Project Overview

In November of 1942, the USS Juneau was sunk by Japanese torpedoes during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, causing 687 soldiers to perish on the cruiser that day. New Jersey’s Hudson County wanted to honor those who lost their lives on the USS Juneau, and they achieved this goal by converting the warehouse that built the cruiser into an emergency command center for the entire state. The 80,000 sq. ft. facility is located on a peninsula between the Passaic and Hackensack rivers, and was

dormant for decades due to severe water damage that rusted its exterior terra cotta tile.

Local architects The Musial Group were tasked with rehabilitating the building on behalf of New Jersey’s Office of Emergency Management. They chose a combination of metal panels and 41,190 sq. ft. of our double-panel UniQuad® system.

“We chose the UniQuad system because of its spanning capabilities and relatively high R-value comparable

“The UniQuad® system, in concert with a metal panel system, afforded us the ability to provide an energy efficient building skin while expressing the historic structure.

to other similar systems,” said Project Architect Noel Musial Jr. of The Musial Group. “The UniQuad system, in concert with a metal panel system, afforded us the ability to provide an energy efficient building skin while expressing the historic structure.” The UniQuad system was combined with other sustainable strategies, such as energy recovery and geothermal heating and cooling, in the hopes to earn the Juneau Memorial Center LEED Silver certification.

The UniQuad system is an assembly of two independent translucent insulated panels, resulting in one integrated and high-performance daylighting system. It is the only system that can provide indefinite building envelope protection with its removable exterior glazing feature. The panels are scalable and can be configured with various features while maintaining its integrity, including: additional insulation, Class A fire-rated roof assembly, sound reduction, dynamic shading, additional structure performance, and even military forced entry resistance. The system is joined by a mechanically interlocking connection, and eliminates the need for vulnerable adhesives. This adds durability as well as even light distribution with the system’s patented tight-cell technology.

The Juneau Memorial Center was specified in clear matte over clear matte glazing, and was integrated with metal panels and vision glass. The UniQuad panels serve all four sides of the warehouse and the garage doors as well for a seamless, flush look.

“The new building skin, of which the UniQuad was a major component, implemented a consistent and straightforward approach that highlighted the existing structure while protecting it with an easy to maintain material,” said Musial. “Using the UniQuad for the entirety of the garage doors provided continuity of the building envelope and a monolithic reading of the building’s materiality.”
