This corporation represents a conglomerate of several North American railroads & airlines with other supporting companies. The UNC maintains railroad routs with supporting truck routs from the Panama Canal Northward through Mexico, Continental U.S., Free Oil States, Canada, and Alaska. Its air routs cover most of the world.

U.S. Airways. Name changes to Union Northern Continental (UNC). Federal government increases protection to foster international trade. Feds sanction armored battle car prototypes with military weapons.

2027 Battle car prototypes derail in combat. R&D works overtime. Meanwhile, more recoilless weapons are used.

2030 R&D finalizes its plan. UNC changes rail gages from 4’8” to 7’6” now designated as the UNC Extra Wide gage. Rails are systematically replaced with the Armored Smart Rail System (ASRS).Bottom deck armor standardized to lower the train car’s center of gravity.

2041 UNC takes over protective duties of its assets and maintains friendly ties to the Federal Government keeping access to military weaponry.

2045 Replacement of the entire rail network completed. UNC provides the government with a “Presidential Train” christened the Eagle 1. The Eagle 1 makes a coast to coast to Alaska run to promote national pride.

The UNC maintains an army of armored tanks and artillery along with the heavy combat trains to protect its facilities from raids and attack. If the Federal Government came under attack, the UNC would add its resources to the Fed.’s. The UNC is a favorite in the Commercial Combat Zones. The UNC also maintains airstrips with cargo, passenger, and escort fighter jets. Because trains and planes cannot go everywhere, the UNC supports its operations with a fleet of trucks. In town, citizens easily recognize the UNC trash haulers and package delivery vehicles. The UNC supports local chapters of the Brotherhood, endeavoring to make cargo carrying a safer business.

Balance of PowerThe UNC and trains were intended as adventure plot elements, and not for dueling or player character personal use. Obviously, trains have the potential to carry a lot of firepower. The primary function of trains is to carry many passengers and tons of cargo a long distance safely. The UNC would go out of business if they loaded their trains with weapons leaving no cargo room.

In general, the UNC owns all of the land under and surrounding its tracks out to 30ft on either side. The UNC may legally destroy any threatening personnel or thing on UNC property without waiting for them to shoot first as long as they have reasonable cause to suspect an imminent attack. The UNC will defend their people, property, & cargo, but never go on the offensive except in the Commercial Combat Zones.

The Feds require all UNC engines, AVF’s, & aircraft to have Black Boxes linked to a forward Vehicular Camera (UACFH p89) and a 360 Vehicle Camera. This helps prove who started the fight. They also require IFF Identification Friend or Foe (UACFH p74). The UNC combines these two devices together on their vehicles. The UNC likes their relationship with the Feds and knows that they would lose it if they went out attacking others. Trains are bound by tracks preventing maneuverability. Devices, which circumvent this, should not be allowed. Derailed train wheels would cut and sink deep into the ground preventing further motion.

Weapon RestrictionsDue to the large size of Engines and Boxcars they may mount one pair of 5spc EWPs (UACFH pp43, 46). These mount on the front or rear right or left arc of the leading Engine or trailing Boxcar. They fire into the front or rear arc. Each side firing position may mount a 4spc Sponson Turret (UACFH p48).

Main Engines or 60ft Boxcars may mount 4 20spc AFV Turrets (UACFH p191) or regular Turrets (UACFH p49). If mounted on a leading Engine, the front turret is designated lower and the front middle turret is designated higher. Both of these turrets can fire into the front and respective side arcs, but not to the rear. The rear turret is designated lower and the rear middle turret is designated higher. If the Engine is attached to another car in the rear, then the two rear turrets can only fire in the respective side arcs. Extendable Turrets (UACFH p97) will allow the turret weapons to fire over the “high” turrets.

Drive Engines or 45ft Boxcars may mount 3 20spc AFV turrets; while 30ft Boxcars or ½ Flatbed ½ Boxcars may mount 2 20spc AFV turrets. The ¾ Flatbed ¼ Boxcars may mount 1 20spc AFV Turret. Engines and Boxcars with sloped front and rear armor may choose to have one less top weapon and armor location. This means that they will mount one less turret than specified.

Engines and Boxcars may mount up to 25 spaces of weaponry at each weapon firing location. Flatbed Railcars, Regular Passenger Boxcars, Livestock Boxcars, & Dump Railcars may not mount any weapons. Tankers and Reefers may mount up to 4 20spc AFV turrets only.

Depending on the function of the engine or railcar, more armor may be added. The extra weight of the armor allows the train to fire large tank guns and artillery without derailing. The amounts of metal vs. plastic were determined through counsel with the Feds.

All trains have HC of 5. Failing handling class roles causes derailment.

Armor All Engines and Railcars use AFV armor (UACFH p193) in all the same varieties, costs, and weights. Due to the modular nature of the UNC locomotives, armor at other locations does not have to match the included bottom deck armor (see note above).

Sloped Armor on all Locomotive Engines and Boxcars: Costs 10% of the total armor cost at an armor location for each armor location sloped. In general, each armor location will be no larger than a 15ft x 15ft area covered by armor. Each sloped armor location takes 8spc (6 for ¼ Box). Double sloping takes 16spc (12 for ¼ Box).

Wheel Skirts Similar to AFV Tread Skirts (UACFH p107). One needed for each side armor location.

$25, 20lbs / pt ($100, 100lbs / pt metal). May have a maximum of 220lbs per skirt.

Railcar Items & InformationItem In developing train statistics I referred to and extrapolated from Truck (UACFH p167) &Compatibility AFV (UACFH p189) statistics. Theoretically trains can use any item in the book if

referees care to allow them. Obviously some things make more sense than others do and some things should have their cost, weight, size, & DP increased to come into proportion with the very large & heavy trains. Example: regular Car Wars Grasshopper (UACFH p182) helicopter blades would not be able to pick up a several ton train car. Most AFV devices work well with trains as well as regular Car Wars devices. Most airplane or boat devices do not work well with trains.

Armored The ASRS contains fiber optic bundles, electronic computers, sensors, probes, and Smart Rail communication devices that send information to Smart Rail Interfaces (SRI), and rail System yard control centers. The information sent includes temperature of the track, PSI, speed, (ASRS) direction, & location of other objects on the track, location of breaches in the track, and

recommended safe speeds of travel. The ASRS also functions as a Hazard Detector (UACFH p73). The ASRS has manual interface ports every 60ft for use with hand held maintenance computers. Communications from the ASRS are coded and sent through the fiber optic bundles as well as broadcast on microwaves. The microwaves are jammed by a Bollix (UACFH p64) on a roll of 1-3d6. Jammed signals will not reach a SRI inside the radius of effect; however the control centers will continue to receive and send communication through the fiber optic bundles. Dead zones will show up on control center computers and on all SRIs outside of the dead zones. The ASRS is powered by Solar Panels (UACFH p85).

officer. UNC rotates shifts so that at least one crew member is awake at all times. $5,000, no wt, & no spc.

Locomotive Train power plants will only work on Engine bodies. An Engine body may mount and Notes use only one power plant; however, trains may use multiple linked Engine bodies in their

trains. Each Engine adds its pulling power to the others for cumulative effect. The Engine with the largest power plant must assume the role of lead Engine at the front of the train. Location for additional Engines does not matter.

All Engines and railcars use highly standardized chassis with a built in Inter-Vehicle Link connecting through the Couplings. All Engines and Boxcars with Locomotive Power Cells are insulated and have built in Surge Protectors (UACFH p88). Every UNC engine must have and use a Black Box/IFF linked to a forward Vehicular Camera (UACFH p89) and a 360 Vehicle Camera.

Rear facing Engines traveling over 30mph must be placed in neutral or they will suffer damage. In neutral, these Engines will not add their load capacity to the other Engines; however, their power units may be drained like Locomotive Power Cells.

360 Vehicle Mounts anyplace that can take a 3spc Regular Turret. It has 12 wide-angle lenses Camera arranged in a dome configuration. Can rotate to track a single target. Comes with 6

Holocubes see Vehicular Camera (UACFH p89).$7,300, 75lbs, & 2spc inside. Holocube replacement: $50, no wt, & no additional spc.

Couplings Couplings come with all train chassis in both front and rear even on the Engines. Quick

release counts as a firing action. Ground personnel must assist in reattaching the railcars. As these were a favorite target during ambushes R&D has improved them.

Page 6: CarWars Trains - WordPress.com  · Web view2018 LM merges with Boeing and buys out Intel. Name changes to Lockheed Martin Boeing (LMB). 2026 LMB establishes larger enclaves known

Couplings make a solid connection with each other. IE: they do not hinge at the point of connection. Instead, they pivot at the same points the wheels do. Two overlapping metal sleeves protect the couplings when railcars are connected. Each sleeve acts like 10pts of Metal Armor, LR, FP for a total of 20pts. In addition, the couplings act like 8pts of Laminate Metal Armor. The outermost sleeve may be Component Armored (UACFH p53) at $10, 4lbs / point regular plastic armor (max 40lbs of armor), but the UNC does not usually do this believing that the sleeves provide enough protection. The process of destroying couplings is similar to chipping away at a large layered cannonball.

The alternative to destroying the couplings is to use the manual release mechanisms imbedded in the bottom deck. However, R&D has thought of this too. These mechanisms are protected by ½ of the deck armor at that location. The hatch contains an electronic lock. The combination to the lock changes for every trip outside of the railyard. Only the crew knows the combination for that particular trip. Inside the railyard the combinations are all standard and all UNC personnel know them.

A thief with the thief skill gets two attempts at –2 to their roll to unlock the hatch. If the thief fails both times all couplings on the train will go through an automatic lock out. The lock out prevents anyone from separating the couplings for 12 hours. Even the quick release will not work during a lock out. All personnel on the train will know that a lock out has occurred and a message is automatically sent to the control centers.

Engines or Railcars mounting Brushcutters (UACFH p41), Bumper Spikes (UACFH p41), AFV Ramplates (UACFH p103), Bulldozer Blades (UACFH p95), Hedgerow Cutters (UACFH p97), or similar devices cannot use the coupling at that location.

Main Engine Main Engines typically house very large power plants, crew of 2 with 2 more in a Tender Boxcar (Engineer, Assistant Engineer / Gunner, Gunner / Mechanic, and a Gunner), AFV Turret, forward facing Tank Gun, and armor.

Drive Engine Drive Engines typically house smaller power plants, crew of 2 (Engineer, Assistant Engineer / Gunner), lighter weaponry and armor. The purpose of the Drive Engine is to shunt cars around the rail yards or to perform maintenance or recovery functions outside of the rail yard. Some leave the rail yard and mount heavier weapons and armor.

Inter Vehicle Links one vehicle’s computer system, power system, and weapon system to anotherLink vehicle’s computer system, power system, and weapon system. Trailers interface

through their hitch and tongue; railcars interface through the couplings. The Inter Vehicle link allows a character at a station in one vehicle to use the weapons in the other vehicle. The character will only benefit from targeting computers at the station that the character is at. PU from one vehicle can be drained to recharge the other. Smart Links (UACFH p47) may be used through the Inter Vehicle Link to connect weapons from both vehicles. Each vehicle must have its own Inter Vehicle Link & Smart Link which may then be connected. EX: A turret on a van has a Blast Cannon in it & the turret on the trailer also has a Blast Cannon in it. The owner wants both of these weapons to fire together. Therefore, the owner must install two Inter Vehicle Links, one in the van and the other in the trailer. Likewise, the owner must install two Smart Links. $150, no wt, & no spc installed.

Black Box / The black box works the same way as aircraft flight recorders. They record voice,IFF instrumentation readings and weapon discharges. In addition these black boxes are

connected to a forward Vehicular Camera (UACFH p89) and one 360 Vehicle Camera. The video inside these cameras cannot be edited or altered without evidence of it being recorded in box. At the Fed’s request the UNC has combined this device with the Identification Friend or Foe (UACFH p74).$2,000, 60lbs, ½spc, & 1DP.

Flatbed Cannot mount turrets. Designed to haul weather resistant cargo such as vehicles, pipes and lumber. Employs upright bars and extenders if necessary.

Duel-level Has two levels of decking. Mainly designed to haul two layers of vehicles. Upper deckFlatbed may be armored at usual AFV costs and types.

¾ Flat ¼ Box 45ft of Flatbed with 15ft of Boxcar. The box may mount 1 20spc AFV Turret.

½ Flat ½ Box 30ft of Flatbed with 30ft of Boxcar. The box may mount 2 20spc AFV Turrets.

Boxcar Designed to haul more delicate and less weather resistant cargo. This same body is used for passenger car, dining car, medical car, and cargo boxcar. All passenger cars must carry at least 25pts Metal / 50pts Plastic Composite Laminate Armor in all positions except the deck by Fed request. There exists an unwritten, ladies and gentleman’s rule that firing upon unarmed passenger cars or medical cars is a despicable act to be condemned. These cars mount no weapons as this makes the railcar a target.

In a specially designated Gunnery Car, passengers may be allowed to operate vehicle weapons from that car only. These cars are a target and the UNC requires major waivers from all participants as this is done at their own risk. Each passenger has a Weapon Station for their particular seating or accommodation arrangement. $1225, 50lbs, 1spc, & 2 DP. It works like a Targeting Computer (UACFH p48) +1 to hit. Any crewmember can override the passenger stations from their computer station.

Caboose Boxcar used by the crew for living quarters with weaponry & maintenance equipment.Tender Boxcar with Locomotive Power Cells to allow the Engine to go farther. Transformers,

cables, Surge Protectors & insulation are built into the frame of the Boxcar.

Livestock Car Same as a Boxcar with one exception, the walls are made out of angled slats so that livestock can breath well with some comfort. They clean up easily. Armored as normal. Gasses, liquids, area effect or blast effect weapons will go through the slats and most likely, kill the livestock. Therefore R&D came up with effective methods to protect the livestock. UNC Livestock Cars employ all of these devices making them a favorite mode of transport for ranchers across the country. UNC provides railhead service to the larger ranches.

As with passenger railcars, livestock railcars may not be targeted. Those who do so or threaten to do so will be hunted. Also no weapons may be mounted on a livestock car, as this makes the railcar a target. Livestock trailers must have at least 20pts of Metal Armor with 40pts of Plastic Armor at each armor location except the bottom deck, which already has armor.

Automated A firing action closes the wall slats to protect against area and burst weapons. Slat Shutters $100, no wt, no spc.

Use the table to find how much space a critter takes up. Critters under 50lbs take up ½spc in a cage or pet carrier. Pet carriers may be Component Armored (UACFH p53) at $10, 4lbs / point regular plastic armor (max 40lbs of armor). Several small critters totaling 30lbs or less may share a cage.

Feed & Water The critters like to eat and drink too. Each hopper holds 50lbs of feed & 6 gallons of water, which is enough to care for 10 spaces worth of livestock for 1 day.Empty Hopper: $75, 25lbs, 1spc, & 2DP. Feed & Water: $50 & 100lbs.

Bottom Dump Hauls weather resistant ores & dumps from the bottom. May not use turrets. Covered DumpSame as dump car, but has a cover and protects cargo from the weather.

Tanker Designed to haul liquids of all types. Requires 300lbs AFV Armor at all positions. IE: 20pts Plastic or 4pts Metal.

Locomotive MovementOn a 60ft Railcar or Engine, the wheel pivot points are located 15ft from the ends of the car. Couplings do not hinge where they connect; instead they make a solid connection and pivot where the wheel sets do sliding between the main Railcar deck and a lower support deck. 45ft Railcars or Engines locate the wheel pivot points 11¼ft from the ends; and the 30ft Railcars place the pivot points 7½ft from the ends.

The locomotives cannot safely travel on rails with an inside rail turning radius of less than 30ft and that at 20mph or less. Going faster will derail the train.

RammingGetting rammed by a Locomotive is a losing proposition even for a semi. To calculate the Damage Modifier (DM), add the weight of all Engines and Railcars in the train together, then use the formula for vehicles over 4000lbs.

DM = Vehicle Weight Total Round down by dropping all decimal values.4000

Calculate the Ram Damage by first finding the collision speed. If both vehicles head toward each other add both vehicles speed. If the locomotive rams a stationary object, the collision speed is the same as the locomotive’s speed. If the locomotive rams a retreating vehicle, subtract the retreating vehicle's speed from the locomotive’s speed. If the collision speed is under 30mph use the chart; and if the collision speed is 30mph or greater, use the formula.

Find total damage by multiplying the Ram Damage by the DM; then roll that many 6-sided dice and add them together. That is the total amount of damage on the other vehicle or object.

Lockheed Leer Technologies Corporation &United Boeing Transportation Corporation

This corporation holds many “Cities of Tomorrow”. These enclaves sport the high tech visions of the future. The LML focuses more on passenger travel leaving cargo carrying for the UNC.

2016 Lockheed Martin (LM) establishes 4 fortress towns: Dodge City Kansas, Casper Wyoming, Sioux City Iowa, & Valentine Nebraska.

California, New York New York, Chicago Illinois, Atlanta Georgia, Baltimore Maryland, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Denver Colorado, and Miami Florida attracting millions of upper crust wealthy people and the upper middle class. These cities offer safe ordered life with well-armed police forces, high taxes, and high property rates.

2030 LMB buys out United Airlines, American Airlines, TWA, United Technologies, Amtrak, and Leer. LMB sells Amtrak’s track and track rout access to UNC but keeps the Amtrak name. Company divides into daughter corporations: Lockheed Leer Technologies (LLT), & United Boeing Transportation (UBT). MagLev commuter train R&D enhanced and furthered by LLT.

2031 Raised track construction begins for MagLev Commuter Trains. 2033 Crime penalties become stiffer in “Cities of Tomorrow”. Death penalty gets wider use; exile for

medium level crimes; and public service for lower level crimes. 2034 LLT & UBT connect “Cities of Tomorrow” with Amtrak MagLev Commuter Trains protected by

helicopter gunships. Raised MagLev platform troughs follow some of the same routs as UNC. 2039 Magnetic field propulsion improved. Amtrak MagLev Commuter Bullet Trains top speed 385 mph.

LLT & UBT have passenger aircraft, fighter escort aircraft, AFVs, helicopter gunships, and other support vehicles. The LLT sponsors a Commercial Combat Zones team. They are billed as rivals of the UNC; however both corporations maintain a friendly association.

Amtrak MagLev Commuter Bullet TrainsThese trains run inside raised platform troughs with wide turning radiuses. Imagine a semi-trailer shooting around a bobsled track. Balance and alignment are critical features of the MagLev trains thus preventing the use of most weapons. They don’t have line of sight with anything other than the inside of the trough or the sky above. MagLevs employ machine guns, lasers, flame-throwers, and other recoilless weapons mounted to the front or in regular universal turrets. The heavy firepower is built into the raised platform trough. The troughs are patrolled by helicopter gunships. Instead of wheels the MagLev cars have 16 electromagnetic rods 25 DP each protected by bottom armor. The leading car contains all of the controls and magnetic field core generators. The trough also incorporates magnetic field core generators and electromagnetic rods. Most of the propulsive energy for moving the MagLevs comes from the trough.

Magnetic Field Core Generator$225,000, 12,500lbs, 40spc, & DP 88. Will pull loaded drive car + 14 loaded passenger cars.

Subway, Light Rail, Streetcar,& Rail Bound Automated Mobile Defense Systems.

These types of trains are designed as passenger trains mainly and not for cargo. The city government usually owns and runs these mass transit systems. However some corporations have adapted these trains for defense systems. The drive engines are equipped with automatic pilot or remote controls. Most use IFF with computer gunners. In the larger old cities gangs usually have control of the subway or light rail systems. They may run it as a regular business protecting customers from rival gangs while maintaining a portion of it for their own use.

These trains use standard gauge rails. The power for these trains comes from an onsite solar station through an electrified third rail or overhead wire. However they need a motor to convert the power into motion.

Armor: $40 / 15lbs.

Couplings: 10DP targeted like a trailer hitch (-7 attached).

Each engine or rail car has 4 axles and 8 wheels. Drive cars have 4 regular wheels on the outer axles and 4 drive wheels on the inside axles.

Drive Wheel: $6000 (included), 2400lbs (included), & 48DP.
