Task 2 instructions

Look at the pictures of Anoushka’s kitchen.

Work out how many of each unit she has used along each wall.

Decide which units will sit on the floor and how these are arranged.

Work out the widths of each of the units used from the scale drawings.

Use these to work out the total width of the units along each wall.

Remember to allow for any corner unit.

You may want to draw out the arrangement on squared paper or ask your tutor for a ‘cut out and paste’ sheet of the shapes below drawn the same scale. Then paste them into the correct arrangement so that you can measure the total widths along each wall.

Use the scale to convert the distances to work out what the actual dimensions of Anoushka’s kitchen are.

You must be able to explain how you worked this out.

Task 3 Planning Carrie’s Kitchen Carrie wants to plan out her kitchen to decide what units she needs to buy.

This is what she needs to know.

Her kitchen measures 3.5 metres by 4 metres

The height of her kitchen is 2.4 metres.

The window is 1.5 metres wide.

She can only put units against the inside wall without a door and the wall with the window.

The pipes for the sink are under the window.

She will choose from the same units as Anoushka has used but she may have different combinations.

She can have gaps between the units and walls if she chooses.

Make a scale drawing of the floor plan.

Make a scale drawing of the inside wall.

Make a scale drawing of the outside wall.

Decide which units will fit into the space and how they will be arranged.

On your scale drawings:

Show where the units will go on the floor plan.

Show how the front of the units will look on the inside wall.

Show how the front of the units will look on the outside wall.

Remember the units must also be drawn to scale.

Page 15: Carrie’s Kitchen - Web viewis about comparing Carrie’s kitchen to her friend Anoushka’s kitchen. Task 3. ... Carrie finds out how much the items will cost from each DIY store

Use the measurements for Anoushka’s kitchen units (task 2) to help you do this.

Remember, the scale for the drawings of Anoushka’s kitchen is:

10mm represents 100mm

How does this compare with the scale you are using now?

You can draw in the units or make scale drawings to cut out and paste.

Task 4 – buying the units and appliances

Carrie needs to hire a van to buy the units and fittings because it is cheaper to collect them herself than to have them delivered.

She will collect the units from the manufacturer at Ikneld, the worktops from a timber reclamation yard at Treemanton and the appliances from the suppliers at Cookham.

The van hire company charge by the mileage she does.

This is a sketch map of the three places Carrie must go to and her bungalow.

She can go to each place and return home between each journey, or plan her route so that she does as few miles as possible.

The lines show how each place can be linked by road.

Carrie wants to work out the best route to take.
