Aim
To support the raising of attainment in mathematics and
numeracy across all stages
![Page 4: Carronshore Parent Workshop Nov 14](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032617/55aa98de1a28abad258b45ac/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Confidence
To face the challenges of the 21st
century, each young person needs to have confidence in using mathematical skills
![Page 5: Carronshore Parent Workshop Nov 14](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032617/55aa98de1a28abad258b45ac/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Maths and lifelong learning
Maths for the real world
What do you want to be when you grow up?
What are the numeracy skills you need for that job?
What are the numeracy skills you need for real life?
![Page 6: Carronshore Parent Workshop Nov 14](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032617/55aa98de1a28abad258b45ac/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Numbers in real life
Think of the amount of numbers we see on a daily
basis
Can you make a list of the number you have seen
today?
![Page 7: Carronshore Parent Workshop Nov 14](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032617/55aa98de1a28abad258b45ac/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)

What is Big Maths?
It is a daily programme of mental maths with a strong emphasis on learned facts and developing the
mental agility to do something with these facts.
![Page 9: Carronshore Parent Workshop Nov 14](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032617/55aa98de1a28abad258b45ac/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Big Maths
![Page 10: Carronshore Parent Workshop Nov 14](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032617/55aa98de1a28abad258b45ac/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
CLIC
4 core skills lie at the heart of numeracy
platform for virtually all other mathsskills
known as CLIC …
CountingLearn Its
It’s Nothing NewCalculations
![Page 11: Carronshore Parent Workshop Nov 14](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032617/55aa98de1a28abad258b45ac/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Counting
• Count round the room from 0 in 1s
• When one person claps, count backwards
• On the next clap, count forwards
• Make this harder – count in 2s, 5s, 3s
• Try this at home
![Page 12: Carronshore Parent Workshop Nov 14](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032617/55aa98de1a28abad258b45ac/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Learn Its
• A ‘Learn It’ is a number fact that is learnt so well
that it can be recalled instantly e.g. 4 + 3 = 7
• They are number facts that we need again and
again in all areas of numeracy
• There are 72 number facts pupils should know
by the end of Primary 7
![Page 13: Carronshore Parent Workshop Nov 14](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032617/55aa98de1a28abad258b45ac/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
There is no new maths
involved when we add
multiples of ten together.
It’s Nothing New
3 + 4 = 7
3 things and 4
things = 7 things
So its nothing new that…
3 tens and 4 tens
= 7 tens
30 + 40 = 70
![Page 14: Carronshore Parent Workshop Nov 14](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032617/55aa98de1a28abad258b45ac/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Jigsaw numbers are
just number bonds.
They total a special
number in our number
system, e.g. 10, 100 or
1000.
Jigsaw Numbers
I know the missing
piece to 10
I know the missing piece
to the next multiple of 10
I know the missing
piece to 1000
I know the missing
decimal piece
I know the missing
piece to 100

Beat That!
• Time for a test….

Switchers/ Fact Families
What is a switcher?
• 3 + 4 = 7
• So what is 4 + 3 = ?
What is a fact family?
• 3 x 4 = 12
• 4 x 3 = 12
• 12 ÷ 3 = 4
• 12 ÷ 4 = 3
![Page 19: Carronshore Parent Workshop Nov 14](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032617/55aa98de1a28abad258b45ac/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Does being able to calculate mentally matter?
Activity 1 – here is the answer, what might the questions be?

Remember those 3 numbers?
• What was the biggest number?
• What was the smallest number?
• How many were odd numbers?
• How many were even numbers?
• Try this with your partner
