The fishing vessel sank. 446 Bear Fishing vessel, MMSI 367632470, Built 1984, 72 gt Date of Casualty 8 October 2021 Type of Casualty Grounding Type of Claim Hull damage and salvage claim In the evening of 8 October 2021, the 68-ft fishing vessel Bear ran aground on a beach off Barnegat Light in Island Beach State Park, New Jersey, USA prompting an emergency response by the Coast Guard and local fire services. The 1984 built scalloper was returning home to Viking Village near Barnegat Light early on Saturday evening loaded with a catch of 11 bags of scallops, when she grounded at 2000 hours on a sandbar at the Island Beach State Park, and became stuck in the surf. The crew of three were reported to be safe and had been able to escape from the grounded vessel onto the beach. The Coast Guard and the Seaside Park and Seaside Heights fire companies were notified of the grounding and at 2200 hours personnel and craft were dispatched to the area to provide assistance. A local team from TowBoatUS was also deployed the following morning. The local fire brigade used a jet ski was used to get a line from the vessel to the attending tugs. Initial attempts to pull the Bear from the beach were unsuccessful and a more powerful tug, Shamrock, was subsequently dispatched from Atlantic City to assist. However efforts to get her line to the Bear were abandoned due to prevailing weather conditions which were causing surf to continually pound the vessel. Local officials closed an area of the park to vehicles and anglers whilst the Bear remained aground due to the weather. In the meantime steps were taken by NorthStar Marine to remove 1,400 gallon of fuel from the fishing vessel. The crew were also reportedly able to remove the catch. A further attempt to pull the vessel free was expected after weather conditions improve. Click here for video.

X Press Pearl Í - editions 426, 427, 428, 429, 430, 433, 434 & 436 - work to remove the wreckage of the containership is scheduled to commence in early November when the Southwest Monsoon is expected to subside. In the meantime the report into the environmental damage caused by the fire and subsequent sinking is expected at the end of November which will include costings for rehabilitation to the areas affected by the pollution.

Framfjord S - editions 324 & 370 - police in Norway have issued a charge against the Master of the vessel following the accident on 6 June 2019 in which the Framfjord allided with the Northhortlands Bridge between Bergen and Flatte, a charge which carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison. Damage to the vessel was in excess of NOK 10 million and damage to the bridge, which was weakened in the allision, was estimated at NOK 9 million.

Bulk Shenzhen & RB Lisa - edition 436 - the RB Lisa has returned to operational service after completing repairs to the damage caused in the collision with the Bulk Shenzhen on the Yangtze river on 2 August 2021. She departed the port of Zhoushan en route to Port Hedland on 8 October 2021.

Vera Su - editions - 443, 444 & 445 - the vessel’s engine compartment is now completely flooded and she been declared as sunken property by the local authorities although she is in a stable condition. According to reports the vessel will not be able to be refloated. Discussions regarding the removal of the cargo and the wreck are continuing. In the meantime Bulgarian prosecutors have placed the vessel’s Master and Chief Officer under arrest. They have been charged with endangering lives and the environment.
