“Basilio Rodriguez Grueso followed his heart (and his future wife) to Bellingham — a long way from his home in La

Mancha. But his palate never left Spain, and so the former banker made an abrupt career change and founded Casa

Ventura Imports two years ago.

Though young, startup importers seem to flock to Western Washington like seagulls to the beach, Casa Ventura seems

likely to win a dedicated following. Having tasted through a fair slice of Grueso's portfolio of small-production wines

from family-owned wineries in Spain, I am delighted to say that this is a lineup that offers both value and exceptional

flavor at every price point.

Grueso, 32, comes from a family who appreciates good wine and good food. His father was a professional chef; his

mother a talented traditional cook. His everyday life in the village of El Bonillo included artisanal breads, Manchego

cheese, local wines, olive oils, saffron and more. Casa Ventura, named for the farmhouse his family has owned since

the mid-1600s, capitalizes on all that experience.

Winemaking in Spain, Grueso believes, has now reached its moment of glory. Certainly, Spanish wines have never

been more popular in this country, and there are quite a few importers who have been mining this lode long before

Casa Ventura. But the magic of Grueso's portfolio is that it truly lives up to its mission statement.

"Not only must the wine be excellent," it reads, "but also the winery's philosophy must be based on nonaggressive

agricultural and viticulture methods [e.g. sustainable, as close to organic as possible]. They must also reflect the

traditional winemaking methods of their region, especially by using traditional native varieties and/or winemaking

processes."

So, along with outstanding examples of wines from familiar places such as Rioja, Rias Baixas, Priorat and Jumilla,

Casa Ventura is bringing in an astonishing cava rosé (sparkling wine) made exclusively from the trepat grape; a

varietal petit verdot from Méntrida; and some exquisite old-vine blends, including century-old graciano.”

CASA VENTURA IMPORTS is the only Spanish wine importer to have 5 wines among the new Robert Parker’s wine advocate top 30 best value wines from Spain (91 points or more under $25 retail; one of our wines is in the TOP 5).

Dr. Jay Miller with the Wine Advocate tasted wines from more than 80 Spanish wine importers in the United States and over 1,600 wines. Only two other importers had as much as 4 wines in the top 30 (Jorge Ordoñez and Eric Solomon).

We also have a set of over 15 wines included in the list of the Best Value Wines from Spain, with wines rating from 88 to 90+ points and between 9$ and 24$ estimated retail. In the second part of this Spanish wines review by The Wine Advocate, the ratings for over $25 retail wines will be published; that will be by the end of April and we certainly expect to have even higher scores.

One of our biggest successes comes from the fact that our producers are experts in making super high class wines (for as much as $100 retail), and it is also these experts who make our less expensive wines (for as little as $9 retail); that way we are sure that all our wines come from the highest quality source possible, from people that care about their name and family tradition.

Casa Ventura Imports is a very dynamic and fairly new wine company, with three years in business and over twenty in experience in the American wine market.

Casa Ventura Imports wine in the TOP 30 Best Value Wines from Spain (91 Points and less than $25 retail):

At Casa Ventura we believe the best wines come from excellent viticulture. The wine is born long before we see it in the

bottle. It is born in the soil and in the hands of those who know and understand agriculture. Casa Ventura’s mission is to find

fine wines from small-family-owned wineries in Spain and bring them to the United States. This involves a number of activities:

finding wineries is a big task, because not only must the wine be excellent, but also the winery’s philosophy must be based on

non aggressive agricultural and viticulture methods; they also must reflect the traditional wine making methods of their region,

especially by using the traditional native varieties and/or wine making processes. Other activities that we find very important

at Casa Ventura are advising wine-makers about blends and wine-making methods, designing and branding of labels that

accurately describe the wines we import and the regions that produce them, etc. Our producers must be dedicated to their

terroir, and must make fine wines. They must also be willing to invest in the American market, understanding that such an

investment, in such a large area, requires patience and careful decisions about positioning and branding.

Basilio Rodriguez Grueso was born in Oviedo, Asturias (north of Spain), in 1975. His whole family is native of the great

wine country of La Mancha. Ever since childhood his life has been surrounded by good wine and good food: the wines from

Castilla and the foods cooked by his father (a professional chef and a police officer) and his mother (a talented traditional

cook). In the old village of El Bonillo in the heart of La Mancha, he saw how bread, Manchego cheese, wine, olive oil, saffron,

chorizo and other amazing foods from this area were made traditionally. For a long time he didn’t realize how valuable these

things were, since they were part of his everyday life. After studying business and economy he decided to go back to college

and become a Spanish Wine Region Specialist through Alicante University, because he had realized that what he always really

loved were the wine and foods that had been so close to him his whole life. Fate stepped in and he married Jennifer Stiff, an

American from Bellingham, WA.

WE LIKE MARKETING: We offer our distributors marketing material to help them with their job: POS signs, posters,

Spanish wine regions information, wine tastings with customers, wine dinners, wine classes etc. and of course, samples of our

wines. We also send samples of our wines to many prestigious wine critics and publications like Robert Parker, Wine Spectator,

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Review…

WE WORK THE MARKET: One of our main goals is to work the market with (and without) our distributors, not only on

our mission to teach them about our products and Spanish culture, but also to help as much as possible in building strong

brands in this highly competitive market that is the wine business. Promoting Spanish wines, food and culture is also part of our

job.

WE LIKE ALL SIZE CUSTOMERS: We have reached corporate deals with many big chains on the West Coast and we can offer

private brand and exclusive wines to those customers that require it. We also like to visit as many customers as possible, from small

local wine shops to the hippest restaurants in town.

AGUSTI TORELLO MATA; Denominación de Origen Cava:

ALIGUER BRUT VITAGE 2005 is a phenomenal value cava from Agustí Torelló. Dry, expressive and very long lasting flavors will

surprise you. It spends 24 moths minimum in the caves, so you can call it RESERVA BRUT. AGUSTI TORELLO MATA BRUT RESERVA VITAGE 2005 has a subtle aging scent with creamy notes of fresh butter against a

background of ripe fruit. The final impression of this cava is extremely pleasant with ample development in the mouth.

AGUSTI TORELLO MATA ROSE BRUT VINTAGE 2006 has a strong presence of wild fruits like strawberries and cherries and a fresh

background of mint. It is complex and meaty, yet light and very, very dry.

BAYANUS 375 RESERVA BRUT NATURE VINTAGE 2005 comes in a 12 pack. Agusti Torello is one of only a few producers that make

a 375ml cava on as a concept on its own: he does not refill a 375 bottle with his cava reserva. As he says, a smaller size bottle

requires different yeasts, aging process, etc. KRIPTA GRAN RESERVA BRUT NATURE VINTAGE 2004 comes in an individual box and the shape of the bottle imitates and

amphorae, round at the bottom, so a bucket with ice is necessary when drinking it. Kripta is a TOP 5 SPARKLING WINES OF THE WORLD according to Michel Bettane, the most influential wine critic in France.

Awards for AGUSTI TORELLO MATA: Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, February 2009:

Agustí Torelló Mata Trepat Rose Reserva Brut 2006 – 92 Points: TOP 5 BEST VALUES OF SPAIN. Agustí Torelló Mata Reserva Brut 2005 – 91 Points: TOP 30 BEST VALUES OF SPAIN

Every year, Agustí Torelló sends us a 200 pages book with all the awards that he obtains for his cavas all over the world…

Paul Gregutt for THE SEATTLE TIMES about AGUSI TORELLO MATA ROSE, May 2008: “Put this alongside a far more expensive rosé

from Champagne and you won't believe the quality. Like drinking a cherry Creamsicle.”

Paul Gregutt is a Columnist and Contributing Editor for The Wine Enthusiast.

In the heart of el Penedes, Agusti Torello creates KRIPTA, described by Michel Bettane, the most influential wine critic in

France like : “Wonderful and delicate walnut aromas, refined texture and bubbles, very seducing finish. The perfection

of cava or almost, and a wine that shall surprise many people.” He included KRIPTA in his book of THE BEST 100 WINES

OF THE WORLD, along with 4 more sparkling wines (all from Champagne), making KRIPTA (along with Krug, Dóm

Perignon, Bollinger and Cristal) TOP 5 BEST SPARKLING WINES IN THE WORLD!

LOPEZ PANACH TEMPRANILLO 2007 shows deep aromas of ripe blackberries, ripe strawberries, black currants (so typical in

Tempranillos), spices and wild flowers. In the mouth is pleasant but firm and expressive.

LOPEZ PANACH VERDEJO 2007 shows great aromas of grapefruit, pear, pineapple and mango. Also some herbal notes and of

course the mineral aromas that made Verdejo famous and helps the wine be the perfect companion to seafood.

LOPEZ PANACH ROBLE 2006 has a floral and ripe nose that shows a sweet perfume of blackberries, currants, licorice, and smoked

herbs. A supple texture, medium body and loads of fruit in the mouth that turn into a very pleasant finish.

LOPEZ PANACH SYRAH 2004 is a delicious Syrah with a terrific value. Aromas of ripe black fruit, roses, cedar and spices

The varieties cultivated in his estate are Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon,

Merlot and Verdejo at 2,300 ft altitude. The weather here is Continental /

Mediterranean, with hot dry summers and wet cold winters; perfect for viticulture.

Attractive wines that offer super pleasant moments, at the best price.

BODEGA REJADORADA: Denominación de Origen Toro:

REJADORADA TINTO ROBLE 2006 is a terrific value. 6 months in French and Rumanian oak, this explosive wine will surprise you

for its intensity and complexity.

REJADORADA TEMPLE 2005 is a jump up on quality. 40 to 50 year old vines of the small Tinta de Toro grapes 12 months in an

equal combination of French and Rumanian oak; it shows blackberries, black currants, and laurel and a finish that is long, elegant

and intense with plenty of fruit and pain grille.

SANGO DE REJADORADA 2004 proves what a unique area Toro is: despite the difficulties that 2003 brought to many areas

in Europe, it is considered an EXCELLENT vintage for many experts and the producers. Sango is a Toro Reserva that spends

18 months in new French oak barrels. Very complex and extremely intense, it shows the very best that Tinta de Toro can do.

Bodega Rejadorada’s offices and old winery are located in the magnificent XV Century

Palace of Monroy in the old town of Toro. In 1476, the Portuguese that had invaded

the city killed Antonia Garcia, wife of the Marquee of Monroy among other Castilian

rebels. She was hung from the cast iron bars which formed the grill outside her

window. The word grill in Spanish is “reja”. Later, when Queen Isabel La Católica took

over the town again, she ordered the grill to be gold plated (‘dorada’ in Spanish) in her

honor. These words together form the word “Rejadorada”, the name of the winery,

the palace and the street in Toro where it is located.

BODEGAS SOLANA; Denominación de Origen Cariñena:

done, it brings black plum skin aromas, violets and an exceptional long finish.

SOLANA 2005 is a Garnacha like only Jesus Navascués can make. Supple, mouth-filling, ripe, concentrated and complex

with earth and underbrush aromas, combined with the nicely rounded tannins and floral notes. Amazing! Awards for BODEGAS SOLANA: Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, February 2009:

NUNTIUS 2007 – 88 Points: BEST VALUES OF SPAIN.

Bodegas Solana is a personal project of Basilio

Rodriguez, President and CEO of Casa Ventura Imports,

in a really exciting but old wine region of Spain:

Cariñena.

Garnacha (55%), Mazuela (Cariñena) and Tempranillo

are the referent grape varietals in this appellation that is

75 years old, even though, as in many other parts of

Spain, there is proof of wine being made before Roman

times.

Jesus Navascués is the wine maker of this project. He is

definitely the wine maker with the biggest knowledge on

Garnacha in Spain, with a long family tradition in wine

making.

Mas Blanch i Jové is our newest addition.

This small family owned winery produces just 35,000 bottles

a year of amazing ‘garage’ wines and also Arbequina olive oil.

This area, Costers del Segre is not only beautiful, but also

perfect for vine growing, rocky and over 2,250 feet above sea

level, and it is just north of the famous region of Priorat in

the province of Lleida.

Sara Jové is the owner and “anima matter” of this incredible

winery that has obtained the highest awards in Spain with

just a few vintages.

These wines are some of our favorites for 2009!

LAGAR DE COSTA; Denominación de Origen Rias Baixas:

LAGAR DE COSTA 2007 is an Albariño like no others. The reason is that in an area with thousand of little growers, Dolores Fontan,

wine maker and anima matter of this winery, makes this wine from a single vineyard: her own family’s. The wine shows a

spectacular range of aromas from ripe mangos and passion fruit, to herbal and of course, the salt of the Atlantic.

Awards for LAGAR DE COSTA: Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, February 2009:

LAGAR DE COSTA 2007 – 91 Points: TOP 30 BEST VALUES OF SPAIN.

BACCHUS DE ORO (Gold Medal) to the 2006 vintage, award from the National Association of Sommeliers in Spain.

CHALLENGE INTERNATIONAL DU VIN (Silver Medal) to the 2006 vintage.

CONCOURS MONDIAL DE BRUXELLES (Silver Medal) to the 2006 vintage.

PORTUGAL 2007 (Bronze Medal) to the 2006 vintage, award from Masters Sommeliers.

Lagar de Costa is a small family cellar with a long tradition

making Albariño wine. But the family only started to

commercialize its wine in 2001. The cellar was built more

than 100 years ago and has been object of successive

reforms, though maintaining its stone structure and initial

wood. Lagar de Costa is located in front of the Island of la

Toja, in the heart of Salnés and it belongs to the

Denomination of Origin Rias Baixas, sub-zone Val do Salnés,

province of Pontevedra (Spain).

The 100% of the grapes comes from their own vineyards;

some of them are more than 50 years old. The cellar has a

total of 6 hectares growing Albariño grapes. The soil has a

sandy texture with good drainage which in summer

produces a heating of the ground that advances the

maturation of the fruit. The Atlantic climate of this area

means that the average temperature is 14ºC and the rainfall

of 1,600 mm.

The vines grow six feet high to keep them away from the

moist on the soil.

BODEGA BURGOS-PORTA: Denominación d’Origen Qualificada Priorat:

MAS SINEN 2004 (35% Garnacha, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cariñena and 10% Syrah) shows a great complexity of wood

smoke, slate, cherry, blueberry, and plum. This is followed by a ripe, full-bodied wine with intense, spicy flavors, well-concealed

tannins, and a long, pure finish.

MAS SINEN COSTER 2005 (40% Garnacha, 40% Cariñena, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Syrah) has a nose dominated by the

Garnacha component with its enticing cherry aromatics. On the palate, the wine is smooth-textured, sweet, and layered with

flavor. With superb depth and length, a true jewel of Priorat.

Awards for CELLER BURGOS-PORTA:

Mas Sinen Coster 2005 has 94 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Mas Sinen 2004 was selected as Wine of the Month by the prestigious Spanish wine publication El Mundo Vino.

Mas Sinen 2005 obtained 92 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Celler Burgos – Porta was selected as Winery of the Month by El Mundo Vino after an exhaustive tasting of many Priorat wines.

THE SEATTLE TIMES – MAY 2008: “Mas Sinen 2004 Priorat. For me, the finest red wines from Spain are coming from

Priorat, but prices have gone through the roof. Want a bottle of the famous L’Ermita from Alvaro Palacios? The current

release will set you back around $700. Try this instead. Vines are “merely” 60 years old, organically grown and dense

with the extreme minerality of the Llicorella slate. The rock, iodine, coffee and sappy berry flavors seem to go on for

minutes after each sip. A GLORIOUS WINE.”

Mas Sinen is the name of a XVII century farm near Poboleda, a little

village in the heart of the Priorat D.O.Q. This farm is today’s winery,

converted by Salvador Burgos. Salvador Burgos, owner and viticulturist

has a long history of wine making and especially in vine growing and

organic farming. His family started their first winery in the early

1800’s. Salvador started working for his father, caring for the vineyards

when he was just 13 years old. He watched his father plant the

Garnacha and Cariñena vines in the late 1950’s that he uses today for

his MAS SINEN, a jewel of Priorat, and a jewel among the organic

wines of the world.

The CCPAE (Catalonian Council for Ecological Agriculture Production)

controls the production of the winery. This council is also conducting a

study with the Barcelona University planting new varieties on the

winery’s vineyard and controlling growth, adaptability, etc.

FINCA LA ESTACADA; Vino de la Tierra de Castilla:

VIÑANSAR 2007 with equal parts of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon shows ripe raspberries, currants and some earthiness,

an incredible value.

FINCA LA ESTACADA TEMPRANILLO 2007 has a complex perfume of damp earth, violets, spice box, and red currants. This is

followed by a wine jam-packed with ripe, spicy fruit, soft tannins, and excellent balance.

SECUA LATE HARVEST CHARDONNAY 2006 is a late harvest Chardonnay that we love; in Spain people drink it with dessert but also

as an aperitif. Lovely.

HEREDAD UGARTE; Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja:

REINARES TINTO 2007 is a 100% Tempranillo that shares fruit from La Rioja (70%) and Castilla (30%). 3 months in French oak

barrels give it the complexity and roundness that you would never expect at this price point.

REINARES BLANCO 2007 is a 100% Viura (Macabeo) with a refreshing, herbaceous, fruity and citrus palate, unbeatable for the

price. The REINARES line belongs to the VINO DE LA TIERRA DE CASTILLA appellation.

UGARTE JOVEN 2007 is an 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha blend from 23 year old vines. It shows the character of Rioja

Tempranillo with the very aromatic and floral notes from the Garnacha grapes.

HEREDAD UGARTE CRIANZA 2005 is a 92% Tempranillo and 8% Garnacha blend with soft, supple tannins and fantastic red and

The Ugarte family’s wine making history dates as far back as 1870, when

Modesto Ugarte began his grape growing expedition. He quickly earned a

reputation for producing high quality wines and his know-how has been

transmitted from one generation to the next. The fourth generation of the

Ugarte family has continued with Modesto’s traditions making Ugarte one of

the few Historic Rioja wineries. Today the passion of the Ugarte family lies

within its vineyards. The winery is nestled on nearly 300 acres of pristine

vineyard atop the best clay-calcareous land in Rioja Alavesa, ensuring the

secret behind the Ugarte wines.

BODEGAS ZUGOBER; Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja:

*

BELEZOS ACUARELA JOVEN 2007 is a 95% Tempranillo and 5% Viura, just like the tradition in Rioja demands, but the wine is far

from being too classic; its powerful aromas of ripe red fruit and floral notes, are amazing.

BELEZOS CRIANZA 2005* is 95% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo and Graciano; this is a very elegant and aromatic Rioja as well as

intense and medium-to-full bodied.

BELEZOS RESERVA 2004* is an amazing Reserva; very elegant with good ripe fruit aromas and a background of chocolate, fine

leather, tobacco and some spices. Definitely a must try…

*BELEZOS wines are also available with their classic image.

Eduardo and Isabel, owners of Bodegas Zugober are also the wine makers.

They are the third generation of wine makers in both their family and they

have combined all that experience and their youth to create a terrific boutique

winery in the most prestigious area of the D.O.Ca Rioja: the ‘Rioja Alavesa’.

In their terrific old vineyard they grow mostly Tempranillo, Graciano,

Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Malvasia. Some of the vines are very old, up to

50 years, and they are the key for the excellent wines they produce.

For their ‘joven’ wine, Acuarela, they use some Viura, a white variety; this

traditional blend gives the wine a very special freshness and floral notes.

around 2,500 cases in an amazing 1,300 acre estate, most of

which is dedicated to hunting, a horse stud farm and the

wilderness, just an hour south of Madrid.

Miguel Angel de Gregorio is the wine maker. He made himself a

place among the best winemakers of Spain many years ago with

Allende wines in Rioja (up to 98 points Parker) and El Contino.

Bodegas Castelo de Medina was founded in the mid

1950’s. Their experience with Verdejo grapes is

enormous and the value of their wines is remarkable.

They first planted Sauvignon Blanc many years ago;

Sauvignon Blanc is a variety that has adapted

beautifully to RUEDA’s soils. The Verdejo grape is small,

and it has a thick, green/yellow skin and green/white

pulp. Their production is 800,000 bottles a year from

their own state vines.

is called Finca Buenavista, and it was built in

1626. Still in the same family, which has been

making wine for four generations now, Finca

Buenavista is the center of the philosophy of

the winery: tradition and artisan spirit.

Over 2,000 feet altitude, poor soils and the

Mediterranean/Continental climate are

perfect for quality winemaking. Varietals:

Bobal, Tempranillo, Muscat, Syrah, Cabernet

Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc.

BODEGAS TABULA; Denominación de Origen RIBERA DEL DUERO:

DAMANA 5 2006 is a very fruit forward wine, with wonderful, explosive blackberries and cranberries, combined with the

complexity of the oak aromas.

DAMANA CRIANZA 2004 is a dark red colored wine that shows big amounts of dark mouth-filling fruit despite its long time in

French oak: 14 months. It is complex and powerful with a long lasting finish.

TABULA 2004 takes its name from the winery; and it is the essence of it. Deep, elegant, complex, mineral… It has an opulent palate

feel with different layers of flavor. 16 months in new French oak barrels and 2 more in French oak vats.

GRAN TABULA 2005 is absolutely wonderful, a beautiful integration of oak, tannin, acidity, that enhances the wonderful vintage of

2005. A wine you won’t forget. 100% malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels, 18 months in new French oak barrels and no

clarification, no filtrations. Supple, sweet and long, you have to taste it to believe it.

Awards for BODEGAS TABULA:

Bodegas Tábula wines have never been to the U.S. before.

All the wines of Bodegas Tábula scored from 88 to 94 points with the prestigious GUIA PEÑIN of Spain.

Bodegas Tabula is situated in Olivares del

Duero, in the heart of the D.O. Their terrific

wines are mostly made from Tempranillo (also

known as Tinta del Pais o Tinto Fino in this

area).

The hand pick harvest and the double

selection of grapes in both field and winery

ensures that only the very best grapes end up

in the oak fermentation tanks. Malolactic

fermentation also takes place in French oak

barrels, giving the wines a special elegance

and complexity.

Tabula wines have definitely been called to be

a legend!

DOLORES PROMESAS CELLAR; Denominación de Origen Jumilla:

DOLORES PROMESAS 2007 is a terrific blend of 50% Alicante Bouschet (Garnacha Tintorera), 25% Monastrell and 25% Syrah. The

different varieties are made separately, and then blended creating a very well structured, concentrated and very aromatic wine. It

boasts elegant red fruits and spices; vibrant and full-flavored, with floral notes and a blackberry finish.

Dolores Promesas is a very famous fashion firm in

Spain that just entered the wine business.

In the past, Dolores Promesas has been very

successful at marketing women in Spain, and they

are getting ready to enter the American market

with the same approach. The truth is, many

famous actresses, actors and musicians in Spain

have become faithful adorers of Dolores Promesas

fashion, and they are loving this first wine from

the slates. A definitive step up from the previous vintage, Solpost 2004!

SOLPOST FRESC 2007 is a blend of 80% Garnacha, 10% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon; Solpost Fresc is the little brother of

Solpost, but it comes from the same old vineyards from Cellers Sant Rafel estate, and it doesn’t taste like a ‘little’ brother at all!

Sauvignon. Drink now through 2015.”

BODEGAS PINUAGA; Vino de la Tierra de Castilla:

Xavi Penyes’ family has been in the wine making

business since the late 1800’s.

His unique estate is located not too far from the

Mediterranean Sea and in a perfect valley that

appears to have been created for grape growing.

Around the winery (also Xavi family’s home), the

mountains have been worked for ages to create

different levels or terraces, with two or three rows

of vines, here called “terrases”. It is a battle

against the mountain that the people from

Montsant and Priorat won many centuries ago.

The farm was built in the late 1700’s.

Limited production. Boutique winery.

PINUAGA LA SENDA 2007 (old vines) is a blend of Merlot and Tempranillo that shows the wonderful aromas of Pinuaga’s terroir as

in the rest of this boutique winery’s wines. A fruit forward, intense and very attractive wine. PINUAGA NATURE TEMPRANILLO 2007 (old vines) has an immense amount of both black and red fruit (and even some

blueberries), and a mix of other aromas like incense, earth and spices that are enough to make it complex and really interesting.

PINUAGA TEMPRANILLO 2005 (old vines) goes from the floral notes to the very ripe strawberries, black plums skin, spices (black

pepper, thyme, licorice…) and underbrush aromas. In the mouth it is very pleasant with intense and firm tannins but without being

aggressive.

Awards for BODEGAS PINUAGA:

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, February 2009: PINUAGA LA SENDA 2007 – 88 Points: BEST VALUES OF SPAIN. PINUAGA NATURE 2007 – 89 Points: BEST VALUES OF SPAIN. PINUAGA TEMPRANILLO 2005 – 90+ Points.

THE SEATTLE TIMES – MAY 2008: “Pinuaga Nature 2006. From 35 year old vines, this fragrant wine conjures up

Mediterranean herbs, tanned lather, moist earth and wild berries.”THE SEATTLE TIMES – MAY 2008: “Pinuaga 2004

Tempranillo. The big brother to Pinuaga Nature, this ramps up the alcohol (to 14.5%) and flavors to match. Dark and

oaky, it rolls through red and black berries, forest undergrowth, mint and chocolate.” Paul Gregutt is a Columnist and Contributing Editor for The Wine Enthusiast.

It is true that inside Vino de la Tierra de Castilla, the possibilities

of wines, wineries, climates, soils and wine making philosophies

are endless. Bodegas Pinuaga belongs to the Pinuaga family,

wine makers for over 200 years. In the lands of Toledo, among

the “encinas”, the Mediterranean oak, Esther Pinuaga and her

family make these impressive wines, full of Castilla character,

but modern and surprising. Limited production. Boutique

winery.

All the vines are at least 40 years old and bush planted (“pie

franco”).

FINCA LOS ALJIBES; Vino de la Tierra de Castilla:

VIÑA ALJIBES BLANCO 2008 (50% Chardonnay, 50% Sauvignon Blanc) is a delicious wine that shows enough deep aromas and

freshness to captivate everyone’s attention. Ripe and intense, but crisp and sharp at the same time. VIÑA ALJIBES ROSÉ 2008 (100% Syrah) has a spectacular nose of raspberries, wild strawberries and lilacs. The idea of sweetness in

the wine that you might get from the nose disappears immediately in the mouth, when it becomes dry and structured, with a hint

of minerals. The finish is very fresh with hints of mint.

ALJIBES 2004 (45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 25% Cabernet Franc) shows ripe red and black fruit, perfectly balanced

with fine oak and spices. In the mouth the acidity is perfect, and the ripe tannins make this wine elegant, persistent and give full

mouth feeling.

SELECTUS 2005 is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and it is no coincidence that the most

prestigious wine critic of Spain (Peñin), included it in his list of the Best Wines of Spain 2009. Just incredible, like pure velvet.

Awards for LOS ALJIBES: Aljibes Rose 2007 – BEST ROSE VINO DE LA TIERRA DE ESPAÑA in February 2008. 90 POINTS WITH WINE LIBRARY TV. Aljibes 2004 –BEST RED VINO DE LA TIERRA DE ESPAÑA in February 2008.

Aljibes 2003 – 90 POINTS ROBERT PARKER’S WINE ADVOCATE: “The 2003 Aljibes, which spent 9 months in new French and

American oak, is composed of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. It could easily pass as a Bordeaux impersonator.

Dark ruby-colored, it offers up an excellent bouquet of pain grille, vanilla bean, and spicy black currants. On the palate it presents a

supple-textured personality with generous quantities of black fruit flavors, excellent balance, ripe tannins, and a long, pure finish.

This outstanding value should continue to evolve for 4-6 years and drink well through 2020.”

Selectus 2005 – BEST WINES OF SPAIN 2009 by Jose Peñin.

At their amazing 1,900 acre estate, Los Aljibes have a

black-coated pure Spanish horse stud farm, more than

120 acres are dedicated to olive groves, and more

than 550 acres dedicated to vineyards where they

grow more than 14 different varieties for both

commercial and experimental use. There are also 290

acres of beautiful countryside, and still more

dedicated to the cultivation of different grains.

The estate is located in Chinchilla de Montearagon, at

more than 2,900 ft. The climate is very extreme, with

hot dry summers and bitterly cold winters. The soils

are poor and not very deep, perfect to make the vines

produce the best quality grapes. Los Aljibes production

is 300,000 bottles a year.

MANUEL MANZANEQUE; Vino de Pago Denominación Origen Finca Élez:

MANUEL MANZANEQUE 2005 (70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Tempranillo, 15% Merlot) has big aromas of raspberries,

blackberries, cassis, and behind the fruit: sabina tree (a kind of cypress tree that grows in this area, some of them around the

winery are over 1,000 years old…), rosemary, juniper, liquorice, VERY COMPLEX.

MANUEL MANZANEQUE CHARDONNAY 2007 offers roasted coffee, vanilla, mangos, apple and floral hints of orange blossom,

rosemary and fennel. It is fresh, balanced and dense.

MANUEL MANZANEQUE SELECCION 2005 (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Tempranillo, 10% Merlot) has ripe red fruit: raspberries,

currants, and strawberries. Some floral hints like violets over fine toasted aromas from the oak (cocoa, toffee), rosemary and some

mineral hints. Gentle in the mouth with nice round tannins.

MANUEL MANZANEQUE ESCENA 2004 (100% Tempranillo) offers very strong terroir aromas, mineral, powerful personality, very

ripe berries and fruit (cherries, blackberries, raspberries, currant). It is very well balanced with the character of toasted new French

barrels. Long finish with cocoa, coffee and chocolate.

Awards for MANUEL MANZANEQUE:

MANUEL MANZANEQUE has won many awards all throughout the world for his wines, but his greatest achievement is to be the

first of only 5 VINO DE PAGO in Spain.

Manuel Manzaneque has dedicated his whole life to the theater, acting, directing and producing. In 1992 he produced and

directed “El Quijote”, which premiered in New York City as “The Man from La Mancha”. He was born in a land of wine and he

never forgot it. 30 years ago he started planting vines in La Mancha in the old village of El Bonillo. At an altitude of more than

3,500 ft, it is one of the highest estates in Europe. Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines

surround the beautiful winery, built as an old Venta Manchega, with its interior patio and white-washed walls. Today,

Manuel Manzaneque is one of just five ‘Vino de Pago’s’ in Spain, the highest quality achievement of Spanish viticulture, which means that he owns a Denomination of Origen for the winery: DO Finca Elez. Manuel Manzaneque was the first one to get this classification in Spain.

CASTRO BAROÑA; Denominación de Origen Rias Baixas:

LAGAR DO CASTELO 2007 (100% Albariño) has great aromas of peach, melon, herbs, mineral and, of course, the typical ‘saltiness’

that any good Albariño must have. Selected as the best Albariño of the region in 2006 in a blind tasting that the government of

Galicia puts together every year.

Awards for BODEGAS LAGAR DO CASTELO:

LAGAR DE CASTELO was selected as the BEST ALBARIÑO of Rias Baixas in 2007. This is a 30 year old blind tasting contest in the

region of Galicia. It is the best award that an Albariño can obtain.

From old vines of San Martin de Meis, in the heart of the Albariño country in

Galicia, Bodega Castro Barona created this Albariño, half way between tradition

and the most modern technology. Albariño grapes’ quality is exceptional, its

origin is probably from central Europe, but it has been cultivated in Galicia for

ages. They need a fresh and rather humid environment. Their wines are complex

and structured, fruity and floral, but also herbaceous and mineral.

Rias Baixas DO situated on the northern most border of Portugal and Spain,

belongs to a very special area, where the Atlantic Ocean and a Mediterranean

sun schedule create the perfect environment in which to grow Albariño grapes.

BODEGAS CENTRO ESPAÑOLAS; Denominación de Origen La Mancha:

FUENTE DEL RITMO TEMPRANILLO 2007 (100% Cencibel – Tempranillo –) is a traditional Cencibel (that’s how locals call

Tempranillo in La Mancha) with no oak aging, just fruit, earthiness and spices from the fruit.

FUENTE DEL RITMO MACABEO 2007 (100% Macabeo) This is one of the traditional white varieties of the region, that makes very

fresh, crisp, herbal and fruity wines; perfect for the good weather.

ALLOZO JOVEN 2007 (100% Tempranillo). More complex and intense than the Tempranillo from “Fuente del Ritmo” vineyard,

basically do to the age of the vines. Very fruity, floral and fresh.

ALLOZO MACABEO 2008 (100% Macabeo). This is one of the traditional white varieties of the region, that makes very fresh, crisp,

herbal and fruity wines; perfect for the good weather. As with the Tempranillos, Allozo wines come from older vines and the wines

are more intense in aromas and structured in the mouth.

ALLOZO CRIANZA 2004 (100% Tempranillo). This is the best selling wine from Bodegas Centro Españolas. It has a perfect balance

between the oak and the fruit and it shows no hard edges at all.

ALLOZO RESERVA 2003 (100% Tempranillo) is one of the reservas with the most reginal awards in La Mancha. Intense, complex

and well balanced, it offers an exceptional value; just like all the Centro Españolas wines.

In 1986 a group of entrepreneurs and a wine maker got together to make a dream come true: high

quality wines in La Mancha with different personality and character from the rest of this, the biggest D.O.

in Spain and the biggest viticulture area in the world. Bodegas Centro Españolas was born and so was

their big brand, ALLOZO. And, of course, their main grape would be Tempranillo.
