Harmony Week Planning is underway for a different way of celebrating Harmony Week at Castle Hill Public School. Rather than a parade this year, each grade will participate in a ‘Taste of Harmony’ throughout Harmony Week. We are looking for parents or community members to volunteer their time during Harmony Week, sharing a recipe and/or food preparation of a special dish. Planned dates are Tuesday 17 March for K-2 students, Wednesday 18 March for Stage 3 students and Thursday 19 March for Stage 2 students. If you are interested in finding out more or taking part, please register your interest here http://bit.ly/CHPShw2020 Chess Sydney Academy of Chess will again be offering chess tuition each Friday after school in the library, from 3:10pm 4:10pm. This will be for students in Years 3 to 6. Please refer to the flyer at the end of the newsletter, should your child be interested in participating in this program. Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE) Classes for SRE commenced today. Due to increasing enrolments, we need additional community volunteers for Hindu SRE. Training, support and resources are provided. Please email Mrs Kohary [email protected] if you can or you know of anyone who may be able to fulfil this role. Special Education in Ethics (SEE) An expression of interest (EOI) was sent home last week for students in Years 1, 2 and 4 who wish to participate in SEE. Places were allocated based on when EOI notes were returned to the school office, with confirmation letters being sent home this week. It is likely that an additional Stage 1 class will be offered next term. Selective High School Test – Entry for Year 7 2021 The test will be held on Thursday 12 March 2020 at 9.00am at Castle Hill High School, for students who have been nominated by their parents last year, to sit the test. Parents must drop students off at the test centre by 9.00am and return promptly at 1.30pm to pick them up. There is no supervision for students before 8:30am. If the test finishes early, students will be supervised. Please do not be late to collect your child after the test. If the test is delayed, please wait quietly and take care to avoid disruption to the school or students doing the test.

Bebras Challenge Bebras is an international student Computational Thinking Challenge, and Bebras Australia is run by CSIRO Education and Outreach through the Digital Careers program. The goal is to promote Computational Thinking to students in a way that highlights student ability beyond Science or Maths skills. The challenge complements learning that students engage with in our current curriculums, tapping into problem solving skills of pattern recognition, logic and algorithms. The challenge runs twice a year, and is open to students in Years 3-6 at the primary school level. Students can enter as an individual or as a team, where collaborative thinking is encouraged. The first challenge opens for a two-week period in March, and we are seeking expressions of interest from students who would like to participate in this opportunity. The challenge will be completed during the school day, under the supervision of a coordinating teacher. If your child is interested, could you please scan the QR code to access an online form to their details, and indicate whether your child has a preference for working individually or in a team. Expressions of interest will close TODAY Wednesday March 4. Students wishing to practice can access past papers via this link https://digitalcareers.csiro.au/en/Bebras/Bebras-resources/Bebras_365 Below is a sample question – check our next weeks newsletter for the solution. Week 5 Solution: 7014831 Explanation: By adding the values of the beads that are nearest to the centre of the abacus the answer shown can be obtained

Weekly Problem Solving – Week 6

After school the young beavers often play together.

To avoid quarrels about where to play, they throw a normal six sided die.

The decision is found according to this rule:

Question:

Which sequence of throws will send the young beavers to the sports field?

PREMIERS READING CHALLENGE 2020 The NSW Premiers Reading Challenge is a fantastic way to encourage our Castle Hill Public School readers to engage with a variety of quality books. This challenge is open to all our students and it is really easy to join in!

All you have to do is visit the website: NSW Premiers Reading Challenge 2020 and you will find a list of books, key dates, rules and information about how to log on and register. The challenge started this week on Monday March 2 and will end on Friday August 28. Our school library supports and encourages students to participate in this challenge by providing PRC books, support and information for students. Each grade has a PRC tub with a selection of books which they can read in class during ‘reading time’. These are easily

accessible and can be used when completing the reading log. We look forward to seeing everyone getting into reading this year!

Just a reminder that next Wednesday March 11, 2020, 7.00pm the P&C will be having its annual AGM. All P&C executive positions will be declared open so if you feel like you would like to have a role on the P&C and can commit to the extra time required during the year, you are very welcome to nominate. We run a number of events during the year, we are responsible for both the school canteen and the uniform shop and there is some behind the scenes work so P&C executive support is required throughout the year to help make everything run smoothly.

It is a lot of fun too, meetings are relaxed so if you would like to join us, we would love to have you come along even if it is just to attend without holding a role. I look forward to welcoming back our current members and any new faces.

I look forward to meeting many of you this year. Katherine Mullen

P&C President
