treat many serious diseases and learn more about how we can better prevent disease. Do I Qualify? Screening includes your zip code, a health form, and other information. Reps at the table in the lobby will have all the info for you. If you prequalify, additional screening will take place. What’s in it For Me? .A $10 gift certificate and the excitement of participating in medical research that may prove groundbreaking.

Be in the CCHS Lobby April 5 between 8 & noon.

Be the Change in Health Care

Changes to the Infor-mation Portal are Com-ing Soon. Watch for it!

Watch Your Back! You can prevent back injury by using proper lifting techniques or by utilizing the appropriate equip-ment. Lower back strain and injury are typically the result of improper lifting or posture, excessive twisting or bend-ing, failure to seek assistance or simply being in a rush. To avoid injury, do the following: Brace your lower back by tightening stomach and bracing pelvis Bend your knees, not your waist. Use your leg muscles. Hug the load close to your body Avoid twisting. Ensure that feet, knees and torso are pointed in same direction. For overhead loads, use appropriate step ladder and test weight. Most importantly, Ask for help! General Safety ACE Module, Carolinas Healthcare System

The 2012 CCHS Phone-a-thon was a huge success this year raising over $13,000!! We also had an amazing turn-out of students, faculty, and staff as vol-unteers throughout each night of the campaign. Thank you to everyone at CCHS for your help & support of this most important event!

Start studying early, reviewing a portion of the course material each day.

Maintain a balance in your life with exercise, healthy diet and sufficient sleep.

Don’t just hope you know it: KNOW you know it by pre-testing yourself. Use practice test questions and scenarios or create them and test yourself alone or with a study buddy. Better yet, teach the material to your buddy and answer follow-up questions. If you can teach it, you probably know it.

Create a testing affirmation for yourself. Attitude is everything, and you can do a lot to create a winning attitude to take into your testing room. Develop an affirming statement such as, “I’m capable, I’m prepared, and I’m ready to blow this test out of the water!” Repeat it to yourself regularly, using it to replace negative thoughts. Contact Nancy in the Student Success Center or call the Employee Assistance Program, 704-355-5021, if stress is really getting in your way.

For more study tips, as well as current opportunities for part-time and PRN employment, check out the Student

Support page on the Information Portal! (Click on Student Resources, then on Student Support.) This month’s Compliance Corner focuses on prevention of infection in hospital settings; a goal of the 2012 Joint Commission Na-tional Patient Safety Committee. Robyn Turton, Infection Preventionist at CMC, assembled a module entitled Disinfection of Envi-ronmental Surfaces and Patient Equipment, which has been implemented for hospital employees and students. Hand hygiene and sur-face disinfection are fundamental to decreasing transmission of organisms. Equipment and patient surfaces can be contaminated by patient use or even the gloves of healthcare workers. This module includes essential points for disinfection of flat surfaces and patient equipment. A few of which are: Bacteria and viruses can survive on surface items and patient equipment from days to months. Cleaning an item removes visible dirt; disinfection is done to a clean dried surface. Always remove visible dirt before disinfecting. Low level disinfection is done to EKG leads, IV pumps, glucometers, and other non-critical items that are reusable; single use

items must be discarded after use.

Cleaning flat surfaces and patient equipment is everyone’s job, and compliance will help improve infection control measures. Re-member - disinfection of any item must be specific to the item to avoid damage to equipment and to disinfect appropriately. To find the correct way to clean and disinfect non-critical equipment in the hospital, refer to the cleaning grids found on Synapse. On the main Synapse page, go to Reference, Infection Prevention , Cleaning Grids, CMC, Cleaning Noncritical Equipment and Devices with HR-MDRO.

The next on-site TST clinic in the Rankin Bldg. will be held on Apr. 2 from 11:15 - 12:00 in the college lobby. TST (Tuberculin Skin Test) is required of all CCHS healthcare students annually, during your birthday month. Free TST’s are available at CCHS and through CHS Employee Health. If unable to fit this month’s CCHS clinic into your schedule, go to the Employee Health office in the CMC Annex Building, across from the CMC ED, M - F, 7:30 - 4:30, for your free TST.

Those are some REELLLY large bees in the courtyard, right? Don’t let their size fool you. They are carpenter bees, and despite their menacing size, you have nothing to fear. The male (recognized by his yellow face) may appear aggressive, but he has no stinger, so he cannot hurt you. The female has a stinger, but never stings unless provoked. The bees love our gazebo because they drill perfectly round holes in it, crawl in, create partitions inside, and lay eggs. An interesting bee-factoid: Female carpenter bees prefer female com-pany, with sisters, mothers, and daughters often setting up housekeeping together. The male carpenter bee is solitary. Who knew...BFFs in the bee world!

What’s Up With the DNC? To minimize hardship to students during the week of the Democratic National Convention (September 3 - 7), CCHS will not have on-site classes or clinicals that week. This decision was made after thoughtful study of public information on the convention, and careful consideration of your comments. Thank you for your articulate, insightful, and well reasoned comments. Your education is CCHS’s foremost consideration, so we will not compromise the overall quantity and quality of educational expe-riences provided, despite adopting a reconfiguring of class schedules during the convention. Because program leaders and faculty are best able to determine the specifics of meeting that commitment (a frequently echoed theme on the student and staff comment blog), substantial scheduling flexibility will be provided to programs throughout the semester. During the DNC, online classes or activities may be scheduled. If necessary, clinical experiences may also be held at off-site facilities which are in less heavily trafficked areas. (Examples may include physician practices for phlebotomy students, outlying skilled nursing facilities for NA programs, etc.). We will give you timely notice as to how those dates will be utilized. We know that’s very important to you. Additionally, the college has identified a number of “Classes Optional” days during fall semester. This allows the flexibility to make up instructional or clinical time lost during the DNC. Programs have choices on those days: class or clinical experiences as usual, online delivery methods, or no scheduled class. The College will expedite the identification of how those days will be utilized so you can plan appropriately. Additionally, throughout fall semester, individual programs may choose to expand clinical class times (start early, end late) as long additional schedule conflicts are not created. You will be informed ASAP. Fall semester “Classes Optional” dates:

October 8th and 9th (for intermediate nursing courses only) October 15th and 16th November 21st

Fall semester “No Classes on Campus”:

September 4 – 7 (September 3 remains as “College Closed.”) Other fall semester holidays remain as previously designated. A re-vised fall semester college calendar was e-mailed to you on Friday. You should be prepared to participate in online class activities during the DNC (“No Classes on Campus.”) and to be prepared to be in class or clinicals on all days identified as “Classes Optional.” To pro-vide you with adequate planning time, all course syllabi for fall classes will be posted on the Information Portal by May 31, 2012, and will include final course calendars.

Mark your calendar for the Annual Heart of a Champion Day, Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Carolinas College of Health Sciences. Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS), Sanger Clinic, and OrthoCarolina team up again to offer free sports screenings to rising 10th, 11th, & 12th grade Charlotte-Mecklenburg School (CMS) student athletes. An average of 15 student-athletes die participating in high school sports in the U.S an-nually due to undiagnosed cardiac conditions states, according to Frederick Mueller, director of the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research at UNC. http://

today.msnbc.msn.com/id/41392612/ns/today-today_health/t/teen-athletes-sudden-deaths-spur-call-heart-screening It doesn’t have to be that way. Last June nearly 2,000 CMS student-athletes received a general medical screening as well as ortho-pedic and cardiac screenings. With your help, we’re identifying those at high risk. With your help, we’re saving young lives. Volunteer information for Heart of a Champion 2012 will be on Synapse by mid-April. We need to reach more than 2000 student-athletes this year. We can meet that goal with your help. Please consider volunteering.

Our Goal: Ending Teen Cardiac Events on the Sports Field...You Can Help!
