During the construction of Cassandra a Gingko Tree was planted at the school. The Gingko Tree was once widely scattered over the globe according to fossil evidence. The oldest leaf fossils of Gingko Trees predate the dinosaurs back to about 270 million years ago. The Gingko may be the oldest living seed plant. The Gingko Tree is thus considered by some to be one of the Wonders of the World. The oldest individual living Gingko Trees in the world today are found in the temple grounds of China, Korea and Japan. Some of these trees are said to be 4000 years old. Welcome to our school! At Cassandra Public School:The learning environment is safe, nurturing, positive, andrespectful.  The highly professional, caring, and dedicated staffprovides equitable learning access for all.  Our focus is on highachievement and success for each student.  Students, staff,parents, and community members are valued partners. ECOschoolsAt Cassandra P.S., the students, staff and parents exhibit a caringattitude toward environmental issues.  As a Platinum Eco School wecompost our organic waste, participate in Walk to School and ActiveTransportation initiatives.  We also have a Boomerang Lunchprogram and our students have learned to appreciate and value theenvironment.

Student Support ServicesWe offer programs and services to support the various needs of ourstudents.  We host a Home School Program for identified studentsfrom Grades 1-5.  We try to provide extra support to our students inKindergarten and Grade 1 who are not yet reading at level. Wewelcome parents in to assist with this goal.

A School on the Move!In 2009 Cassandra PS joined an elite group of schools across theprovince by being recognized as a School on the Move.  TheSchools on the Move initiative celebrates schools that are makingsignificant and sustained progress in student achievement, andconnects them with other schools that have similar backgroundsand challenges.

Student Life - Where You Belong

At Cassandra Public School, students have the opportunityto participate in many extra and co-curricular activities. Thisyear students have opportunities to participate on our CrossCountry, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Softball and Track &Field teams in addition to the school ECO Club and muchmore! (For a complete list, please check out "Also Offers"). In addition, there are a variety of programs through externalpartners at lunch and after school. We are involved in ourpartnership with Roots of Empathy. The school is also veryinvolved in community events, taking advantage of ourcommunity library and skating rink as well as communityevents in the school such as Movie Nights, Literacy Nights,Family Math Night. We also have a very strong partnershipwith the Muppets Too Day Care which operates in theschool.

What Sets Us Apart

Currently, Cassandra is one of many schools across theTDSB that offer entry into the Junior Extended FrenchProgram in Grade 4. The TDSB currently offers both a Junior Extended FrenchProgram and an Intermediate Extended Frenchprogram.The Extended French programs are designed forstudents who do not speak French at home.The JuniorExtended French program begins at the Grade 4 level.Students in this program spend 50% of their day in Frenchinstruction from Grade 4 - Grade 8 at the Extended Frenchschool. The subjects taught in French are: French LanguageArts, Social Studies and The Arts. English Language Arts,as well as Mathematics and Science are taught in English.Designated school pathways have been developed toensure that students have a continuation of program fromthe Grade 4 entry to the end of Grade 12.

Parent and Community Engagement

The Cassandra School Council is a partnership between parents,the principal, staff, and other members of the school community. Thepurpose of the Council is to promote participation in the affairs of theschool and to provide a forum for collaboration in support of ourchildren's learning. Some of the activities we organize and support include: Whole school programs (e.g., yoga, plays, etc.)Booster readingprogramSpecial lunchesMovie nightsGraduation ceremoniesAfter school programsPlay Day in June All parents are invited to the school council meetings.  We holdmeetings 6 times per year starting at 6:30 pm in the Staff Room. Ateach meeting, the principal provides an update on school activitiesand the Council discusses issues affecting the school.
