Walmart Inc. is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets, discount department stores, and grocery stores.

Walmart is the world’s largest company by revenue – approximately $480B according to Fortune Global 500 list in 2016 – as well as the largest private employer in the world with 2.3 million employees.Under the leadership of Marc Lore, head of e-commerce for Walmart and former CEO of Jet.com, the retail giant has made bold moves in snapping up e-commerce start-ups across footwear, men’s fashion and potentially subscription boxes and other categories. Walmart’s E-commerce organization is broken into two subgroups; Labs and Retail and in 2017 posted a 44% increase in e-commerce sales to $11.5 billion across all its U.S. sites.

Constantly battling the other giants, retention issues can quickly arise. This paired with Walmart’s ambitious growth goals, having the best tech talent in Silicon Valley is a necessity. With an existing high-level career framework from their home office, they identified the need for something more robust for technology roles, which is 80% of the population. Other challenges included having no great methods to showcase career options within e-commerce (navigating across all dimensions is important) and the social shift to managing more multi-generationals and millennials.

After completing initial pilots in 2017 with eCommerce Labs & eCommerce Retail (formally Jet.com) a strategic initiative was implemented. A Category Specialist role was created specifically to lead the effort, which was launched in April 2018.
