The Challenge Langage Energy Centre is the first large power station to be built in the UK for five years. SA Roofing Ltd, which is a family run company, supplies high quality, but cost effective roofing solutions for industrial and commercial applications across the South West of England. Unfortunately during the building’s construction, damage was done to the roof, so SA Roofing contacted Plastic Surgeon, Fine Finishers, to come up with a solution for its repair, feeling that this was the most sustainable option. The challenge for Plastic Surgeon was to repair two corrugated silver panels at a dizzying height of 140 feet up a 220 feet chimney, while suspended from a crane in a three tonne man basket. Plastic Surgeon needed to work closely with the customer due to the weather and wind conditions limiting the availability of the crane, so it was arranged the Finishers could be onsite at short notice when circumstances permitted. The Solution

The three by two foot panels were badly punctured and dented, but Plastic Surgeon was able to save them by recreating exactly the appearance and profile of the original corrugated effect. The Finishers filled the holes and dents, which were then sanded before being sprayed with a bespoke paint colour matched and mixed by the team. The final lacquer coating applied ensured the repair work will last in the adverse weather conditions expected at such a height.

While the roller applied Screed Coat can be colour matched to any masonry, or have a fine grit finish applied to it while wet, in this case the product was specified in white and used to make the sills and other features blend in.

The ResultSA Roofing closely inspected the completed work, sending its representative up in the basket in order to do so, confirming the standard of workmanship and its ability to keep the weather at bay.

Sustainable RepairsAt the same time as providing clients with a comprehensive cosmetic repair service addressing virtually every type of product and substrate, Plastic Surgeon is also addressing important aspects of the sustainability agenda. For while the company’s ethos of ‘repairing rather than replacing’ represents a saving of approximately £3 for every pound spent, this approach also significantly reduces waste going to landfill and therefore helps cut a customer’s carbon footprint. Uniquely, Plastic Surgeon has developed its VisibilITy software which translates each Finisher’s job report, sent from their hand-held computer, into the equivalent weight and other statistics on a data base that participating customers can utilise for their own sustainability reporting.
