Legend / Cast StoneWhat is Cast Stone?

Dating back to around 500 BC, cast stoneis a mix of crushed stone that has beencompressed under extreme pressure into apre-designed shape or form to create a man-made limestone. We call it hand-forged stone.A similar technique is used in metal casting.

This technique is very similar to that usedby children everywhere to build sand castlesby pressing moist sand into a bucket, only ona much grander, more permanent scale.

The final result of the process is a hand-forged limestone that is very difficult todistinguish from natural limestone.

The primary difference between cast stoneand natural stone is cast stone's ability to beformed into complex shapes and designswhile maintaining the strength characteristicsof natural stone.

Cast Stone Vs.Natural Limestone?

When comparing cast stone products toquarried stone, three factors need to be takeninto consideration: Time, Cost and Durability.

Time

When considering the production time forstone products, it is important to remember thatnatural stone is hand carved. When makingstone parts with intricate design work, such as aCorinthian capital, thesame amount of time isinvolved in reproducingeach individual part.

When using cast stone,time involved with creatingthe original design work islimited to the first stoneproduced. Replication isthen easier, faster andmore cost effective thanin natural stone.

Cost

In considering cost, remember that eachpiece of natural stone will cost the same,because each one is hand carved.

When using cast stone, the major cost is inmaking the original form and the first stone.Subsequent stones from the same tooling canbe made for as much as 30% less than the costof natural stone.

What is the production timefor cast stone?

Many factors must be considered in thedetermination of production time for caststone. In most cases, production time rangesfrom four to eight weeks after Stone Legendsreceives the approved shop drawings.

Some time considerations includecomplexity of the job, the amount of stonebeing produced, and the current supply anddemand of cast stone products.

Legend / Bid Considerations

Catalog Units

Stone Legends produces stone to orderwhich, of course, is time consuming. However,there are a few ways to keep the productiontime and cost to a minimum.

One way is by keeping, in stock,thousands of standard tools used to producethe parts required for catalog units.

Stock Profiles

Stone Legends has hundreds of profiles thatcan be used in almost any type of application.These profiles have a wide range of styles,sizes and shapes. By using stock profiles, youcan cut custom tooling costs, as well asproduction time. A Stone Legends estimatormay be able to offer a cost / time saving profilealternative. Ask your estimator for moreinformation.

Refer to Chapter 11: Profiles - The DNA ofStone for more information on designing withProfiles.

Will modifying a Unitaffect the cost andproduction time?

In most cases, the answer is yes.Modifying a stock unit or designing a customunit usually involves custom charges andrequires extra time to be allocated for theadditional tooling needed to produce theparts. However, some units have beendesigned to allow for slight modifications at noadditional cost. For instance, shortening astraight smooth or fluted column by a fewinches adds no significant cost in most cases.

Your Stone Legends estimator can offersuggestions that will cut time and cost whilemaintaining the aesthetics of your project.

The following types of units should betaken into consideration while evaluating yourEstimate / Bid.

Inventory Units

By pre-producing and inventorying certainunits, order time can be cut down to a couple ofweeks. Our most popular units are oftenavailable from inventory. Your estimator hasmore detailed information.

Custom Units

Custom units refer to either modified catalogunits or new, completely custom units. Our staffof drafters, artisans and production personnelare ready to take your designs and cast them instone.

Additional charges apply depending on theamount of customization involved.

Customer Samples

Stone Legends often receives samples ofexisting stone products from our clients. Evensmall broken pieces are enough to recreate yourstonework for replacement or additions. Extrafees are based on the amount of art and degreeof difficulty involved in the project.

Additional time will be allocated on jobs thatinclude artwork, textures or special colors.

Artwork

Stone Legends employs artists andsculptors to re-create your custom artwork incast stone. Art fees are based on the amountand difficulty of the artwork.

Initial Deposit

The initial deposit must be made before aproject can be entered into the system as anew job. The amount and terms of the initialdeposit vary depending on size of project andthe total contract amount. Requirements andterms are stated on the first page of yourEstimate / Bid Proposal.

New Job

Once the Stone Legends financialdepartment receives the signed Estimate / BidProposal and the Initial Deposit, the project willbe entered into the Stone Legends databaseas a new job.

Job Setup Date

A job setup date will be assigned to thenew job and will be used in scheduling andtracking the job. Since the estimating processcan vary greatly in time, depending on the sizeand scope of the project, the New Job SetupDate is the only date considered during the jobproduction phase. So time on the project doesnot start running until you sign the contract andsend in the initial deposit.

Job Number

Each new job will be assigned a JobNumber which will be used for trackingpaperwork and correspondence throughout allphases of production and shipping.

All correspondence with the client willreference this Job Number.

The number should be kept handy andreferenced in any phone, fax or mail correspon-dence in order to speed response time.

When does the projectbecome a Job?

Once the Estimate / Bid is signed andreturned along with the required deposit, theproject can now be entered as a new job.Scheduling begins immediately. You havebought your place in the line.

Drafting Department

The Stone Legends drafting department iscomprised of Job Managers and Drafters withdecades of experience in the stone, construc-tion and architectural industries.

Hands-on training by the people that knowthe cast stone industry gives our drafting staffthe tools required to work with stone design andto communicate that information to our clients.

Job Managers

Once a job has been transferred to eitherthe sales or drafting departments, a JobManager is assigned. At this point, you canexpect a call from your Job Manager to give youinitial information on your submittal schedule.

The Job Manager will be your primarycontact for information on your jobthroughout the submittal, production andshipping phases.

Where does my Job go next?

The next step to getting your stoneproduced is the evaluation and scheduling ofyour cast stone job. A job manager will beassigned as your main contact.

The following pages will discuss the jobphase as it relates to the drafting department,however, the same basic procedures apply tojobs where Sales is assigned as the jobmanager.

Submittal Cover Sheet

The first page of your submittal package isthe Submittal Cover Sheet. It will state the JobNumber, the Submittal Number and all jobrelevant information.

What do I do with theSubmittal Package?

The submittal package is designed tovisually communicate the ordered units,quantities, and sizes for your verification andapproval. It is at this point that you approve theunits to be produced and / or modify the units tofit your needs.

Immediately following the Cover Sheets willbe the Table of Contents. This can be one or

more pages andwill show the

order of shopdrawings

within thesubmittal

package.

Submittal Plan Placement

The Plan Placement drawings will indicatethe locations of all Submittal Units using plans,elevations, or cross sections. Usually theseplacements are actual scans of your plans, but

can be in-house generateddrawings if

needed.

Submittal Profile

The Submittal Profile displays the basicshape of extruded units or parts of units beingsubmitted. The sheet will indicate the name andthe controldimensions foreach profile.

Submittal Unit

The Submittal Unit sheet displays each unitgraphically. It is important to verify the quantityand sizes for each unit.

Only primary Control Dimensions aredisplayed for verification that the unit will fit inthe desired location.

Submittal Return

Once the submittal is verified for allrequired information, each sheet's approvalstamp must be marked and each sheet signed,(see below). No changes can be made pastthis point. It is now: "Cast in Stone."

Stone Legends works on an "In Writing"basis and will not accept verbal approvals.However, faxed returns are acceptable. Anoriginal hard copy is only required if the fax isnot legible.

Each Submittal Drawing will have theApproval Stamp in the lower left corner ofthe drawing area. The stamp must bemarked and accompanied by yoursignature in order to proceed with theproduction process.

Approval Stamp NOTE: Often a client will mark Exception Resubmitwhen only minor updates were made. This option forcesStone Legends to resubmit and adds time to your project.When making minor changes, the Approved As Notedoption usually speeds the process unless a resubmittal istruly required. However, the option is yours.

Submittal Unit Interface

The Submittal Unit Interface sheet displayscross sections or details of units, profiles andparts that interface with one another. Thesedrawings are extremely important in verifying that

shapes fit togetherdimensionally

andaesthetically.

Legend / Drafting ConsiderationsCan I add more stone tothe order during theSubmittal Phase?

Absolutely. The Submittal Package isdesigned to verify the amount of stone neededfor your project. Each Submittal Unit sheet liststhe quantity for that unit within the title block.Simply mark out the quantity and write in thenew quantity.

If a completely new unit is needed, eithercopy an existing Unit Sheet and mark it up withthe new dimensions and quantity OR sketchthe new unit on a blank sheet of paper andreturn it with the Submittal Package.

How will changes affect mysigned Estimate / Bid?

Once the Estimate / Bid has been signed, itbecomes a contract document. Any changes,whether additions or deletions, will besubmitted for your approval on an itemizedChange Order. The Change Order will indicateadditions and deletions to your initial contract,as well as and additional deposit requirementsand notations. A Change Order is anaddendum to a contract and does not void thecontracted bid.

When can I expect to getmy Submittal Package?

Many factors affect the scheduling ofsubmittals: number of jobs in line, the size ofthe project, and plant requirements to name afew. Because of our size, our averages arepredictable and we can give you a good timeestimate. We do our best to get your submittaldrawings to you in a timely manner. It is just asimportant that they be returned promptly.

When the job is scheduled, you will becontacted by the Job Manager with thetentative schedule for your submittal. Allowseveral days after sending in your signedcontract. Then expect a call.

Will I get the entire projectsubmitted at once?

In most cases, the answer would be yes.However, there are exceptions that will affect thenumber of submittals you will receive.

Very large jobs are usually broken intomultiple submittals based on the order requiredto accommodate the building process. Youreceive a smaller percentage of your project at atime, making your approvals easier and allowingyou to get stone into production and on your siteas soon as possible.

Do I have a choice as towhat Units get submittedfirst?

The Job Manager will usually break downthe project into logical groups for installation:watertable and surrounds, cornices andentablatures, landscaping units, etc.

However, you can notify the Job Manager atany time to request special ordering of unitsneeded within each submittal package. We willmake every attempt to fulfill your needs.Remember all requests must be in writing.

How many people will workon my job?

Any number of people throughout the factorywill be attending to your job needs. However,you only need the name of your Job Manager.He or she will be your primary contact forquestions, information and order status. Withyour job number, almost anyone can get yousome general information or have some one withmore information call you back.

How long will it take toget my job into productiononce approved?

Scheduling and timing are based on manyfactors. Once the submittal package isapproved, signed and returned, the job will beevaluated to catch any changes required andthen scheduled back to a drafter for resubmittalor to proceed with the assembly andproduction packages. The scheduling processis based on the date the returned submittal isreceived. Time will vary depending on thenumber of jobs in line.

Any major changes, additions, or selectionof the Exception Resubmit box can add timedue to a resubmitting all or part of the package.At this time, change orders are generated inwriting for any additions or deletions as youdetail other site enhancements.

Once final approvals for each submittal arereceived, production and assembly drawingsare created. These are used to detail eachindividual stone for production and put the partmarks on the unit drawings for installation.These drawings do not require clientauthorization. At this point, the projectbecomes "Cast in Stone" and no changes canbe made on items released to production.

Can I get drawings for myplans?

Digital drawing files on your job areavailable in a variety of formats, including .dwg,.dxf and .tif for your use. Email or regular mailare typically used at this time.

Stone Legends uses AutoCAD draftingsoftware by AutoDesk, Inc. Your Job Managercan tell you the current version used by ourdrafting department and can give you moreinformation on the best way to obtain copies ofthe drawings.

Legend / ProductionHow will I know my job hasbeen released to production?

Once the drafter has broken down eachunit into its associated parts and released thejob to production, you will receive a ReferenceAssembly Shop Packet that includes assemblydrawings for each unit that has been releasedto production. Each drawing will includeassembly marks that correspond to bar codetags attached to the produced stone.

The package will also contain a shop ticketthat shows all pieces of stone that have beenreleased to production.

This packet will help you to pre-plan job sitestorage needs for when your shipment arrivesand get installation estimates from masons. Sitestorage for the pallets should be level.

Can I make changes once thejob is released to production?

Due to the number of departments involvedand the amount of paperwork needed to produceyour stone, there is no way to make changes orstop the production process once a job has beenreleased to production.

From the point of release to production, theJob Manager can only keep watch over theprocess and answer any questions you mighthave regarding the progress. It is as good ascast in stone now.

When can I expect theproduction to be complete?

In most cases, your job will be scheduledand given a projected completion date shortlyafter being released to production. This date isbased on several factors and is a tentativecompletion date. Estimated times may vary, butthese dates are our best effort and are anintended target date for completion.

Contact your Job Manager for up to datereports on the progress of your project. Whenthe job is nearing completion, the ShippingDepartment will become the direct contact foreach shipment.

The size of your job, the amount of stockunits and the amount of custom work involvedwill also greatly affect your schedule.

Protecting Stone forShipment

Stone Legends has gone to great lengthsto make sure your order arrives exactly as youordered it. When preparing your stone fordelivery, bullet proof packaging is anunderstatement.

Our stringent guidelines for stacking eachstone in a predetermined order, separatingindividual layers and protecting every corner ofevery stone is just the beginning.

Special packaging includes filling everyvoid with expansion materials and layering ofprotective wrapping to endure the mostinhospitable weather and the roughest roadconditions.

You can be sure that Stone Legends will doits best to deliver your stone in pristinecondition.

Shipment Time

In most cases, a stone production will beshipped within seven days after production of thefinal piece of stone. This time allows for the finalstones to be inspected by quality control, for anyrejected pieces to be remade, and to allow forthe financial responsibilities to be addressed.

This time can also be affected by clientdelivery needs and carrier schedules.

Do I have to wait for allthe stone to be producedbefore shipment?

The answer to this question dependsprimarily on the size of the job.

Small to medium jobs will ship on a singletruck and must wait until all stone has beenproduced unless special shipping arrangementshave been made at additional cost.

A large job to ship on multiple trucks will bebroken down into multiple productions andshipped as soon as a truckload of stone isproduced. In these cases, you may wish tospeak to your estimator or job managerconcerning production and packaging optionsin order to get the stone you need to your sitewhen you need it.

How is the stone shipped?

For nationwide delivery, Stone Legendsships all our stone via air ride dedicated trucksor on common carriers. We use only nationallyrespected companies.

Production Invoice

After the last stone for your production run iscompleted, the job is released to the shippingdepartment. Usually within two business days,you will receive an invoice for the balance dueprior to shipping. The invoice will notify you thatyour stone is complete and will soon be readyto ship.

Am I responsible for theentire balance beforeshipment?

The invoice will contain the total balance ofthe stones that are ready to be shipped.

In most cases, the job will be produced in asingle production run and the balance willindicate 100% of the entire job.

In other cases where the job is large enoughto require multiple production runs and multipletrucks, your invoice will only contain thepercentage of the job that is associated with thecurrent shipment.

In either case, the financial responsibilityagreed to on the bid, must be completed beforethe stone will be released for shipment.

Each shipment of stone is fully insured andguaranteed to get to your job site safely. Thatmeans that if damage occurs during shipment,you can count on Stone Legends to replace andreship the material at absolutely no cost to you.

Shipping Tags

In association with the Shipping Package,you will find Shipping Tags on all parts of yourstone order.Each tagwill indicatethe unitmark andpartnumber,color,dimensions of the part, quantity, and theproduction number and job number.

Using these tags in conjunction with theAssembly Package will help plan convenientstorage locations on the job site and speedassembly of the parts into units.

Packing Slips

The Packing Slips included in yourshipping package inform you of the parts thathave been packagedon each pallet.These slips areorganized byPallet ID andwill list theassociatedproduction numbers,unit marks andquantities.

Once your order is complete and ready fordelivery, our shipping department will contactwith you with transport arrangements and dates.

Verify the Delivery

It is very important to verify your deliveryonce the stone is on your site.

Stone Legends carefully packs allshipments. As the stone shipment is unloaded,please check for any external damage to thepackaging caused BY THE CARRIER. If anydamage is observed, note this on the Bill ofLading when the material is signed for.

Often moisture buildup occurs duringshipping. We strongly recommend that theouter plastic / crate be removed and thematerial be allowed to aerate for about 48hours for final drying of the stone. Followingthis period, inspect each item for possibleshipment damage.

If there are any problems regarding theshipment, contact Stone Legends as soon aspossible. Refer to Remakes on page 452.

Site Preparation for Delivery

There are a few things you may need priorto the delivery of your stone order.

Space is an immediate consideration. Youwill need a level place for the stone to bedelivered, with enough room for the pallets tobe stored. The next consideration is a forklift.We recommend that you have a 4,000 lb.forklift on hand for the delivery and forrelocating your stone to other storagelocations on the job site. For jobs to beshipped by common carrier, the shippingdepartment requests a delivery truck with aliftgate. However, availability is dependent onthe carrier company's schedule and vehicles.

Job Site Inventory Tracking

The Stone Legends Delivery Packet isdesigned to aid you in keeping track of all ofthe units and parts that have been delivered.

Rather than just asimple packaging slip, youreceive information thatwill allow you to knowexactly what parts arepackaged on each palletor crate, what units thoseparts are associated with,how those units will beassembled, and where

those units will be installed on your project.With this tracking information at your

fingertips, you will be better able to pre-plan yourinstallation schedules and storage requirements.More than one field tradesman has called ouroffices and been directed to the specific part on aspecific pallet when he could not access thesedocuments on site while he was working.

What should I expect?

You shipping packet will include severalpieces of information to help verify and track yourshipment. These include:

Shipment Cover Letter

The Shipment Cover Letter will be the firststatement of whatyour shipmentincluded. It will listthe Shipment ID,the Bill of LadingID, the Pallet ID's,and the associatedJob Number andProduction BatchNumbers .

Production Shop Ticket

The Production Shop Ticket will list all partsproduced under each Production Number. Thislist will give you a checklist by which to verifyquantities shipped. If any parts are missing,contact Stone Legends for replacements.Refer to Missing Parts, page 452.

Bill of Lading

The Straight Billof Lading is the

statement ofshipment based on

Unit Assembly Marks

By using the unit assembly marks and thecross sections associated with the units, theunits will be easily recognized and, moreimportantly, easily assembled. The parts are allnumbered and referenced to pallets shipped.

Missing Parts

With our exclusive inventory control andreconcilliation process, it is unlikely that stones

Chargeable Remakes

Occasionally stone parts will be damaged orbroken on site while moving or installing. StoneLegends realizes the importance of this situationand is determined to help to keep your projectrunning on schedule.

Contact Stone Legends with the parts needed.You will be charged for the needed parts, however,the order will be considered a ChargeableRemake with high priority production, the samehigh priority as though it were our error.

Safe Handling

Cast stone parts can be very heavy and mayneed two or more men to lift some of the pieces.

The edges are fragile. Extra precautionsshould be taken not to rest weight on corners.Much damage occurs on site, caused byimproper handling of the stone. For instance,always use packaging foam to protect the edgeswhile handling.

Remakes

Stone Legends will remake and ship anyparts of your order that have been damagedduring shipment, that are missing from yourshipment, or were made incorrectly, at no cost toyou, for up to six months of delivery date.Remakes have the highest priority in the plant.We can usually have the stone produced andreshipped in days.

Contact your job manager for specificinformation. We require written notification and,on occasion, ask for photos to illustrate theproblem.

If you picked up your shipment instead ofhaving us ship it to you, we will replace missingor improperly made parts, but not piecesdamaged in shipping. And, you will need topick the replacements up at the factory.

Legend / Installation Considerations

Basic Installation

Whether you have one unit or a houseful ofstone, the basic steps are the same.

1. Organize and inspect the stone by unit,preferably near where it goes.

2. Starting at the bottom of the unit, placeeach stone carefully per the AssemblyPackage.

3. Level each layer as you go up the unit.Use shims to keep the joints even andcontrol dimensions.

Installation Note

There are many ways to install cast stonethat are acceptable. Stone Legends does notimply that these installation options are the onlyones available.

Pointing

Before pointing, mask off joints with tape.This is very important. Stone is porous. If it isnot taped, the unprotected surface may bestained, making clean up more difficult. Bluepainter's tape works best. Make sure the stoneis dry so the tape will stick.

To color match the mortar for pointing, mixfour parts of a matching color sand to 11/2 partswhite mortar mix. When the grout has set upsomewhat and after any final pointing up iscomplete, remove masking tape. At this time, youmay want to take a piece of short nap carpet orburlap and burnish the joints. This gives a betterfinish and makes the joints look more like thestone itself. Do not rake joints.

How do I find a mason?

There are masons in or around just aboutevery town or city in the country. Referrals are agood place to start your search.

Stone Legends keeps a database ofthousands of masons across the country. Inmost cases, we can find one near you that hasbeen referred by a client. Contact your StoneLegends estimator or job manager for a list ofstone masons in your area.

On the other hand, if you have workedwith a mason that has impressed you with hisabilities and knowledge and that you wouldlike to refer to our other clients, we wouldappreciate being able to add the informationto our database. Just send us the name,company name, address, phone and any othercontact information available.

Stone Mason

The first step is to find an experiencedmason who is up to date on all of the latestinstallation techniques and attachments. Withthis base, there should be no problems withyour stone installation. Often, the methodsare a matter of preference for the mason.

How much doesinstallation cost?

Many factors go into determining the of costof installing cast stone, including: area of thecountry, local market factors, labor costs, andthe quantity of stone to be installed.

On average, a reliable point of referencefor installation would be 40% - 60% of the totalcost of stone ordered. (As of January 2002).Final cost will vary with complexity of the units.

Avoid Installation Mistakes

Inherent with any project, mistakes will bemade in the installation of cast stone. Mostmistakes are harmless and unnoticeable orcan be repaired easily.

Working with qualified professionals, suchas stone masons and structural engineers, willhelp minimize mistakes and help the installationof your product last a lifetime and longer.

Shown here is one very common mistakethat occurs during installation of colonnades(long runs of columns). Thermal expansion ofthe steel caused by normal weather conditionswas not taken into consideration. This mistakeultimately led to the damage of every column inthe colonnade.

Steel tubing in this case spanning only 60to 70 feet can easily expand 11/4" due tothermal expansion. Attaching the steel directlyto the column causes a lateral load. This, inturn, causes damage once the steel expandsand contracts due to weather conditions.

By including skid plates to trap the metaltubing to the column, the vertical load remainsresting on the columns while allowing movementof the lateral load. This is just one example of whyusing professionals for installation is so important.

4. Secure each stone to the structure withclips, ties, screws or other appropriatehardware. Use steel lintels as required.

5. Support any heavy parts externally duringinstallation.

Epoxy

We do not recommend using epoxy insteadof mortar for installation of cast stone. However,it can be used to support the cast stoneattachments to thestructure. Standardmortar acts as agasket of softermaterial, protectingthe stone fromdamage. This is aneffective techniquethat is still in usetoday.

6. Use regular mortar to fill joints. Leave 1"clear from surface for pointing.

7. Point the joints with a matching sandmixed with white mortar mix. (See below)

Lateral Loading

Wall veneer is the most common form oflateral loading. For a brick or stone installation,attaching the stone to the wood, steel or masonryframe with various types of screws orattachments allows the load to be spreadbetween the brick veneer and the supportingwall. See the drawing on the right.

In the case of a plaster or stucco wallinstallation, attachments would be larger andstronger to allow the wall to completely support theweight of the stone. See the drawing on the left.

Suggested Attachments

Books can be written on this subject. Hereare some common methods of attaching stoneto structures. By no means are these the onlymethods, or the best methods for your project.

Seismic conditions and building codesmean that structural engineering should alwaysbe done locally. The installation/attachmentmethods are the same in most cases, withsome variation based on region, structure andlocal practices.

Stone Legends works with architects,contractors and builders on a daily basis. Eachproject helps to build a database of informationthat helps future clients by suggestingattachments and installation instructions.

Load Bearing

Depending on the size of the stone and theamount of the load, Stone Legends productsare load bearing. It is highly recommended towork with a structural engineer in order todetermine load requirements. Our stone hasan average psi of 6000 lbs.

Span Loading

Steel lintels on buildings or over openingswill help to support stones that span distances.

One preference is to slot cut the back of thestone, hiding an inserted short steel angle toattach blind.

Another option is to support the stone fromunderneath, however, unless sandwichedbetween mortar joints, the steel lintel will beexposed to view.

Sheer Loads

Primarily associated with columns and pillarsthat are free standinginstallations, weight issupported throughoutthe column itself. Inthis instance, it isnecessary to use pinsbetween the shaftpieces to controlhorizontal shifting ofthe stone.

In the case of a cap for landscape wall orlandscape pier, pins may be needed to attachthe caps to the structure.

As with all things, cast stone must be caredfor once installed. The following informationwill provide you with recommended solutions toseveral areas of care, as well as, providesuggested products to use.

PROSOCO, Inc.

PROSOCO, Inc. is an industry leaderspecializing in the cleaning and sealing ofvarious types of masonry products, includingcast stone. Using samples of Stone Legendscast stone in all three standard colors,PROSOCO has provided laboratory tests andmade recommendations as to which of theirproducts, primarily cleaners and sealants, workwell with our products (Test results are avail-able upon request).

The following are their recommendationsfor cast stone care.

New Construction Cleaning

Based on the test results, both cleaners,Sure Klean® Vana Trol® and Sure Klean®

Burnished Custom Masonry Cleaner, and alldilutions performed well in removing excessmortar smears on the submitted tiles. Thecleaners performed well in removing the mortarsoils even after the mortar remained on thesurface of the tiles for 21 days under idealcuring conditions. Sure Klean® Vana Trol®

performed slightly better than Sure Klean®

Burnished Custom Masonry Cleaner in terms oftotal mortar removal.

It is also recommended that the selectedcleaners be used in the lowest possibleconcentration, typically a 1:3 dilution for SureKlean® Burnished Custom Masonry Cleanerand 1:8 dilution for Sure Klean® Vana Trol®.They should be rinsed with the lowest pressureof water as practical, garden hose strengthpreferred. To facilitate easier removal of excessmortar and construction dirt while minimizingany potential adverse affect on the stone, cleanwithin seven days of construction.

Surface Alterations

Both dilutions of Sure Klean® BurnishedCustom Masonry Cleaner and Sure Klean® VanaTrol® tested were effective in removing excessmortar and dirt from the cast stone tiles submittedfor testing. The most appropriate cleaner anddilution should be determined on the specific jobsite, and will be dependent primarily on thenature and severity of soiling present at thatlocation.

Protective Water Repellents

Based on test results, all of the treatmentscan be recommended for job site testing on all ofthe cast stone tiles. For added stain repellency,Stand Off® Stone, Tile & Masonry Protector andStand Off® Limestone & Marble Protector arerecommended.

Apply all products in accordance with themanufacturer’s recommendation provided oncontainer labels and product data sheets. Testingshould be conducted on site to determine themost appropriate water repellent product andprocedures for a particular project. See productliterature for additional application and productinformation.

Protective Stain Repellents

Based on test results, Stand Off® Stone, Tile& Masonry Protector and Stand Off® Gloss ‘NGuard can be recommended for use. For thebest beading characteristics, Stand Off® Stone,Tile & Masonry Protector is recommended. Forslight color enhancement and slight gloss, StandOff® Gloss ‘N Guard is recommended.

Apply all products in accordance with themanufacturer’s recommendation provided oncontainer labels and product data sheets. On sitetesting should always be conducted to determinethe most appropriate stain repellent andprocedures for a particular project.

Unless you want a specific look, cast stonedoes not need a finish or sealer. Some like toseal it to make future cleaning easier (only asoft brush and water).

To protect your stone from the elements, werecommend PROSOCO's Weather Seal PD orChemProbe's Prime-A-Pell®.

To protect your stone from staining, werecommend a siloxane based repellent, suchas PROSOCO Stand Off® Limestone andMarble Protector.

If you plan to seal, please do so afterinstallation and cleaning and allow the stone todry before applying any sealer.

Following are some other recom-mendations from Stone Legends. Considerthese the post-construction final punchout.

Smoke Protection

We recommend a water-based product thatprovides excellent protection such as LambertSouthwest's DecoSeal. (DecoSeal will slightlydarken the stone but does allow easy wipedown of stone products).

Patching Cast Stone

The following is a basic four step processfor patching you cast stone product.

1. Crush extra stone to a fine powder withhammer. It is necessary to pulverize thesands to refine the patch.

2. Mix one (1) part adhesive with two(parts) sand or stone powder. Addsmall amounts of water until a stiff pastedevelops. Be sure to use very smallamounts of water at a time!

3. Slightly dampen stone in patch area.Apply sand/adhesive paste with puttyknife. Sculpt with edge of a stainlesssteel tool to match adjacent stone.

4. Repeat if necessary.

5. After fully dried, it may require a verylight acid wash. Be sure to rinsethoroughly to neutralize the acid.

Cleaning Cast Stone

After installation, we recommend cleaningthe stone with a solution of muriatic acid andwater (75% water), or with one of the cleanersfrom PROSOCO discussed on page 462.

When using the muriatic acid solution,cover areas that can bedamaged. Wear rubbergloves. Work on a smallarea at a time. Wet thestone with clear waterfirst. This is veryimportant so you do notetch the surface of thestone. Apply acidsolution and let sit for aminute. Rub stubbornstains with a soft brush.Do not use a metalbrush. Rinse with clearwater. This should getrid of stains, smudgesand some mortarsplashes. Repeat application for stubbornstains. Cast stone will take several days to dryevenly.

For the PROSOCO products, follow labeldirections.

Colors

Stone Legends offers three standard colorsfor our cast stone products. These are Tan, Buffand White (refer to color photos on this page).The Tan and White colors are comparable toIndiana limestone, while our Buff resemblesthe limestone indigenous to Texas.

We have tried to make these as accurateas possible, but final color selection should bemade from actual samples that will befurnished to you after your job has been setup,and prior to receiving your contract shopdrawings, unless specifically requested earlier.

Color Matching

Stone Legends products have very littlecolor variation from piece to piece. Somevariation is typical of a natural product. Ifdesired, stone can be tinted slightly to even outthe color overall. To achieve this:

1. Take a piece of waste stone to the localpaint store. Purchase some A100 Latexpaint in a color that matches the stone.

2. Dilute the paint to a thin stain texture.Start with 15 drops of water to 1 drop ofpaint. You may have to thicken slightly.But the idea is to have a very thin stain.

3. Using a makeup sponge or otherapplicator, lightly dab the color on thearea to be blended. Be sure to featherover a large area to maximize theblending.

4. Allow to dry. You may use a hand-helddryer to speed the process.

5. Apply more paint wash if desired. Applyin small steps to avoid over coloring.

Antiquating

There are many ways in which to accomplishthe aged or antique / faux look.

The natural process involves the set up by analgae or a bacteria growing in the stone or a dirtlodging in the stone. Most of the time, if youleave the natural patina on the exterior of thestone it will age on its own just fine, provided youdon’t seal the stone or inhibit it in anyway.

You’ll especially notice the algae growingclose to trees that retain moisture. Also, you’llnotice one side of the trees are generally green.In general, the stone in this situation wouldproduce the same effect.

However, there are several ways that you canaccelerate the process. Contact Stone Legendsfor additional information.

Faux Finish

Faux finishing is the term for decorativepainting techniques. Sponging, ragging, rag-rolling and color washing are some of the morepopular finishing techniques.

These techniques are so popular simplybecause they’re easy, inexpensive and offer atruly customized look. Plus, as an added bonus,they’re easy to correct Simply repaint and startover. All you need are the right tools, someinstruction and a little practice.

Decorating retailers can help with the first twoof these requirements and offer all the necessaryproducts to get the job done right. Give thedecorating centers in your area a call and findout what they have to offer.

Mix Design

Stone Legends' cast stone is a mixture ofcrushed silica quartz and a bonding agent in amatrix. The final effect is that of naturallimestone.

PSI Ratings

Stone Legends' cast stone products will havea minimum 6500 psi rating .

Finishing the Unfinished Side

Sometimes the back of a stone is visible. Toget a finish similar to the surface on the front ofthe stone, two steps are required.

1. Rubbing or stoning the edges isrecommended if one of the back edges isexposed or not adjacent to a mortar joint.Fine white stones are required to polishedges. Do not use any stone that is notwhite or the fines will fill the pores of thestone and leave behind another problemin the wake.

2. To remove the trowel face, acid washingwill remove the silted surface and exposethe quartz face adding luster and anevenness of surface texture. Thestrength of the muriatic acid or therepeating of the etching process willdetermine the ultimate texture.

Is there a recommendedpump for fountains?

Stone Legends recommends that you contactyour local pool specialist. He should be able torecommend the best pump for your fountain andhave access to proper installation instructions andhardware.

Weight of Cast Stone

Use this equation:

Therefore a cubic foot is:

0.079 x 12 x 12 x 12= 136.5 lbs.

While every effort is made to keep individualpieces weight to a manageable level, StoneLegends recommends moving pieces with two ormore men.

Does Stone Legends weigheach part?

We do not currently weigh any piecesindividually due to the possibility of damage to thestone. Pallets are weighed as a whole and anyweight estimation of a single stone is based on arough mathematical calculation.

How many PSI is a fully setmortar joint rated to?

Mortar can be purchased in varying strengths.Types A & B average between 1600-2400 psi.That is considerably less than the 6500 lb. psirating of the stone, which is as it should be.

The softer mortar's role is to provide a gasketseat, allowing minor movements of expansion andcontraction of the stone.

Mortar mixtures resulting in extremely highpsi’s should be avoided to prevent possibledamage to the stone and structural instability.

Can Thinset be used in lieu ofmortar mix?

The most common usage of thinset is inflooring applications. Best results will be obtainedby following Stone Legends recommended mortarspecifications. Nonstandard mortar mixes shouldonly be considered after careful reading of allapplicable product labels. Note that some frostproof mortar mixes have additives found in thinset.

One Year LimitedProduct Warranty

The manufacturer warrants for one year tothe purchaser that the material manufacturedwill pass compressive strength standardsestablished by the industry to exceed 5000 psi.when tested in accordance with C-1194. StoneLegends products exceed this standard. A freereplacement will be provided for each productthat fails to pass this test. This warranty doesnot cover any accessory materials or labor,such as flashing, grouting, installation or anyother related costs. The manufactured materialmust be installed by all applicable federal,state, and local building codes in order for thewarranty to be valid. Manufacturer reserves theright to inspect, photograph, and removesamples of alleged defective product.

The manufacturer’s warranty is exclusiveand in lieu of all other warranties whetherwritten, oral, implied, or statutory, excluding anywarranty of merchantability or fitness for aparticular purpose and expressly excludesliability for any incidental, consequential, orother damages, and liability based upon anyalleged negligence, breach of duty or any otherlegal theory other than the limited liabilitywarranty set forth above. The maximum liabilityshall not exceed the purchase price of thematerial provided.

This warranty expressly excludes liabilityfor color variations, cracking, or chipping ofmanufactured materials.

Delays & Acceptance

Scheduling is a very important part of everyproject. The best way we can sum up thissituation is "A delay on your part does notnecessarily facilitate a rush on our part." But, justas with a doctor/patient relationship, we attemptto fulfill every requirement that our customer has.Prompt attention to all correspondence is thebest way to avoid scheduling problems. Ordersare processed in the sequence they arereceived. Delivery dates are always an estimate,especially for custom orders. With this in mind,we suggest you place your orders well inadvance.

Cancellations & Returns

When cancelling an order, please note thatwe charge a cancellation fee to cover alladministrative costs incurred. Once an order hasbeen released to production, it cannot becancelled or changed. There is also a restockingfee for returned standard items and all returnsmust be pre-approved by Stone Legends.Return freight charges are the responsibility ofthe customer.

Warranty

Our products are warranted to be free fromdefect, except those related to the natural color

variation inherent in theproduction of cast stone.Any defective product willbe replaced. Refer toOne Year Limited ProductWarranty.

Modifications &Custom Orders

Any changes to the standard criteria listedin each chapter should be discussed with oursales technicians to determine additionalcharges that will be required. Customrequirements are priced according to yourdesigns and specifications. Please send usyour drawings so we may accurately estimateany custom items. A minimum 50% deposit isrequired before production can begin. Ordersare noncancellable once production hasstarted. Custom designs cannot be returned.Remember, you can always TAKE THE EASYWAY OUT by sending us your plans andwe will provide a complete cost Estimate / Bidincluding freight.

Pricing

Cost factors do not include shipping,administration, shop drawings, custom piecelengths, or sales tax within Texas. Cost factorsare effective February 1, 2002 and subject tochange without notice. Orders less than$3,000 must be 100% prepaid. Larger ordersrequire a deposit to begin processing. Thebalance is due upon completion of production.All orders must be prepaid prior to shipment,including freight charges.
