I have 6 years experience working on a variety

of project types in BC, first as an architectural

technologist and now as a registered intern

architect. I am looking for a long-term position

where I can continue to grow and build on my

design experience and building knowledge,

particularly in the realm of public buildings.

I work well in both independent and collaborative

work environments and have been commended

on my ability to generate ideas and work through

them in plan, section and detail to discover

the implications and potential solutions. I have

effectively led and cooperated on a variety of project

types, including single family homes, mid-rise multi-

use developments, T.I.s, and public buildings. I

also have proven experience coordinating complex

buildings from concept to completion, including an

interpretive rain-forest biome and a First Nations

museum and cultural centre.

I believe every project can and should incorporate

principles of environmental sustainability and

community benefit, and would like to be engaged

in a like-minded studio with a team of friendly and

hard-working individuals that strive to generate

innovative and highly functional buildings that

exceed expectations of both client and neighbour.

2015 – Breakhouse Inc Architectural work term – Halifax Full service design and branding contact: Vince Van den Brink; [email protected]

Project leader; AutoCAD, Sketchup, and material mock-ups. Graphic, material, colour and product explorations used intensely to generate a boutique brewpub, from SD through to CA.

2013, Fall – Grout McTavish Architecture Architectural work term – Vancouver Attractions, commercial + institutional projects

Team member from early program diagrams, through Schematic Design to Construction Documents using Revit. Extensive use of sketch models and Rhino modeling to work out complex geometries. Consulting and coordinating with engineers and large consultant team to develop highly intricate systems, plans, and exhibit space.

2010 to 2012 – Murdoch + Company Architecture + Planning Architectural designer & building technologist -- Whistler Custom homes

Work as project leader from principal’s preliminary diagrams to develop design, apply zoning and code regulations, coordinate with engineers, contractors and clients to develop details and drawings for permit and IFC submissions.

2007 to 2010 – Hillel Architecture Building technologist – Victoria, BC Residential & mixed-use buildings, heritage revitalization, mid-rise apartments + a small museum

Work under principal to develop planning diagrams, building and unit plans to create 2D and 3D presentation drawings for clients and municipal bodies. Apply zoning and code regulations to develop drawings and details for rezoning, development, and building permit applications.

3The Nisga’a Museum was a culturally significant building, designed to house Nisga’a artifacts being returned to them from across the country while creating a community space for local gatherings and ceremonies.

This small conference room was to designed like a piece of millwork to fit within the existing space of the Nisga’a Lisms government building.

This custom home was designed for Whistler. Highly detailed, heavily insulated, and taking advantage of passive solar principles, it also dealt neatly with the grade with terracing volumes.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Shifting Perceptions on Sanitation Through the Urban Integration of Wastewater Infrastructure

My thesis explored ways to integrate industrial infrastructure within its community, both environmentally and socially.

Tangible benefits were created in public programme and civic space, fueled by the resources recovered from sewage treatment.

These public resources (park, sea-wall, community centre, public gardens and farmers’ market) are used to expand the site and its program from an industrial necessity to a community benefit supporting its neighbourhood as a public resource and destination.

Bringing people to the site of their public infrastructure is intended to help generate understanding and acceptance for the critical processes of our cities.

Page 7: carruthers portfolio

7 Thesis (cont’d)

Parts of the industrial infrastructure are exposed and co-located with public programme to allow perception and understanding of the need and processes of sewage treatment.

In most cases exposure to the industrial processes is indirect to allow understanding without the ‘gross-out factor’, but screened views, material expressions and reflected light are used to highlight the methods of treatment while also forming the basis of place-making.

This was an investigation of the operations that could allow adaptive re-use of big box stores, working within their existing and structurally efficient base buildings to create human-scaled spaces for other purposes.

The efficiencies of big box construction allow a great deal of flexibility, and after applying operations that introduced natural light and an organization of spaces, indoor streets could be formed between enclosed pods that held quiet spaces.

This music school explored the architectural expression of passive environmental systems. A South-facing double facade forms a venturi-driven solar chimney that helps fuel natural ventilation. Sculptural air-catching towers and pass through social zones of the plan. Feature sun-screening harvests natural light while minimizing heat gain.

The school provided public access, mixed-use programme at the ground level to activate its place on a major axis of Dalhousie University, while a comparatively solid North facade prevents against heat loss while providing privacy to the neighbouring residential area.

10This pavilion was designed as a bike rental and cafe, as a launching point for those wishing to tour the Brion cemetery, and providing a reflective place of shelter and respite on their return from Scarpa’s masterwork.

11This class explored wood-frame construction in the context of minimizing moves.

This design made an interpretation of the Big-house / Back-house / Barn typology as a boathouse and lofted cabin with simple stick-frame construction with cabled trusses protruding out onto a typical maritime pier.
