Andrew Stanton

Is a director, screenwriter, and producer at Pixar Animation Studios. He has worked on projects such as Toy Story, A Bug’s Life,

Finding Nemo, Wall-e, and John Carter. He can attribute one thing to being the key to all of his success; he is one of

the greatest storytellers of our generation.

Thesis

What are the elements that make up a good story?

Grabbing the audience’s attention

Grabbing the audience’s attention

Andrew opens his speech with a joke, but being the great storyteller that he is

you do not realize it is a joke until he gets to the punch line.

Grabbing the audience’s attention

Andrew opens his speech with a joke, but being the great storyteller that he is

you do not realize it is a joke until he gets to the punch line.

He tells it as if he was there, and draws the audience in with imagery and an accent.

When he finishes the joke he receives a positive reaction from the crowd, which is the point

he was trying to make. You have to make the audience care.

Through out the speech…He uses clips from some of his works that visually portrays the elements of ‘story’

he is trying to relay to the audience.

The TED CommandmentsAndrew has all of the commandmentspresent in his speech, but the one he

best follows is “Thou shalt tell a story.”

Page 11: Castelli vincent psp_1303_ted_evaluation

He does this best because he

basically formatted his

entire speech as a story.

He describes points in his

life, from current to past,

that made him into the

storyteller he is today.

He does this best because he

basically formatted his

entire speech as a story.

He describes points in his

life, from current to past,

that made him into the

storyteller he is today.

In one particular story, he tells of the first time he saw “Bambi.” He describes

how the movie left him in a state of wonder, and was like nothing he had ever seen before.

Dynamism Rating: 5/5

Page 14: Castelli vincent psp_1303_ted_evaluation

Dynamism Rating: 5/5 I rated Andrew at a “5” because he is knowledgeable and passionate about his topic of story. He does a good job

of grabbing and holding onto the audience’s attention, while using a

good mix of humor and sincerity throughout his speech. Once he reaches

the end I felt not only inspired, but enlightened as to what a story really is and the impact it should have on

a person.

One tip from Garr Reynolds that was clearly present in Andrew’s speech was naturalness in his delivery. I learnedthat if you know your subject matter, you can talk to your

audience instead of lecturing to them. I think this approachis the best way to go because the audience will openup to the speaker, and in turn the speaker will have a

greater impact on his audience.

Although Andrew Stanton’s speech promotes the creativity that Sir Ken Robinson believes is being educated out of

todays youth, he symbolizes the exact opposite case. Stanton is driven by his creativity,

and never let anyone take it away from him.

As for the technical aspects of their speeches, they both use humor as a way to break the barrier between their audience and themselves. They both also used visual references to explain certain points,

which increases the appeal of the overall presentation.

As for the technical aspects of their speeches, they both use humor as a way to break the barrier between their audience and themselves. They both also used visual references to explain certain points,

which increases the appeal of the overall presentation.

The only technical difference I noticed was that Andrew Stanton was referring to a guideline as hediscussed his topic. It did not take anything away

from the presentation, but it is obvious that Sir KenRobinson is a more experienced public speaker.

The tips I acquired from my TED speaker is first and foremost, connect with your audience early in the speech. Whether it isthrough humor, or with a visual, it is important to engage the

audience in order to get their attention.

And once you have their attention, in the words of Andrew Stanton,

“know your punch line.” Know where the speech is going and

how you plan to get there.
