This cartoon shows popular monuments around the world like the S dne !pera "ouse

and the #mpire State $uildin% lit up with the colors o& the 'rench &la% to mourn the (ictims o&

the Paris )ttacks. *t+s la,eled -lit &or 2/ people killed in last week+s Paris terror attacks0. )t the

,ottom there are those same monuments ,ut with the colors o& the 1i%erian Pakistani S rian

*ra i and )&%han &la%s la,eled -lit &or 25 4 4 people killed in terror attacks in 2 4 in ust 5

nations.0 6nderneath is the num,er o& people killed in each o& those countries. This cartoon is

much more color&ul than Zapiro+s other cartoons. The messa%e is that it is %ood to see that the

world is pa in% their respects to the (ictims o& the Paris )ttacks ,ut there ha(e ,een so man

deaths in other countries that ha(en+t %otten as much attention. This is not to sa that the

incidents in Paris are an less important ,ut that the international reaction was much stron%er &or

these attacks.

concerned e pression and is lookin% at the patients and the other doctor is holdin% a newspaper

with a title in ,old that reads Twitter Crashes. She also sa s -Thum, Spasms9 *t+s Twitter

ithdrawal.0 !n ;anuar /th Twitter crashed and man users complained a,out it. Twitter was

down &or less than two hours. The site was also mocked &or tweetin% a,out the technical

pro,lems it was ha(in% ,ut no one could read it.

pullin% a trailer la,eled Coal Reliance and there is a hu%e pile o& coal in it. The messa%e o& this

This cartoon is simple and has spilt panels one la,eled Zika Virus and the other with

Zuma Virus . The panel on the le&t has an enlar%ed mos uito &l in% towards a &ri%htened lookin%

world as the the Zika (irus has ,een called a pu,lic emer%enc , the orld "ealth

!r%ani>ation. !n the ri%ht it is compared with the -Zuma Airus0 and the mos uito is

approachin% an an%r ?lookin% South )&rica. The mos uito on the ri%ht is meant to represent

Zuma as it has a small showerhead on its head Bdue to a comment he made that a shower would

pre(ent )*=s . The mos uito also has a paper in its hands la,eled SONA which is the State o& the

1ation )ddress which is the South )&rican e ui(alent to the State o& the 6nion in the 6.S. The

reason South )&rica looks an%r is ,ecause e(er since Zuma ,ecame president South )&rica+s

economic state has deteriorated and South )&ricans are an%r . Zuma cannot co(er that up in his

State o& the 1ation )ddress.

shown up to speak he would pro,a,l ha(e worsened the perception o& the economic situation in

South )&rica. Zapiro shows throu%h the contrast o& the two panels that neither situation is ideal

,ecause the South )&rican president is either a,sent or incompetent.

South )&rican cartoonist ;onathan Shapiro known as Zapiro is critical witt and

satirical in his cartoons. 'rom this collection o& cartoons it is clear that he is anti?Zuma and has a

stron% stance a%ainst corruption. "is standpoint on )merican politics and ideals lean towards

=emocratic (iews ,ecause he is a%ainst Trump and portra s him as outra%eous.

)ll o& his cartoons are strai%ht&orward and detailed. The are simple ,ut e&&ecti(e

,ecause he uses a lot o& s m,ols and la,elin%. 'or e ample when he portra s Zuma he alwa s

draws him with the s m,ol o& a shower head comin% out o& his head ,ecause o& a comment he

made that a shower can pre(ent )*=s. #(en when he drew Zuma as a mos uito he put a tin

shower head on the mos uito so a reader can reco%ni>e the President. )lso when he is in the

,ack o& the car headin% towards the Paris Climate Chan%e Con&erence ou can onl see his

silhouette ,ut ou can still see the silhouette o& the shower head. *n his cartoon a,out =onald

)nother similarit in his cartoons is that Zapiro splits some o& them into two panels or

compares two thin%s to %et his point across which is o&ten critical. *n the &irst cartoon he

that Zuma did not show up to the orld #conomic 'orum. "e asks in the title what would ,e

worse &or South )&rica+s economic prospects whether Zuma doesn+t show up or whether he

does. *n ,oth panels the Dinister o& 'inance does not look pleased so Zapiro is critici>in% South

)&rica+s economic state and ,lamin% Zuma.

The cartoons did not chan%e m (iews ,ecause * share the same opinions on the issues he

addressed ,ut * did learn more a,out those topics. Zapiro is representin% a ma orit opinion a,out

Zuma ,ecause he is %ettin% less and less popular in South )&rica. 'or the cartoon a,out the Paris

attacks howe(er he presented a pro,lem that a lot o& people do not seem to ,e aware o&. *t is

interestin% to see how Zapiro portra ed South )&rican issues ,ut also how he portra ed

international issues &rom a South )&rican point o& (iew which is sometimes di&&erent &rom what

we see in )merican media.
