Ambos claim lives are at riskBY CHAD VAN ESTROP

Fair go: Paramedics Jason Tosch (left) and Stephen Brandon (second from right) are calling for betterworking conditions. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

‘From my experience, in thepast two months there hasbeen at least one code 1 jobwhere there has been a delayin dispatch.’ — Stephen Brandon

CASEY paramedics say lives are at risk due toover-worked staff and under-resourcing in thearea.

Stephen Brandon, who works in Narre War-ren and Berwick, said only three ambulanceswere available between Dandenong and War-ragul after 9pm each day.

‘‘All you have is Berwick, Beaconsfield andPakenham. At the moment I don’t think theycater for the demand,’’ he said.

Mr Brandon said dispatch times to code 1jobs, which involve life-threatening condi-tions, were also a problem.

‘‘From my experience, in the past twomonths there has been at least one code 1 jobwhere there has been a delay in dispatch.”

Ambulance Victoria statistics show 90 percent of code 1 jobs between July 2011 andOctober 2012 in Berwick were responded to inunder 20 minutes, Beaconsfield in less than 23and Narre Warren in under 21.

The government benchmark for respondingto a code 1 job is 15 minutes.

Mr Brandon said a 25- minute delay in dis-patch to a code 1 job in Narre Warren earlierthis year could have been life threatening afterthe patient was found to be unconscious whenparamedics arrived.

Paramedic Jason Tosch, who works in NarreWarren, Berwick and Pakenham, said staffingshortfalls at the Cranbourne station left itunmanned on three occasions in the past twoweeks.

He said response times tripled, from sixminutes to 20 minutes, as a result.

Mr Brandon also criticised a proposal by

Ambulance Victoria to outsource graduatedriver training.

Under the proposal, a five-day driver induc-tion program will be cut next year, forcinggraduate paramedics to pay for their owntraining.

“I couldn’t imagine police driver trainingbeing outsourced so why should ours?” MrBrandon said.

Ambulance Victoria’s metro east regionalmanager Cath Anderson did not responddirectly to questions on outsourcing drivertraining.

‘‘We are continually looking at ways to buildon and improve the delivery of our training,’’she said.

Ambulance Victoria had placed ‘‘new orupgraded ambulances’’ in Cranbourne,

Lyndhurst and Endeavour Hills over the past12 months. Asked about response times, MsAnderson said AV had made changes to itsreferral system “to ensure [AV] were bestplaced to respond immediately to life threaten-ing emergencies’’.

Ambulance Employees Union state secretarySteve McGhie said paramedics’ concerns overpay and working conditions could cause up to1500 to walk away from their jobs in the nextfive years.

It is expected an independent arbitrator willbe appointed to try to break a seven-monthdeadlock in pay negotiations when the AEUand the state government meet this week.

Ms Anderson said AV wanted to “identifyoptions which reward paramedics’’ in order toconclude pay negotiations as soon as possible.

Re: Grand Berwick galleryplan unveiledA stand-alone art gallery fails to include otherforms of art in the City of Casey, eg music, theatre, orchestral and dance, which have an equal need of asuitable venue.

Surely a well planned, multi-use facility whichincorporates all forms of art, including visual artforms, would be a more efficient use of councilfunds and meet the needs of all Casey artists.

Re: Dogged legal pursuit leadsback to VCATThis is totally ridiculous! If the dog has bittensomeone then yes it needs to be put down, but thisdog has shown no aggression and this legislation isbeing taken out of context by councils and must becontrolled. Stop this madness — people are losingtheir loving pets!

Doug Sethton (via web)

This law needs to be abolished.Breed-specific legislation is bad enough, but to

seize and kill a well-behaved dog based on how itlooks is irrational, unscientific and certainly cruel

to both dog and family. There is little differencebetween this and judging people by skin colour.

Most of us have risen above such superstitionand discrimination.

When will our government?Pete (via web)

What do I think? I think that after so much timewasted and money lost the people at CardiniaCouncil are just too cowardly to admit theyare wrong.

Cheryl (via web)

Another horrendous story of injustice and persecu-tion. Hope and pray this resilient and heroic mangets his dog back.

Marlene Weale (via web)

Stop wasting money Cardinia — Rocket is not adangerous dog.

He has not bitten anyone. It is so unfair to con-tinue to kill dogs on ‘looks’.

Should we now start to lock people up becausewe do not like the way they look and state they aredangerous?

This law is idiotic — so disappointing to see that

Cardinia is going along with a foolish decision. Please let common sense prevail and releaseRocket.

Don’t waste any more ratepayers’ funds please.Charlotte (via web)

Please send Rocket back to his family where hereally belongs.

They have no reason to hold him since he’s neverattacked anyone.

You would have to hold every single dog inVictoria on the premise of maybe they’ll attacksomeone.

There’s no reason not to send him home, enoughis enough.

If he hasn’t attacked anyone while in custodythan he isn’t going to.

Duh.Lorrie Miller (via web)

Councils have been given too much power overthings outside of their area of concern.

Breed-specific legislation is a disgusting travestyof justice as was slavery, ageism, racism and all theother isms.

Statue story ‘bit suss’BY CHAD VAN ESTROP

‘I can’t see the point ofhaving the statue inHigh Street.’

— Peter Sweeney

FRESH criticism has been levelledagainst plans to erect a statue ofGreek Olympian Spyridon Louisin High Street, Berwick.

The statue was commissioned in2011 to represent ‘‘an example ofthe Olympic spirit, ideal and mate-ship’’ between Berwick OlympianEdwin Flack and Louis. The mencompeted in the 1896 Olympicmarathon.

But a Berwick resident says thefriendship is fictional with ‘‘nofactual evidence’’ to suggest thepair were mates.

Peter Sweeney, the author ofEdwin Flack: The Lion of Athens— a biography of Flack based onhis memoirs — questioned thefriendship. ‘‘There is nothing inFlack’s memoirs to suggest thatthere was a close friendshipbetween the two.’’

Mr Sweeney states in his bookthat Louis was arrested and jailedfor forgery in 1925. He was later

found innocent of the charges. ‘‘Ijust wonder what the real reason isfor the statue. It seems a bit suspi-cious; there is something missing,’’Mr Sweeney said.

He said the statue should not beplaced in High Street as it had norelevance to the area.

‘‘I can’t see the point of havingthe statue in High Street. It doesn’thave much to do with Berwick.’’

George Panagakis, the vice-president of the Australian Hel-lenic Organisation in Support ofthe Olympic Spirit and Ideal — theorganisation responsible for thestatue — said his organisation washappy to listen to residents’ con-cerns.

‘‘At the end of the day, we

want everybody to be happy.’’Mr Panagakis said AHOSOSI

would pay for the statue with thehelp of a $25,000 state govern-ment grant. The statue is expectedto cost $39,000.

Mr Panagakis defended theLouis-Flack friendship and saidthe statue’s purpose was topromote harmony between Aus-tralia and Greece.

‘‘The whole ideal [of the statue]is to promote friendship andmulticulturalism.’’

Mr Panagakis said the associ-ation would meet the council thisweek to discuss the plan for thestatue.

A Berwick residents’ group saidCasey Council had ‘‘lost touch’’with the community, after backfli-pping on its original decision toplace the statue in Edwin FlackReserve. Residents, Ratepayersand Friends of Berwick Villagepresident Annette Aldersea said itwas clear the community did notwant the statue in High Street.

Chinese check-in:Aziz on a missionBY CATHERINE WATSON

DEPUTY mayor Sam Aziz has gone to Chinato seek out Chinese entrepreneurs to invest inbusiness opportunities in Casey.

The trip is a truncated version of a grandertrade mission proposed by Cr Aziz last yearthat was to have included the mayor andCEO, with invitations to the premier andrepresentatives of Cardinia Shire andMonash University.

Instead, Cr Aziz will tag on to a privatelyorganised business mission for his five-daytrip. He did not respond to the Weekly’squestions on what he planned to do in China.

But in a press release from the council hestated he was visiting China to ‘‘begin build-ing relationships with the government andbusiness sector to facilitate investment andpotential business opportunities for Chinesenationals’’.

He stated the Casey-Cardinia regionfeatured a number of major investmentopportunities, including an airport for the

south-east, civic and commercial precinctdevelopment in Narre Warren, aninternational-standard ice rink and theBunyip food belt.

In December, councillors voted unanim-ously to send the delegation of three to soundout Chinese entrepreneurs to invest in public-private partnerships with the council.

The original mission was suggested byCr Aziz, who nominated himself for the trip, although in the past he has been a vocalopponent of councillors travelling overseasand interstate at ratepayer expense.

Last month councillors voted to modifythe mission after a report from councilofficers suggested that finding Chineseinvestors might be a matter best left to theexperts.

The officers’ report recommended thecouncil should engage with China throughstate government opportunities and by send-ing a single representative on the privatetrade delegation to gauge initial investorinterest in Casey.

Cameras candid on litterbugsBY CHAD VAN ESTROP

Pig sty: Illegaldumping of unusableitems at charity storesis a headache forSalvos’ employeeVicki Haines.Picture: Wayne Hawkins

CHARITY stores in Casey will be given newweapons in their fight against illegal dumping.

Under a state government initiativeannounced last week , four stores in Casey willbe armed with surveillance systems, fences andsigns to deter the dumping of unwantedgoods.

But some store managers have expressedconcern the new measures may just transferthe problem.

Manager of the St Vincent de Paul store inCranbourne, Kim Ronaldson, said a fence, tobe erected this week, may not be a deterrent.

‘‘We are thinking that the fence may justtransfer the problem to the nature strip.’’

Ms Ronaldson said the Cranbourne storewas one of the worst affected in the state withvolunteers spending up to four hours siftingthrough unwanted items on Monday morn-ings.

‘‘On the weekends we get a lot of furnituredumped, as well as a lot of unusable clothesand rubbish.’’

St Vincent de Paul retail operations man-ager Michael Rawlinson said the bill fordisposing of unusable donations across Casey

and Cardinia would top $500,000 in 2013.Salvos sustainability and waste manager

Donald Munro said the Narre Warren storewould trial CCTV under the new program.

‘‘Because this program is a pilot it will test ifcameras are able to work in insolation.’’

Mr Munro said Salvo stores had spent$2.3 million this financial year disposing ofunwanted items.

The manger of a Pakenham op shop, whichmissed out on funding under the trial, said

volunteers spent at least an hour cleaning upunwanted items each morning.

She hoped the new program would educatepeople on illegal dumping and suggestedincentives to encourage people to use landfills.

The first phase of the program will provide$500,000 to 38 charity stores acrossMelbourne. Environment Minister RyanSmith said insights gained from the programwould be used to form the next stage of thecampaign targeting illegal dumping.

It’s easy to be one of the boys, says Russell Robertson. The hard bit is challenging your mates when the talk becomesmisogynist. CATHERINE WATSON reports.

Making his mark: Former Demons star Russell Robertson is providing a lead in the campaign against family violence. Picture: Scott McNaughton

In his prime, Demon Russell Robertson couldchange the trajectory of the game with amiraculous snap at goal or a nerveless set

shot from 50 metres out. But the 200-gameveteran says that in his 13 years of playing foot-ball, the most courageous act he saw happenedoff the field.

It happened on a Demons’ footy trip to Thai-land at the end of the season, 10 or more yearsago. It was typical of such affairs: 40-odd young-ish blokes hanging out, lots of boozing, lots ofwomen — or at least lots of blokes talking aboutwomen and sex. In the middle of one of thesesessions, Clint Bizzell — a hard man of theMelbourne team — stood up and said, “This isridiculous. I don’t want to do it any more.” Andwalked out.

Until then, Robertson had thought what theywere doing was just what any young bloke woulddo if he got half the chance, but Bizzell’scomment made him think again. ‘‘By the next dayI agreed wholeheartedly with him and we neverhad a footy trip like that again,’’ he says.

Ten years after that pivotal footy trip, Robert-son is a sometime musician, model and realityTV star, a full-time AFL development manager, afamily man and the face of a new campaign – theChallenge project – to tackle family violenceacross Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong.

The state government has given funding of$600,000 over three years for the project torecruit leaders in fields as diverse as sports clubs, faith communities and ethnic associations tospeak up in their own communities against male

perceptions of females that lead to violenceagainst women and children.

Robertson believes the campaign is right onthe money. He says it’s only by blokes speakinghonestly to their mates that we’ll see real change, man by man, boy by boy. And change is vital: lastyear police recorded more than 6000 reports offamily violence in the three municipalities. Therewere more than 3200 reports in Casey alone.

Ask him why his attitude to women is differentfrom that of so many football stars and he creditsit to having three sisters.

“I didn’t like the fact that they live in a worldwhere they have to be afraid of what men mightdo to them. I don’t think twice if I want to go to asupermarket at night. I can park in a deserted carpark and have no fear of being assaulted. Theydon’t have that freedom.

“Men are lucky to have been born with thestrength to defend themselves. Unfortunately, sometimes they use that strength against peoplewho are not as strong.’’

In his role as an AFL development manager, hetalks to footballers all over Australia and to boysin local schools and is constantly amazed at theirattitudes to females. “It’s interesting how archaicour thinking is and how impressionable youngmen are. Boys think of their fathers as heroes.Everything my father did I watched. Imagine theimpact on one of these young kids of watchinghis father bashing his mother.”

A former Tasmanian, he has a special link withCasey, having married a Cranbourne girl andsettled in the area. He says there is no doubt

that family relationships are demanding.“After a long day at work, it’s hard to read a

book to my son or go out and play with himwhen I’d rather sit on the couch and watch sporton TV. Married life is challenging every day.

“I played football for 13 years and I had a ball.I don’t care if my son knows about that. I do carethat he knows me as a respectful, honourableman who always looked after his mother.”

One of his biggest challenges as an AFLdevelopment manager is teaching over-indulged,over-idolised AFL footballers to treat womenrespectfully in a culture that often treats themwith contempt. If he ever feels daunted by thetask, he only needs to think back to the exampleof his teammate on that footy trip. ‘‘To my mind,Clint was a hero that day. He stood up in one ofthe hardest forums — hanging out with his mates— and said ‘This is bullshit’.

“We have to have the courage to stand upindividually and say ‘I don’t like this this’ andwalk away. It’s baby steps for stopping familyviolence but perhaps my example will changesomeone else as Clint’s example changed me.

“The easiest thing is to be one of the boys. Youcan make a change by simply standing up forwhat you believe. That’s the hard bit. That’s whatbeing a hero is.”

United front: Rod Bezanovic says there is aconnection between family violence and animalcruelty. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

Crying foul overculture of crueltyROD Bezanovic describes it as a light bulbmoment. He was listening to a talk by DaveSheppard, the former head of Casey’s familyviolence unit, and he suddenly saw theconnection with his own work as team leaderof Casey’s local laws department.

“We knock on the same doors, we speak tothe same people and we do the same sort ofwork,’’ he said.

Casey has the largest number of familyviolence cases in Victoria and the highestnumber of animal welfare cases, Mr Bezan-ovic says. ‘‘There is a connection betweenfamily violence and animal cruelty. If thereare pets in the family, they are invariably usedas a tool in a situation of family violence.”

The realisation of that connection led himto join the council’s men’s action group and tobecome an ambassador for White Ribbon, thecampaign against family violence. Now histeam members are trained to recognise thesigns of family violence when they are out inthe community. They can report to the policeand can provide supportive evidence if neces-sary. The more pairs of eyes the better.”

After 30 years in law enforcement, he saysbecoming involved with the campaign againstfamily violence is one of the most rewardingthings he’s done. “This is something I do toprevent harm to the people of ourcommunity.”

Colleague Nathan Islip had a similarepiphany. “I’m a father, a friend, a colleagueand I’m a man. Really I only need to thinkabout my seven-year-old daughter to resolvethat I need to do something.”

Working as an urban designer with thecouncil, he was struck by the fact that manywomen and elderly people felt stranded intheir homes.

Becoming a White Ribbon ambassador hasmeant going out and talking to boys andyoung men but also, more uncomfortably, challenging his own friends at times whenthey talk out of anger or frustration.

“I don’t know how much of a difference mylittle actions have made but if I can changeone person I’ve achieved something exciting.”

App help for victims of sexual assault

New avenues: Carolyn Worth says victims will now beable to anonymously report their ordeal online and viasmartphone. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

BY DANIEL TRAN

VICTIMS of sexual assault will now be able toreport their ordeal anonymously through a newsmartphone app.

Developed by the South Eastern CentreAgainst Sexual Assault, the app will give victimsan outlet to come forward if they are not com-fortable reporting their assault to police.

Centre manager Carolyn Worth hopes the appwill make reporting sexual assault less dauntingfor victims.

‘‘One out of a hundred people will tell some-one they’ve been assaulted and that’s not evenofficial reports,’’ she said. ‘‘So what we’re hopingis that people will be comfortable with being ableto report information anonymously.’’

Victoria does not have anonymous reportingprotocols and victims who want to come forwardmust give their name. Ms Worth said victimsoften found it daunting to speak about theirassault to police.

‘‘Lots of people either drop out of that processor they don’t want to do that in the first place.

‘‘People think their issue’s not that importantor they were in some ways to blame because ofwhat they were doing and they might be judged.Sometimes people aren’t that clear what is sexualassault.’’

With the new app, known as SARA (SexualAssault Reporting Anonymously), users can fillout a report via their iPhone, Android device oron the website.

The information, which will not be identifi-able, will be collected by the South EasternCentre Against Sexual Assault so it can identifythe frequency of different types of assaults, hotspots and other trends.

The data will then be passed on to the police soa more accurate understanding of offences iscompiled. A further option will enable users to becontacted by the centre. Information collected isdeleted regularly.

The app was inspired by the disappearance ofIrish woman Jill Meagher, who went missingfrom Brunswick in September last year andwhose body was later found in a shallow grave.

The app was created with the support of youngwomen who wanted an avenue to reportanonymously.

Ms Worth expected the reports made by theapp to hold the same weight as those made inperson. ‘‘If you’re not going to report anyway, officially, this gives you another option.’’

INBRIEF

Fijian centre approvedA Fijian Indian group can go ahead with a Hindu

community centre and place of worship in Narre

Warren North after the Victorian Civil and

Administrative Tribunal rejected residents’

objections. Casey Council last year granted a

permit to the Shri Sanantan Dharam Society of

Victoria to convert a dwelling in Hallam Road North

for prayers, Hindi and music classes and other

gatherings for women and senior citizens.

Residents asked the tribunal to overturn the

appeal on the grounds that the centre was

unsuitable for a low-density residential site. In her

decision, VCAT member Elizabeth Bensz said the

society, many of whose 230 members come from

Casey, had operated from a converted house in

Dandenong for many years with no complaints

from neighbours. A maximum of 80 people will be

able to visit the centre at any one time.

CEO can keep workingCasey councillors last week blocked an attempt to

have CEO Mike Tyler suspended from duties until a

court case against him is settled. Cr Rosalie

Crestani tried to raise the matter as urgent

business but councillors voted eight to three

against discussing it. Mr Tyler has been

summonsed to appear in Dandenong Magistrates

Court on April 18 charged with two breaches of the

Local Government Act in that he allegedly

committed council resources and funds on a

matter in which he had a personal interest without

notifying the mayor or council. The maximum

penalty for each offence is about $16,900.

Growers switch tofarmers’ markets

Hard row to hoe: Shona Crawford is looking foroptions for selling the produce grown on herCasey farm.

BY CATHERINE WATSON

ONCE, if their carrots weren’t quite straight orthe beetroots not perfectly round, Pearcedale’sShona and David Crawford had no option but toplough them into the ground. These days theirimperfect produce finds a ready home at farmers’markets around the city.

Like many of the region’s growers and farmers, the Crawfords, who grow smaller bunched itemssuch as Dutch carrots, beetroot and rhubarb, have had to look at new marketing tools inresponse to drastic changes in Australia’s foodsupply chain.

While the Crawfords still sell the bulk of theirproduce through the wholesale market, in recentyears they have turned to farmers’ markets wherethe customers are less fixated on visual perfectionthan the supermarkets.

Mrs Crawford estimates she has about 1000customers a month at five farmers’ marketsaround Melbourne.

Mrs Crawford was one of about 60 people at aCasey forum on starting a south-eastern food

hub last month. She said the biggest challenge forsmall-to-medium growers was the squeeze thetwo big supermarkets put on farmers’ profit mar-gins.

The other challenge is looming: later this year,Melbourne’s wholesale fruit and vegetable mar-ket shifts from Footscray to Epping.

‘‘From Pearcedale to Epping is a hell of a longdrive, especially coming back in peak hour. It’sjust not going to be viable for us,” Mrs Crawfordsaid.

Cardinia grower John Hobson said it madesense to establish a south-eastern food hub. ‘‘Itwould make the process a lot more efficient.’’

Mr Hobson, who grows corn and asparaguson a 25-hectare property, said local growers weredisadvantaged by the distance they had to travelto wholesale markets.

‘‘A lot of growers are on this side of town andmost produce is available here.’’

Mr Hobson, who has scaled down his opera-tions over the past 10 years, said he nowpreferred farmers’ markets.

‘‘We do about two farmers’ markets a week. If

you’ve got the produce you’ll get the customersat farmers’ markets — it’s as simple as that.’’

RESIDENTS, restaurants and retailers would like to buyfresh local produce but they don’t know where to get it.

About 60 growers and others in the food industrywho attended a Cranbourne forum heard that a foodhub could help link producers with buyers. The project, funded by VicHealth and supported by Casey Council, aims to link producers and consumers in the south-eastto improve the lot of both. Local grower Ken Raynersaid he supported such an idea but believed it shouldbe in the affluent middle suburbs. ‘‘We used to sell atthe Berwick market and we couldn’t make any money. It needs to be in Hawthorn or Toorak, where people areprepared to spend on good produce.’’

Astra returns in chic Euro modeEwan Kennedy road tests the latest generation Opel

Going solo: Styling of the German Opel Astra is bang up to date.

The Astra has starred in Australia for almostthree decades, but in various formats. It wasfirst seen here in 1984 as a small car built in

Melbourne by Holden and shared with Nissan, which named its vehicles Pulsar.

Holden broke away from Nissan and began toimport Astras from Germany where they werebuilt by Opel. Holden Astra badges were fittedand the models were a success for many years, until Holden decided it could cut prices by bring-ing in cars from Daewoo in South Korea.

But now Astra is back and this time around istrue to its roots by carrying Opel badges andbeing made in Europe.

Astra models now coming to Australia featurethe latest in Euro chic shapes.

The entry point to the Opel Astra range is thefive-door hatch that is offered in manual andautomatic transmissions in both a 1.4-litreturbo-petrol engine and a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel.

Next up is the Opel Astra Select with a larger1.6 turbo-petrol engine or the 2.0 diesel. Toppingthe range is the Astra Sport, available in 1.6-litre

petrol with manual or automatic transmission. On the road we were impressed by the stable

handling and excellent road-holding of the newOpel Astra. Though Asian car makers areimproving, the Europeans are still in the lead.

Ride comfort is good even on dirt roads. The 1.6-litre petrol engine with an automatic

transmission that we tested typically used six toseven litres per hundred kilometres in countryand motorway driving. This increased to a stillreasonable eight to 10 litres around town.

Prices for the new Opel Astra begin at $23,990for the manual five-door with a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine and go all the way up to $35,990for a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel Tourer wagon. Thisplaces it several thousand dollars above typicalcompetitors. The importers are doing this delib-erately to try and lift Astra away from the crowdby giving it a more upmarket appeal.

Will Opel succeed with this ambitious plan?Only time will tell. Sales have been reasonable inthe early days, but are far from setting the worldon fire.

Cavs pullrug fromCougarsCASEY Cavaliers have throwndown the challenge to the Big Vdivision 2 men’s competition with astunning upset of Keysborough intheir clash at Springers LeisureCentre on Saturday night.

The Cavs won 71-65 to take theirrecord to 3-0 under Stewart Bairdand stamp themselves as a seriouscontender.

‘‘It was certainly a great result forus. We led the whole way, whichwas pleasing,’’ Baird said.

‘‘Our first quarter was good andthen our second quarter was verygood and probably our best allyear; I mean that in terms of build-ing the things that we were workingon.’’

The Cavs’ second quarteronslaught was led by Sean McKin-non, who dominated the boards.Jon Hawes was a constant offensivethreat to finish the match with agame-high 20 points.

The Cougars trimmed the lead tofour points in the third term butthe Cavs again lifted and extendedit out to 10 points by the finalchange. The gallant Cougars keptfighting with Kevin Benn (15points, nine rebounds) and JohnConstance (nine points), who madeseveral long bombs, the catalyst forthe revival.

But the Cavs kept a cool head tostop the challenge and give the Cavsone of their most promising startsto a season in several years.

‘‘In all honesty we have probablyexceeded our expectations — wewanted to go better than 50-50,’’Baird said.

‘‘If you had asked us if we wouldbe 3-0 with one of our wins Keys-borough we might have said itwasn’t realistic. I still think Keys-borough is the benchmark andwhen they are playing at their bestthey are going to be very hard tobeat.’’

The Casey Cavaliers division 2women’s team eclipsed ChelseaGulls 63-45 with Amy McFarlane(15 points) and Leah Swain (14points, 19 rebounds) leading theway.

Alexandra Keates was alsooutstanding for the victors withnine points and 10 rebounds.

The Casey Cavaliers youthleague 2 men were due to playCoburg Giants at Cranbourne Bas-ketball Stadium last night.

Comets show flairto win first-up clash

Strong start: Casey Comets’ SeanMcLaughlan charges down the

field during their win overPeninsula Strikers on Saturday.

CASEY Comets negotiated a toughfirst-up FFV State League 3 South Eastencounter with a 1-0 win over Penin-sula Strikers at Comets Stadium onSaturday.

Despite the Comets suffering anearly blow when Paul Presti left thefield with a groin injury, they domin-ated general possession and squan-dered several early chances.

The Strikers then hit a hiccup of theirown when keeper Steve Eleftheriou leftthe field through injury but HaydenHicks proved an able replacement.

Despite the action packed first-halfthe scoreline read 0-0 when the playerswent to the sheds.

The Comets got a breakthrough inthe 60th minute when Matt Morris-Thomas finished well after some bril-liant lead-up play sliced the Strikers’defence open.

Both sides tired heavily towards theend of the match and despite theComets having several more chanceson goal they could not add to theirscore.

Berwick City recorded a 3-2 victoryover Warragal United with OrlandoMejias, Shane Savanah and PedroSequeira the scorers.

Casey Comets now face a testingaway clash against Heatherton from6pm on Saturday.

Berwick City is on the road at Nun-awading City’s home ground, Mahon-eys Reserve, the match starting at 3pmon Saturday.

Rays stoke up the engine roomBY ROY WARD

Flying Rays: Dandenong Stingrays captain Nathan Foote boots the ball forward in theirvictory over Eastern Ranges. Picture: Gary Sissons

EFFORT can do amazing things. In the Dandenong Stingrays’ case it

took them to a much-needed TAC Cupwin over Eastern Ranges at BayswaterOval on Saturday in front of a large, vocal crowd.

The Stingrays won 20.14 (134) to12.14 (86).

After a tight first term the Stingrayslifted their intensity and their tacklecount, jumping out to a half-time leadand powering to an impressive win.

Stingrays coach Graeme Yeats saidhis players were starting to understandthe level of effort needed to be compet-itive at TAC Cup level.

‘‘I’m really impressed with the waythey worked really hard right from thestart of the game.

‘‘I’m not sure where we are at. We’restill developing the group and stilllearning about the kids and trying toestablish the base acceptance of thework rate required at this level.’’

Yeats said the noticeable increase inthe number of tackles showed theStingrays had lifted their intensity.

‘‘We only had seven or eight tacklesin the first quarter and I think we hadseven or eight tackles inside our for-ward 50-metre line in the second quar-ter.

‘‘So we were able to keep the ballinside our scoring area and obviouslygot more scoring shots from that pres-sure.’’

The Stingrays had winners across the

ground. Dale Gawley, Angus Scott,Clayton McCartney, Jordan Bastinac,Zak Jones and Blake Pearson were

named best players. McCartney kickedfour goals and Jack Soroczynski addedthree.

Bottom age player Tom Lamb wasalso impressive at half-forward, settingup a number of attacks and showingclean hands in the forward line.

‘‘We think we have a really good bal-anced squad, so we never have to relyon any individuals,’’ Yeats said.

‘‘We seek a consistent, across-the-board effort and work rate.’’

Yeats has challenged his players tomaintain their efforts.

‘‘Their talent comes with them, buton the back of hard work you can playwell and set up the things you’re tryingto set up.

‘‘We think we have enough talent. It’s just a matter of utilising that andgetting them to understand that on theback of hard work their talents willshine through.’’

Ranges coach Darren Bewick wasdisappointed in his side and praised theStingrays’ intensity. ‘‘To their creditthey worked really hard and gave us alesson on how you should go about itthrough the midfield. I hope our boyslearn from playing against a good teamand a good midfield.’’

The TAC Cup has a week off thisweekend as Vic Metro and Vic Countrysquads play trial games ahead of thefirst game of the AFL under-18national championships.

No Fevolafor classicTHE Peninsula League looks to havedodged a bullet with Ovens and Mur-ray spearhead Brendan Fevola unlikelyto play in their interleague clash laterthis year.

The Yarrawonga full-forward isscheduled to play a one-off game withRockingham Rams in Western Austra-lia’s Peel League on May 26, meaningthe burly former Carlton star will notplay against the Peninsula League a dayearlier.

But newly appointed PeninsulaLeague coach Stephen Ryan knows theO and M will field a strong outfitdespite the absence of the Narre Warrenproduct.

‘‘They are a very good league, verystrong and have quite a few ex-AFLplayers playing in the league,’’ he said.

The two country powers will clashfor the right to play for the No. 1 rank-ing in country Victoria next year withthe make-up of the Peninsula team to beseverely different to previous years. Theteam was formerly made up of playersfrom the Peninsula, Casey Cardinia andNepean Leagues but this year theMPNFL has split the three leagues’representative outfits.

This means players of the ilk of Ash-ley Eames and Justin Berry will not beavailable to help the Peninsula Leaguedefeat the powerful Ovens and Murrayoutfit which is likely to include formerRichmond players Dean Polo, CraigEdnie and Chris Hyde.

Ryan said he is likely to choose asquad of 40 in the next fortnight beforetrimming the squad down closer to thegame.

He said he is excited at the prospectof coaching the Peninsula League.

‘‘It’s a good opportunity and a goodlearning curve for me,’’ he said.

‘‘It is a good opportunity for me toget to know the rest of the PeninsulaLeague a bit better.

‘‘It is disappointing that they havebroken the team up but I can under-stand where the VCFL is coming frombecause the team might be too strongcoming from three different leagues.’’

The Casey Cardinia League will becoached by Pakenham premiershipmentor Michael ‘Jock’ Holland withCranbourne coach Doug Koop to be hisassistant.

The Casey Cardinia League will clashwith Wimmera Football League atHorsham on May 25.

The Nepean League will clash withHeathcote District Football League onMay 25 with Dromana coach GavinArtico taking the reins. His key assist-ant will be Hastings coach GlennMichie.

Scorpions’ Demons make a winning statementCASEY Scorpions coach Rohan Welsh said his teamhad been intent on making a statement in its VFLclash against Frankston after another disastrousperformance from senior affiliate Melbourne onSaturday night.

The Demons have lost their opening two AFLgames by a combined total of 227 points and Welshsaid the Melbourne-listed Scorpions players hadvowed to put their best foot forward on Sunday andtry and give the club an injection of confidence.

‘‘It was pretty good. The pleasing thing from ourpoint of view was the players played in the mannerthat we sort of asked them,’’ Welsh said. ‘‘I think theMelbourne players sort of wanted to make a bit of astatement — they looked at it like they didn’t play

on Saturday — and they could make a statement.’’The Scorpions did everything their senior affiliate

didn’t, proving too strong in all departments for theDolphins as they dominated the midfield and con-verted well in attack to win 23.11 (149) to 12.9(81). Scorpions ruckmen Max Gawn and Jake Spen-cer were outstanding as Dolphins ace Russell Gab-riel struggled against the dual attack.

The dominant ruck performance resulted inRohan Bail, Tom Couch and James Magner winninga mountain of possession through the midfield.

Youngster Dean Kent was promising with animpressive goal on the run and Luke Tapscott kick-ed six goals and had 23 possessions in an impressivedisplay up forward.

Cameron Pederson, who was dropped after Mel-bourne’s dismal loss to Port Adelaide in round one,was also impressive in defence. Magner and Couchwere outstanding in gathering 66 possessionsbetween them and youngster Mitch Clisby was alsoimpressive in his VFL debut.

Melbourne’s star recruit Jesse Hogan, who is noteligible to play AFL until next year, booted twogoals and moved well in attack for the Scorpions.

For the Dolphins, Michael Lourey kicked fivemajors to clearly by their best player, while his for-mer Mt Eliza teammate Sam Lloyd was alsoimpressive.

Casey will take on North Ballarat next Saturdayat Eureka Stadium from 2pm.

Tough day: Hampton Park’s MichaelMcDonald boots the ball forwardin their big loss to Dovetonon Saturday. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

Doveton stings hapless RedbacksBY BRAD McGRATH

SATURDAY was meant to be a happy day forHampton Park but it soon turned into a nightmare.

The Redbacks returned to their renovated homeground Robert Booth Reserve, which had broughtoptimism back to last year’s wooden spooners.

But Doveton spoiled the parade to record a200-point victory and showed the gulf in class be-tween the Casey Cardinia League finals contendersand also-rans.

Doveton coach Shannon Henwood said it was acredit to his team that they had put their foot downand blew Hampton Park away despite the tempta-tion to play flashy football.

‘‘I was pretty happy with the way we played. It’s abit easy to get on top like that and then start lairising— but we still played good team footy,’’ he said.

Doveton booted 6.7 in the opening quarter toblow the game apart and had extended the margin

to 76 points by half-time. Shannon Stocco bootedsix goals while Henwood (five goals) and ruckmanFrank D’Agostino (four) also hit the scoreboardheavily.

With the margin extended to 131 points at thefinal change the Redbacks desperately needed tofight the contest out.

But as was often the case last season, heads beganto drop and Doveton slammed on 12.5 to 1.2 in thefinal term to run out 36.18 (234) to 4.10 (34) win-ners.

The only blow for Doveton was Jarrad Boumanninjuring a hamstring, with the former Western Bull-dogs player to definitely miss their clash againstTooradin-Dalmore.

‘‘It is a bit of a blow but it happens,’’ Henwoodsaid. ‘‘We have just got to move on.’’

Henwood coached his first senior game on Sat-urday after taking the top job at just 23 years of ageand admitted to being nervous.

‘‘I have just got to make sure that I concentrate onplaying and still get a kick myself but so far sogood.’’

Henwood said he was looking forward to seeinghow his team goes against Tooradin-Dalmore at AJRobinson Oval on Saturday week.

‘‘We’ll probably find out where we’re at becausethey obviously played finals last year,’’ he said.

Beaconsfield will start favourite in its clashagainst Berwick at Holm Park Reserve with severalof its impressive recruits, including Scott Meyer, tobe unveiled. Pakenham will be keen to show itsimprovement under new coach Steve O’Bryan whenit clashes with Keysborough, which will also have apoint to prove under Chris Bryan.

Tooradin-Dalmore opens its season against ROCat Tooradin Recreation Reserve.

The grand final rematch between Cranbourneand Narre Warren will be played at Kalora Park onSunday.
