• Venting instruction contained in thismanual may or may not apply to yourarea. Consult your local authority for re-quirement in your area.

• Where the gas vent extends through ac-cessible spaces, it should be enclosed toavoid personal contact and damage. En-closure walls should have a fire ratingequal to or greater than the floors throughwhich the gas vent passes except in singleor two-family dwellings.

• Situate the gas vent in the structure sothat it can be installed without cuttingjoists, sills, plates, or major load bearingpartitions or members. It is also impor-tant to locate the base of the gas vent asnear as possible to the heating appliance.

• This heater must be properly connected toa venting system. This heater is equippedwith a vent safety shutoff system.

• Use only vents labeled "FOR EXTE-RIOR USE" above the roofline.

• Consult the authority having jurisdic-tion to select the correct gas vent di-ameter. Avoid using a larger than nec-essary diameter.

The following actions will void the war-ranty on your venting system:

• Installation of any damaged ventingcomponent

• Unauthorized modification of the vent-ing system

• Installation of any component part notmanufactured or approved by DESAInternational

• Installation other than as instructed bythese instructions

Your burner system is approved for use withany listed gas vent. A listed gas vent is a factorymade and listed system designed, and installedexclusively for removing products of combus-tion, excess air, and dilution air resulting fromburning fuel gas. Metal vents, the most com-mon type of vent, employ double wall con-struction enclosing an insulating air space. This air space both helps keep flue gases warmand reduce heat transferred to nearby combus-tibles. This appliance is equipped with a safetycontrol system designed to protect againstimproper venting of combustion products.

It is very important that the venting systemmaintain its balance between the combus-tion air intake and the flue gas exhaust.Certain limitations apply to vent configura-tions and must be strictly followed.

WARNING: This gas stove withburner system and vent assemblymust be vented directly to the out-side. The venting system mustNEVER be attached to a chimneyserving a separate solid fuel burn-ing appliance.

TYPE B-VENT INSTALLATION(Listed B-0 or Greater)Before beginning installation be sure that theoverall height and gas vent size conform tobuilding code requirements. Gas vents ex-tending through pitched roofs can extend aminimum height of at least 600 mm (2')higher than any obstruction within 3m (10').Gas vents extending through flat roofs arerequired to extend at least 600 mm (2') abovethe roof and at least 600 mm (2') higher thanany portion of the building or adjoining build-ing within 3m (10') of the gas vent.

TROUBLESHOOTINGVENTINGPROBLEMSMost venting problems are caused by incor-rect vent sizing, improper installation, orinadequate air supply. A preliminary checkfor a field problem might include:

• Using a draft meter to determine ifventing system draft meetsmanufacturer’s specifications

• Checking the vent sizing according tomanufacturer’s specifications, applianceinput, and venting configuration

• Examining the entire venting system forfaults such as disconnected joints fordamaged vent sections

• Making sure vent and air openings arenot obstructed

If these procedures do not reveal the source ofthe problem, troubleshooting may includeattention to common venting problems.

FLUE GAS SPILLAGESpillage occurs when flue gases cannot exitthe vent system and back up into the dwell-ing. A primary symptom of appliancesequipped with a Vent Safety Shutoff System(flue spill switch) is unexplained applianceshutoffs. Other symptoms of flue gas spillageat the draft hood include condensation onwalls and windows and/or noticeable odors.Spillage may also result in the release ofcarbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, highlytoxic gas. A simple spillage test can be con-ducted if spillage is suspected. See CheckingGas Connection, pages 14 and 15.

CAUSES OF SPILLAGE ANDCORRECTIVE ACTION

Incorrect Vent Sizing

If the vent is too small or too short, spillagemay occur. If the vent is too large, excessivedilution air may cool flue gases and reducedraft, causing spillage. The vent cap sizeshould also be checked. Checkmanufacturer’s instructions, appliance in-put rating, and appropriate sizing tables.

Venting Condition

Loose joints can affect draft and cause spill-age. “Mashed” vent sections and damagedvent caps can restrict flow and cause spill-age. Examine and replace as needed.

Obstructions

Small animals or birds may get into and blockthe vent or draft hood outlet. Dust, lint, andforeign objects may obstruct air inlets. Re-move obstructions and clean openings.

Lateral Run

Lengthy horizontal or non-vertical runs causeresistance to flow and may reduce draftenough to cause spillage. The pitch of lateralruns can also be a problem; lateral runsshould be pitched 1/4" rise per foot of hori-zontal run from the appliance to the vent.

Elbows

Too many elbows cause excessive restric-tion of flow and may result in spillage.Usually, two 90º turns can be tolerated in aproperly sized venting system. More thantwo may cause problems and necessitatechanging the system.

Negative Pressure in theDwelling

An extremely tight house may not supplyadequate combustion and venting air. Useof mechanical exhaust such as a dryer ventor range vent may worsen the problem. Anair exchange system must be installed in thedwelling to correct this problem.

Flue Gas Cooling

Venting exposed to extremely cold tem-peratures or venting of single wall construc-tion loses heat needed to maintain draft;massive masonry chimneys absorb neededheat. If the flue gases cool excessively, draftis reduced and spillage may result. Useproper materials, insulate and protect prop-erly, reline when necessary.

Down Drafts

In certain wind conditions and in certainrelationships with nearby structures andobjects, high pressure conditions may affectdraft negatively. Relocate the vent cap, raiseits height, or use an approved high wind cap.

INSTALLING GAS PIPING TOFIREPLACE LOCATION

WARNING: A qualified in-staller or service person mustconnect burner system to gassupply. Follow all local codes.

CAUTION: For propane/LPunits, never connect heater di-rectly to the propane/LP supply. This heater requires an externalregulator (not supplied). Install theexternal regulator between theheater and propane/LP supply.

CHECK GAS TYPEUse proper gas type for the burner systemunit you are installing. If you have conflict-ing gas types, do not install burner system.See dealer where you purchased the burnersystem for proper system according to yourgas type.

NOTICE: This heater is intendedfor use as supplemental heat. Usethis heater along with your pri-mary heating system. Do not in-stall this heater as your primaryheat source. If you have a centralheating system, you may runsystem’s circulating blower whileusing heater. This will help circu-late the heat throughout thehouse. In the event of a poweroutage, you can use this heateras your primary heat source.

Installation Items Needed

Before installing stove and burner system, make sure you have the items listed below.

• external regulator (supplied by installer)

• piping (check local codes)

• sealant (resistant to propane/LP gas)

• equipment shutoff valve *

• test gauge connection *

• sediment trap

• tee joint

• pipe wrench

• approved flexible gas line with gas con-nector (if allowed by local codes) (notprovided)

* A CSA design-certified equipment shutoffvalve with 1/8" NPT tap is an acceptablealternative to test gauge connection. Pur-chase the CSA design-certified equipmentshutoff valve from your dealer.

For propane/LP connections only, the in-staller must supply an external regulator. The external regulator will reduce incominggas pressure. You must reduce incominggas pressure to between 11 and 14 inches ofwater. If you do not reduce incoming gaspressure, heater regulator damage couldoccur. Install external regulator with thevent pointing down as shown in Figure 30.Pointing the vent down protects it fromfreezing rain or sleet.

Sediment Trap/Drip Leg

Natural - From GasMeter (5" W.C. to 10.5"W.C. Pressure )

CAUTION: Use pipe joint seal-ant that is resistant to liquid pe-troleum (LP) gas.

We recommend that you install a sedimenttrap/drip leg in supply line as shown inFigure 31. Locate sediment trap/drip legwhere it is within reach for cleaning. Installin piping system between fuel supply andheater. Locate sediment trap/drip leg wheretrapped matter is not likely to freeze. Asediment trap traps moisture and contami-nants. This keeps them from going intoburner system gas controls. If sediment trap/drip leg is not installed or is installed wrong, burner system may not run properly.

CAUTION: Use only new, black iron or steel pipe. Inter-nally-tinned copper tubing maybe used in certain areas. Checkyour local codes. Use pipe of 1/2"diameter or greater to allowproper gas volume to fireplace. Ifpipe is too small, undue loss ofpressure will occur.

Installation must include an equipmentshutoff valve, union, and plugged 1/8" NPTtap. Locate NPT tap within reach for testgauge hook up. NPT tap must be upstreamfrom burner system (see Figure 31).

Check your building codes for any specialrequirements for locating equipment shutoffvalve to stove.

Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to malethreads. This will prevent excess sealantfrom going into pipe. Excess sealant in pipecould result in clogged fireplace valves.

INSPECTINGBURNERSCheck pilot flame pattern and burner flamepatterns often.

PILOT ASSEMBLYThe pilot assembly is factory preset for theproper flame height. Alterations may haveoccurred during shipping and handling. Calla qualified service person to readjust thepilot if necessary.

The height of the thermopile must be 3/8" to1/2" above the pilot flame as shown inFigure 54. The flame from the pilot burnermust extend beyond the thermopile.

If your pilot assembly does not meet theserequirements:

• turn burner system off (see To Turn OffGas to Appliance, page 19)

• see Troubleshooting, pages 23 through 25

BURNER FLAME PATTERNBurner flames will be steady; not lifting orfloating. Flame patterns will be differentfrom unit to unit and will vary depending oninstallation type and weather conditions.

If the vent configuration is installed incor-rectly, the flames will lift or “ghost”. Thiscan be dangerous. Inspect the flames afterinstallation to ensure proper installationand performance.

Figure 55 shows a typical flame pattern. Ifburner flame pattern differs from that described:

• turn burner system off (see To Turn OffGas to Appliance, page 19)

Haveburner system inspected yearlyby a qualified service person.Stove and burner system mayneed more frequent cleaning dueto excessive lint from carpeting, bedding material, pet hair, etc.

WARNING: Do not use abra-sive cleaners as this may damageglass. Use a nonabrasive house-hold glass cleaner to clean glass.Do not clean glass when hot.

WARNING: Handle glassdoor panel with care. Do notstrike, slam or otherwise abuseglass. Do not operate burnersystem with the glass door re-moved, cracked, or broken.

GLASS DOOR

Glass must be cleaned periodically. Duringstart-up it is normal for condensation toform on the inside of the glass causing lint, dust, and other airborne particles to cling tothe glass surface. During initial start-up aslight film may form on the glass due topaint curing. The glass should be cleanedseveral times with a non-ammonia, non-abrasive household cleaner and warm waterafter the first two weeks of operation. There-after, clean the glass two or three timesduring each heating season, depending onthe usage and circumstances present. Referto Removing/Replacing Glass Door on page17 of this manual when removing glass doorfor cleaning.

PILOT AND BURNERS• Remove ember material before clean-

ing burners and replace when cleaningis complete.

• Burner and controls should be cleanedwith compressed air to remove dust, dirt,or lint.

• Use a vacuum cleaner or small, softbristled brush to remove excess dust, dirt,or lint.

WARNING: Only parts sup-plied by the manufacturer shouldbe used when replacing brokenor damaged glass door panel (seeReplacement Parts, page 26). Thisglass door panel is a completeunit. No substitute materials maybe used.

If glass has been broken, carefully removeglass door (see Removing/Replacing GlassDoor, page 17). Vacuum all glass pieceswith a shop vac.

CAUTION: Wear gloves andsafety glasses while handling orremoving broken glass. Do notremove if glass is hot. Keep chil-dren and pets away from glass.

WARNING: Do not operateburner system with the glass doorremoved, cracked, or broken.

Use only the ceramic glass door replace-ment intended for this burner system (seeReplacement Parts, page 26, for details onordering). No substitutions may be made.See Removing/Replacing Glass Door, page17, for instructions for replacing glass door.

CAUTION: Do not vacuum ifpieces are hot.

LOGS• If you remove logs for cleaning, refer to

Installing Logs, Lava Rock, and GlowingEmbers, page 18, to properly replace logs.

• Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any car-bon buildup on logs.

• Replace log(s) if broken. See Replace-ment Parts on page 26.

• Replace ember material periodically asneeded. See Replacement Parts on page 26.

VENTING SYSTEMConduct annual inspection of the ventingsystem following these guidelines:

1. Check areas of venting system that areexposed to the weather for corrosion (rustspots or streaks and, in extreme cases, holes). Have these items replaced imme-diately by a qualified service person.

2. Remove the vent cap and shine aflashlight into the vent. Remove anyforeign material.

3. Check for evidence of excessive con-densation. Continuous condensationcan cause corrosion of caps, pipes, andfittings and can be caused by havingexcessive lateral runs, too many el-bows, or exterior portions of the sys-tem being exposed to cold weather.

4. Inspect joints to verify that no pipe sec-tion or fitting has been disturbed andloosened. Check mechanical supportssuch as wall straps for rigidity.
