CAROLYN SWAYZ E
An Inventory to the Carolyn Swayze Research Collectio n
in
THE LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBI A
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS DIVISION
Prepared by : Regan Dixon
June, 1988
INTRODUCTION
Carolyn Swayze, originally of Grimsby, Ontario, held many job s
before deciding to become a lawyer . While earning her degree i n
Victoria B .C ., she had Tom Berger as one of her professors . She found
the man so interesting that she believed "an account of his caree r
would make a greater contribution to legal awareness than [she] migh t
accomplish as a practising lawyer" . Combining her knowledge of law with
her talents as a writer, she launched into and completed her professiona l
biography of Thomas R . Berger -- following his career as a young lawyer ,
increasingly involved with Native rights cases, to his C .C .F . and N .D .P .
candidacy, through his appointment to the provincial bench, whic h
required his abstention from matters political ; Berger's commission
work, his protesting the ambiguous Native Rights clause of the 198 2
constitution, which cost him his seat ; and finally, his Alaska commissio n
and return to law practice -- before joining a law firm herself .
GUIDE TO THE INVENTORY
The bulk of the Carolyn Swayze Research Collection came pre-arrange d
in chapter files, an order which I have chosen to preserve . Research
materials, letters, and drafts for or regarding Hard Choices, Ms . Swayze' s
biography of ex-B .C . Supreme Court Judge Tom Berger, are filed under the
chapters to which they pertain . In addition to the chapter files are
pre-publishing files of Ms . Swayze's correspondence, and post-publishin g
files of reviews . The whole of the collection records the developmen t
of Hard Choices from an idea to a finished work .
